Ears Up and Down
 

After being up for over a week, Wookie's ears fell down :(. They did start to grow a slight amount of hair on them. But I'm wondering if that is why the fell down or if he is teething. I shaved them again and taped them for a night and they are wavering up. One periodically flops down. Should I start taping them daily again? The bottoms stand up fine, it's just the very tips that flop over.

That's all that I've seen flop over. How old is the yorkie? What are you using to tape? Do you have a photo? Have you taped other ears? How big are the ears? How long are you taping? Are you petting the yorkie one the ears any? When you make a nose such as a squeaker, do they come up?

First of all when taping them, you need to leave them up for 5 days, taking them down for 2 days, if needed repeat..

Many reasons as to why their ears go up and down. Especially in males.....teething, growing, testicles not being seated yet.......so, whenever they begin to flop or waver.....tape.

Well I change the tape everyday because his ears get dirty quickly and I need to clean them daily. But per advice, I will tape them for another week. Thats when I massage them.

He is almost 14 weeks and I taped his ears before which is how I got them to stand in the first place. I use the Johnson and Johnson breathable tape and athletic tape. He has reaaally big ears in comparison to his body. When they were standing they would move in correspondence with his emotions. So cute :) Here is the basic way I am taping them.

Make sure that his ears are clean of any ear canal hair.....shave them down, use an alcohol swab to insure there is not greasy residue on the ear leathers......make sure you don't block the ear canals.....as long as you detect no odor in his ears.....it's very safe to leave it up for 5 days. As a matter fact you are doing more harm to the ear leathers, by taking them down daily.

I pluck his ear hair. And his ears do have a slight odor. My vet said he doesn't have the yeast infection, but its wavering which is why I am careful. I will try leaving them up for longer, if they start to turn for the worse I'll get the drops. That's another reason I want his ears to stand. The stretch that they were standing his ears were gunk and odor free :( Poor guy and his massive Yoda ears lol

He'll grow into his Yoda ears. They look big now, because of the lack of ear furnishings. Did your vet check for ear mites? I know of a breeder that was having difficulty with ear odor....vet was treating for ear infections.....found out she had a case of mites.........may not be with your pup, but there's no harm in having them checked.

She mentioned that if it was still like that when we take him for his next round that she's gonna test him for it. It's better than it was before because of his ears standing. I may just have her do it anyways, especially because I keep them squeaky clean as possible. Thanks for your help Mardelin.

B/c having them up now is crucial it's okay to shave the whole ear, not just the tip IMO. I asked if you're touching the ear b/c folks will pet behind the ears affectionately. Do not allow any contact w/ ears whatsoever. They are too fragile. Keep this in mind about tape on/ tape off. Resist the urge to peek at the ears. Tape them & leave.

I'm assuming you got him at 12 weeks, had him a wk them ears went down? Did you ask the breeder if they were up before that? I think it's a good idea to take him in to the vet maybe w/ the tape on too. Why not, take advantage of the appt. :D? Let the vet show you how to tape it for the best results. Not to worry, if they were up for a week you'll be okay. He's a doll. Congratulations.

Yes, good point. Yoda ears :D:D:D I was actually thinking of some yorkies I've seen w/ ears that were so big they looked like lpsa's ears. But in all actuality, yoda ears are common. I'll never think of big ears the same now. Thank you for giving me a positive spin on Star Wars.

If you are having problems with the ears staying up, I would suggest using glue.
There are many wonderful glue products out there that are safe and also they have the glue removal which is wonderful.
When you use glue, the pup doesn't have some clunky piece of tape up there on his ears that he is just dying to get off, that can actually do more damage to the ear (they can burst the blood vessels in the ear etc., just trying to get that off the ear. However, with glue they don't even realize that it is on the ear.
And if you have a couple of pups, the ears can really take some serious injuries from the other pups trying to get the tape off. So, you may want to research using glue.

Share the types of glue. I use surgical glue. Build a brace form out of the back of a check book cover. Making sure the form matches the outline of the ear. Add a breath rite strip for a brace. Add surgical glue and glue the form into the inside of the ear. Although I have used breathable medical tape with great sucess too.

I have used the Surgical glue too. I have been up for 4 or 5 nights around the clock tubing a pup, I lost him this morning, I am worn out. I can't remember the name of the surgical glue I use. I will look it up.
I need to get some sleep, but I am so tired I can't seem to settle down for a nap. :(

The strip eyelash adhesive is excellent to use as well. It's clear, waterproof, very safe, and will peel off when no longer needed. Dr. Schols makes a patch to put on your feet that can be cut to fit into the ears and will glue right in. It's safe and the other pups won't bother it. It's so comfortable the pup will hardly know it's there.

I have never used it, but if I ever have to glue again, I am going to try that.

Tear Mender....my mentor has used this too. Where can you purchase it.

How do you apply? Painting it on.

Use one for hair spray too.

So, a bit of instruction......pull the ear up and postion it correctly and paint, correct?

I have a girl here that has been having a tremendous time with teething, she's 4 months old and already losing her milk teeth. Because of her teething I'm having a heck of a time with her ears.

Oops! Please forgive me....I'm sorry on the loss of your puppy, it's always so heart wrenching, working so hard and losing the battle. I'd never lost one until recently....I thought my chest was going to cave in with the pressure of the hurt.

I have one friend who used the super glue on one of her dogs ears, after the vet told her it was the same thing that they use at the ER to glue the skin on humans. Of course it was before they had the gel kind and she got her fingers glued together because she was protecting the ear canal and the glue dripped onto her fingers LOL I will never forget that story. But it did keep her dogs ear up, it did take her a while to get the glue off the ear, I remember the dogs hair started growing and she used her peanut clipper to just trim the hair with the dried glue off. The ears were up and beautiful. And the dog had no allergic reaction to the glue etc.
Loosing pups never get easier. I just hated to see him go.

Yes, it's often called mole skin. It's soft enough that it won't cut into the skin and the bit of adhesive on it will help keep it in place while the eyelash adhesive dries. Just make sure you get the clear adhesive for the strip eyelashes because the one for individual eyelashes smells very strong and is harder to work with.

Thanks guys, I learned something. I've never had trouble with ears like I have this little girl. I just happened to be brushing her teeth this afternoon and looked in her mouth....shocked, because it looked like she was undershot....looked again and put my thumb to them and they wiggled. Thought to myself.....there's the culprit....your milk teeth took so long to come in and now your adults are starting to emerge........

So, I guess I'll order this stuff and start the glue......

Thank you for all the info on gluing ears. I'm going to ask my vet about it tomorrow after she checks his ears out. I'm a little hesitant to glue for obvious reasons, but I think I will try the moleskin. We'll see how it goes!
