He looks ready for work. Too Cute. At what age should one use wraps?

There are some others on this forum that can answer better than I can. I started practicing on him last month. He is 7 1/2 months old. I do a few at a time to get him use to the process. At the same time I put treats in a little bowl to keep him happy. This was the first time I wrapped his whole body. I still have trouble getting him wrapped around his face....that...is a challenge.

KaylaB 09-21-2009 02:33 PM

Where did you get the wrapjacket? And what bands/size do you use with the paper?

Sookie 09-21-2009 02:36 PM

He's a cutie...he looks like he's smiling. Good luck in your endeavors. :D

There is a YT member that makes them. It's at wrappingjackets.com. Her name is Kristena Bravo. It was very well made and they shipped very fast, even with monogram.

Oh he wasn't smiling...LOL it was more like a growl or maybe a smirk...he was not happy with wearing Hugh Hefner pajamas.

Bravo916 09-21-2009 03:20 PM

:D Oh Pam he is such a doll! It looks great and I am so glad it fits him so perfectly with a little room to grow!

Love love love the colors you chose!

Carl if you are reading this yours is coming soon--we had to do a little perfecting on the S/M size and she's making the orders now. :)

It really depends on the dog and the length of the coat. I cant say exactly but I believe most people start wrapping between 9-12 months, some earlier and some dont wrap. I started my 12m/o boy at 7 months.

I would keep them in oil and when you need to start wrapping just the back/front legs where the hair usually touches the ground first and then after they adjust, wrap the entire body.

My pup LOVES to backstroke on the carpet (and do the down and back on textured walls) so I HAVE to keep a jacket on him 24/7.

Pam, for the face it might be helpful if you start by loosely banding the mustache to get him used to something being on his face and then after about a month switch to paper wraps.

Thanks, I'll try that. I have put his mustache in bands but it didn't last 3 minutes and the little stinker had them out. I'll keep trying...maybe he will get use to it....

ME TOO....Soon i hope to have two of them in the ring. I let you know how it goes in Canada.

Stryker's coat does look like Hugh Hefner's pjs! Adorable! So, how long do you leave them in wraps? Do they stay that way all the time when not showing? I have always been curious about this. Although Ben has floor-length hair, I have never wrapped him. I know the ends would stay nicer if I did, but it is hard enough to keep a topknot in this rowdy boy! :)

Hello,
Well I am sooo not the one to give advice on coat care, I am learning as I go. I have a good mentor and hope to learn more in the coming months. I believe most show yorkies are kept in oil while they are young and then as the coat get longer it stays wrapped. Stryker's coat is a little more than half way to the floor and if he shakes after wrapping (and he always shakes after wrapping) they fly off everywhere. LOL However the longer parts of the coats stay wrapped longer, so I assume that as the coat length increases the easier it will be to keep them on. Right now we are practice wrapping...getting him use to getting worked on and I'm learning to wrap faster. I do this as often as I can usually after bath time. So we are both learning. Hopefully some other REAL show veterans will jump on this thread and help you out. This jacket is soooo very cute. It has his name on the back of the collar...just love it. Kristena Bravo, I got it from her. She posted on this thread if you want a jacket. Good luck!;)

Oh my NY, I'm sorry but I am going to defer this one to the veterans. I am....a rookie and do not want to tell you anything that is incorrect. I use a light oil on my boys coat right now. It protects his coat and keeps it from tangling. I was a hairdresser right out of high school for about 5 years so thats where I learned to wrap. It sort of like wrapping a perm except no roller just paper and rubber bands.
There are some great show exhibitors on this forum so I know they can explain better than I could. I'm just practicing now.
Wish I could help more but I am learning myself. Good Luck!

There is so much work that goes into growing a yorkie show coat. There are many different products to use also and many different methods. Here is a good website to start with that has lots of good information about coat care:
Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers

Show yorkies are wrapped so the coat will not get broken and damaged.

You can find lots of other great information on YT and the internet on wrapping and yorkie coat care.

hi Pam,

your Stryker is precious,I am a rookie too and have started to wrap my boy.he is now 10 months.i also ordered a wrapping jacket from Kristena.can't wait toget it.
My problem is not only does my boy try to take out his wraps, but so does his sister..too funny but rather frustrating.I have to get back to wrapping again, the jacket will help keep him from trying to pull them out.

wraps and oil

We all have our own favorite things we do to care for a show coat. I use emu oil on mine. For boys, the most important thing is to keep pee out of the coat. If they are not 100% reliable, I make sure to use a belly band. I wrap or band the hair under the belly band and redo those daily. Next I usually wrap the hair on the hips so that you don't get any poop hanger ons. I don't usually wrap the front unless we are going to be somewhere with carpet or grass or so on. Grass is very hard on the ends of the coat. When they are in full wraps I use a jacket but this isn't usually necessary until they are about a year old. Hope this helps a bit

nyteacups 09-24-2009 10:04 AM

does this wrapping help the coat to grow a bit or just to keep it in show condition ....would do anything to help my fur babies grow more fur...any ideas...

Yes I work with him every day and now I'm wrapping him just to get him accustom to it. Here are a few pics with right after his bath. He does have some oil on his coat so it looks a little darker. He also looks fat in one photo but it's all hair. I am trying to put some weight on him, he's skinny.

Bravo916 09-24-2009 02:33 PM

Oh Pam he is a doll!

He doesnt look fat! I know what you mean though--with all of that coat they can sometimes look like tanks! I have to admit, having a dog with A LOT of coat is a very nice thing! ;) Count your blessings!
