dog show aka Days of our lifes to start with yes this may be a rant but omg If I stand behind one more person and here them bad mouth my dog .. to tell you the truth No wonder there are not alot of new handlers in this breed. I have just started showing dogs and I have watched Profesional handler knock yorkies off groom tables and thank god it was strung up by its lead And not smashed into the concret floor. I keep thinking whats sportsmanship .. it dosnt start and end with a congradulations to the winner or a Thank you from the winner .. I have spent the past two days begging my other half into not scratching my scooter from our next few shows .. and not due to winning or loosing but due to crud I think IM gonna bring earphones to add to my groom bag .. you know the thought process you can talk about me but dont you talk about my mom .. same gos for my fur kids.I honestly took away from winning breed monday I showed horses for 15 years and never anything like this ..well a few fist fights but that was always over some man .. end of rant .. |
posting on my own post LOL OK I am over it dark glooming feeling is gone I will find the positive peps and enjoy the shows |

Sorry you had such a bad experience, but give it time and things will get better. Like anything or anywhere - there is good and bad. I have met only a few people that I did not like, but have met a lot of very nice and supportive poeple. Many of my best friends are show people. They are very kind and thoughtful and glad I show, so was able to meet them. I have also met some very nice handlers and they are very kind to the dogs they show. If you watched them and did not know they were a handler, you would think the dog/s were their own. I have seen them talk sweetly to them, give them a lot of attention, play with them, and spoil them. So just give it time and you will see. T. |
The comments about one of my dogs just challenged me. She is now a champion. I ran into one of the judges that didn't like my dark girl. never put her up and talked "like a dog" about her to another exhibitor that happened to be my friend. This was last year right after that dog got her championship so of course I made enough friendly talk with him just to rub my championship in his face LOl but he made a remark to me that yorkie exhibtors are the creulest, backbitingist people in the show world and commended me for keeping on with her. he used to show yorkies himself. |
I've seen and heard so many snotty comments about my baby I' can't imagine showing them. I know i'd be arrested for punching someone out who made a nasty comment about mine. :) |
Showing is not for the faint hearted and you must have thick skin or develop scales. However, if you remember what we show for; To Gain Approval Of Our Breeding Stock, this will keep you focused on your goal and your mind off the politics that go hand in hand with most everything we do. I've had the wonderful experience of showing yorkies in the Central and Southern US, and showing there is a pleasure. Yes, there is a competitive spirit, but when the showing is done we all travel, room, and socialize together. All yorkie exhibitors set up together and help one another. |
Showing dogs isn't for the faint hearted that's for sure! You have to have thick skin, learn to shake it off and at the end of the day we all go out and have dinner and have a good time! Maltese exhibitors I hear are worse than yorkie exhibitors LOL... I'm getting started in handling so I won't ever have to send my dogs off to a handler so I can take care of my own dogs and hopefully give someone else that entrusts me with their dogs that a handler truely cares for the dogs in their keep :) Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

Puppies and the restless I painted a bad picture of dog shows .. I only pointed out the neg .. there are some great aspects .. and alot of kind ppl who have gone out of there way to be nice to me and give me pointer and I have made some friends .. as I said it was a.. Ugly moments and that person knocking the yorkie off the table just put me in a bad mind set I love to show and its alot of fun also ..and I tend to be more positive that was just a weak moment  |

I've had people say I'm not a nice person but then again I have many say I'm one of the nicest LOL...I take the good with the bad. To be honest I'm not in it to make friends although I've made a few very very good friends within the yorkie circles but I've learned over the years just be yourself and if they don't like you who cares, your in it for the love of the breed and the best representation of the breed as you can and to heck what others think :) Donna |

But, I like you know there are those that don't particularly care for me, but then I've given them a reason not too. |

If someone doesn't like me, like you, I gave them a reason :) Donna |
I love showing too but it can get a little stressful because of the tension between the different yorkie exhibitors. I like everybody and try to talk to everyone but I do know that not everyone likes each other for one reason or the other. When I first started showing yorkies I was shocked a few times when breeders would walk up at a show and just start faulting my dog without me even asking. In the beginning it hurt but when I think about it I know they were just being honest and trying to educate me about yorkies. Of course the first puppy I showed was a beautiful little soft coated bitch so I soon learned that a proper silk coat is needed in the show ring if you ever want to win. She got retired really quick. Everyone at the shows has been really nice to me and very helpful and I have learned a lot in the last 3 years. I just wish I could go to more shows. To the OP, I know that people like to 'talk' about the competition, it is just human nature. I have learned that there is no perfect yorkie, they all have faults. Once you start watching the dogs you will start seeing the faults in the other dogs too and perhaps you might want to talk to a friend about what you have noticed or what your evaluation of a particular dog is. People are not doing it to be mean but they are just stating their opinion. The show judge for that day is the only one who's opinion really matters. Just go to the show and have a good time.:) Donna, I must say you have always been nice to me and very helpful. :) |

I learned from a good friend of mine when you ask for my opinion you better get ready for it because I will be brutally honest LOL...it's a fault of mine to be blunt but oh well at least ya know where ya stand with me LOL... Again, it's been said many times you really have to have thick skin in any competition whether it be dogs, horses or any other sport actually! If you love it enough you deal with it :) Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

One thing I have learned though is there is a wide varying of opinions and preferences on things such as coat, head type, body type, leg, etc. so sometimes the type of yorkie one person likes, someone else will not like. Sometimes it is good to get more than one opinion. But then I guess that is why we show because the judges have a varying of opinions too.:) |

You are right, judges have their varying opinions too, and as I always just another day at the dog show LOL Donna |

I’m sorry! I’m new here, and a bit lost! Please let me understand! So please allow me couple of questions, so I’ll understand ( Sorry I’m a bit slow) I believe it's your postings: *http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/off...g-groomer.html so you are a groomer !? Right? *Now! Congratulations here http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...acramento.html I see no complains here! Right? *Here…I’m so sorry U’ve entered incorrectly http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-dog-show.html But it wasn't "yorkie PPl" fault, Right? *Here …I’m sorry about the judge http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-too-dark.html Again not a "yprkie's ppl" fault! Right? *And of cause this one http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...rced-show.html I thank them myself every time I go to the show!!! :clapsmile:clapsmile:clapsmile I don’t believe we’ve ever meet, but from my experience in Northern California “yorkie people” are very friendly and even without wearing earphones I’ve NEVER heard on a dog show anyone trashing someone’s dog in front of the owner! More than that! I went to quiet a few meetings in local club and so far I strongly believe, that members of the club are following Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Code of Ethics Don’t get me wrong! May be I’m naïve, but I strongly believe, Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Code of Ethics in the US is much more respected, than in any other country I’ve ever been so far. :animal-pa |
Yelena, in defense of the OP, she may not have been talking about members of the YTCA or the local club. A person can have many wonderful experiences at the dogs shows but it can take just one bad experience to really get you down. Since you have not been showing long you may not have encountered any of this but there is a lot that goes on outside the show ring that you might not be aware of. The OP did come back and talk about the good things about showing. I have had a few bad days myself where I got really down after a show. It was not because of loosing or anything like that but just from me being overly sensitive about things that I should not let bother me. I know sometimes new exhibitors and spectators take things the wrong way and feel they are getting ignored but the truth is that it takes a lot of work and stress preparing your dog for the show and often afterwards some people just get in a hurry to leave or in the case of handlers, they may have other dogs to get ready to show. |
