Is he show quality at all??? 2 Attachment(s) Hello Yorkie friends! This is my little boy Prosper. I bought him from a show breeder and I would really like to get into showing. He will be my first show dog (if he can be shown) and I need some info :) 1) If he is show quality at all. His parent's had the correct steel blue coloring and I am thinking he will too. He is 19 weeks old now and his blue is coming in. He is about 3lb. now so I am thinking he will be around 4.5-5lb. full grown. Does anyone have any tips or anything on how to get his coat shinier? We might have his first match show next month and I want him to look amazing. Please don't be nice about this...just say if he is anything any of you would consider showing. Thanks for your time! P.S- He wasn't cooperating well in the pics and I couldn't get him to stack right... |

well...thanks for you honest reply. I want to get into showing sooo bad...i just need to find the right dog i guess :) |
Hard to tell at this age but he has a nice top line. I agree you need to keep the tips of his ears trimmed. He's going to be up on leg it looks like but I don't mind that. What is his pedigree? Who's his parents, grandparents? Did his breeders sell him as a show prospect? Is the breeder a co-owner? What kind of contract? All depends on yours and the breeders intention with him. Was the parents health tested? Free of genetic defects? Did the breeder sell with full registration intented for show? Lots of things to consider when getting a show dog.... You did ask LOL Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
Hi, Like I said...I just got into the showing/bloodlines thing. I am not sure. His pedigree is coming back from AKC soon and then I can list grandsires and bitches then. His breeder said he could probably be shown, but obviously not absolutely amazing amazing quality or she would have kept him herself. I am full owner...i didn't want any co-owners. yes his parent's were tested and were show dogs. He does have full reg. for show/breeding. Thanks for any tips... |

And of course the first thing I noticed were his ears. Please get the ear hair trimmed. Do you know how much to trim?? Do Not do the whole ear. Read up on how to do it correctly. I am surprised that the show breeder you got him from sold him with hair on his ears. Do they have any champions themselves?? Don't worry though. You have to start somewhere. And he may be alright. With yorkies - you have to wait so long to see. You should have seen the girl I started with in the 80's. I loved her sooo much. But it was great practice and it allowed to be get to know real show breeders and learn from them. I kept improving with every dog I got. His coat looks like it will be silky. But get those ears trimmed! They will look smaller if you do. Just be sure to do it the correct way. Also I noticed he has a collar on. I do not have my dogs wear collars. It can rub hair off their and for showing - you need the hair there. Plus neck collars are not that safe. T. |
lol...i thought his ears were adorable...shows how much i know :) well...i really don't want to trim them myself because i am extrememly prone to to trimming mistakes (ask my morkie!)...would an all-breed akc groomer know how to trim the ears properly? I want to improve his chances any way I can :) |

he's a cutie! i do not show so i can't be of much help but i do notice he has a nice topline. he is leggy and in the picture his muzzle looks long to me, but what do i know LOL i agree tho that the ears definitely need to be trimmed and you need to take the collar off because it can ruin the coat. Be careful who you let groom your show prospect. I think most people here that show do their own grooming or have other breeder/mentors help them out. Personally I would learn to do it myself unless i knew of a groomer who also shows yorkies and knows what they are doing. you don't want a groomer using the wrong brushes on the coat or whathaveyou, because this can break the coat. i only know what i read here, and these ladies (topknot, sugar's mom, brooklynn) who have already given you advice are great so listen to them |
where are you from .. I am just a novice but I went to some dog shows and braved talking to ppl .. and just for me showing even the unperfect show dog hellped me soo much as a handler look up where you closest dog show is this weekend |
i am in oregon...i haven't found many dog shows... maybe one next month...but i am not sure. what can i do to help his coat grow faster/better? |
Are you going to handling classes? If not... then I would wait to put him in the ring for both of you to be more experienced. I've been to shows and there can be a lot of tough competition. You wanna strut your stuff. I would do a lot of research here on YT to find out how to groom for show, what shampoo and brushes to use...... I would go to a show or two and try to find a mentor. Can your breeder help you with all of this? |
Sorry I can't help with this. None of the yorkies that I have had have been show quality. I just wanted to say your little one is so cute. Please listen and learn from the very knowledgeable people here on yorkie talk and good luck to you.:) |

Hi! I want to show AKC Yorkies sooo bad. I guess I am just looking for the right one now :) Wow!!! I just realized you own formosa yorkies! I visit your website allll the time. You have the most beautiful yorkies and yorkie dresses :) Do you think I should try to show Prosper or probably not? |
MY suggestion to you is take him to the handling class and go to the AKC all breed shows and have the show breeder evaluate your Prosper after they finish showing. to Champion a dog in AKC is much harder. Wish you best ! Quote:

it is hard to judge a yorkie by just looking at the pics. By Looking the pics you posted, He looks like he has very level top and very square body. he definitely has silky coat. He might have a coat that takes longer to grow into full coat. Where do you get him from? do you get him from a show breeder who has finsnished a dog in AKC ? does he have high tailset and elegant gait? His snuzzle seems to be longer.... |
I forgot to thank you for your compliments on my yorkies. Quote:

I think good tailset is important. You want the tail up in the ring Quote:

3 Attachment(s) Higher tailset is better than lower tailset. Here are pics of my Wawa, was ownned by me before, she is in her forever pet home now. You can see her high tailset.:D Quote:

I have a puppy I may show but he is still very young at this point to see if he is show quality. He "may" have a low tailset but it is "always" up. I saw a few in the last show that had high tailsets but their tails were down about 50% of the time in the ring and they still pointed. |
You are very welcome :) thank you for your compliment for my Wawa. I think she is a very pretty girl, too:D Wish you best showing your little and hope he turns out to be a pretty boy for you:D Quote:

UKC says practically the same thing. They , too, follow the club standard . COPIED AND PASTED: The tail is customarily docked to a medium length. The tail set is level with the topline, with the tail carried slightly higher than the level of the back. If undocked, the tail is as straight as possible, well covered with hair, and carried a little above the level of the topline. On an undocked tail the hair will be a darker blue than on the rest of the body, especially at the tip. |
wow...i never thought much about his tail. he holds it level with his back...and it doesn't have much fur on it...is this normal at this age? i will try to get better pics of him and see what you think. he does have a very straight back, but his legs are quite long and his muzzle is kind of mediumish i guess... thank-you sooo much for all the tips!!!! |
More pics of Prosper!!! 4 Attachment(s) Here are some new pics of Prosper. He doesn't generally hold his tail up... |
