i have a question

i have been in a light hearted debate

at what point do you consider yourself a show breeder?
or have the right to call your self a show breeder
what criteria do you think you must have met to give yourself this title?

That is a very good question and I have thought about that myself. I love to show, although lately I have not been in a position to and I love breeding yorkies but I would not consider myself a true show breeder until I have produced something worthy of showing and winning. My goal is to produce show quality puppies but I know that takes time.

I consider someone a show breeder that has champion dogs and has produced champions dogs. But then if someone buys a show quality dog, has a handler finish it and buys a show quality female to breed to their champion would they be considered a show breeder even if they have not produced anything themselves yet? It will be interesting to know what others think.

I think a show breeder is any breeder who shows her dogs, being a show breeder in itself does not impress me in the least because people show for different reasons. If it's part of an overall program designed to produce healthy dogs, that meet standard, then I'm impressed. I really think it's important that show breeders have the highest ethical standards and when they are also members of the mother club, or at least follow their guidelines carefully, and strive for excellence they win my respect, admiration, and gratitude. Some breeders seem to believe that it's more important if you have produced your show pup from scratch, but I see no problem with obtaining the best breeding stock possible, and producing wonderfully healthy beautiful dogs. Hiring a handler seems irrelevant to the process, some people are better suited to this part, and enjoy the actual showing, and others would hate this part, but could still be wonderful breeders.

This is an excellent thread!

I agree with BJH, that a show breeder is someone who has bred a dog that has attained an AKC championship.

I am curious, I have heard someone who breeds dogs that compete (and are titled) in obedience (never has earned any conformation titles) call themselves a "show breeder"--any thoughts on this one?

This is something that has been on my mine lately... I was at a show and there was a person there who has bred and showed their own dogs for about 15 years. This person has finished several dogs and continues to show on a regular basis. Yet, someone called this person a back-yard-breeder.

So when would this person have done enough to be called a show breeder?

Under the discussion above, this person would already be a show breeder. I'd be interested to hear what others think about this.

I think everyone has their ideas as to what makes a show breeder, you will always have a wide variety of opinions. The person you are describing to me sounds like a show breeder but they may not be of the caliber of a breeder that Nancy1999 described in her post. There are good and bad breeders, even in the show world. But I must also say that there is a lot of malicious gossip and out right lies that goes on among breeders and not just show breeders.

i do not considr myself a show breeder i am an Exibitor and breeder even though i breed for show i do not think i have earned that title yet

I consider myself as a small hobby/exhibitor. It has been very depressing lately due to this bad economy and lack of funds. I havent shown in about a year and havent had a litter in over 1 1/2 years.:(

I agree with almost everything you say except your first line. i feel a person must have bred and championed one or two akc dogs at least. I am not a show breeder by any stretch of the imagination. I breed and i show. I even have my own home bred UKC champion but a show breeder I am not and doubt that I will ever be.

When I am showing the offspring of champions of my own breeding I might start referring to myself as a "show breeder." It's a hard earned designation.

You asked this question on another list and I hope I answered you correctly . I want to add one more thing, and it's just my opinion. If I had to I would probably define myself as a breeder/exhibitor. But, I don't understand the necessity of anyone defining theirselves as a show/breeder. As stated before most exhibitor/breeders breed for themselves and not to use any term to sell puppies. If breeding correctly their reputation will preceed itself as being one that breeds to improve the breed.

I agree, I should have added the part of winning the shows, :D. I actually like the term exhibitor, and to me, it sounds better, especially, if you are describing yourself, (not meaning you specifically.)

Yep, saw this on another fourm and I feel strongly as you do. Why the need to give the title to ones self as a Show Breeder. I do not know anyone that calls themself a show breeder. All the show/exhibitors I know, breed for themself. Reputation is everything here. So no need to give titles. I would question the one trying to give themself this title. Reputable people will always tell you that they are learning all the time. And with our breed - you will be learning new things all the time.

I also want to add - that I do not think this is right either when someone is selling a "show prospect/show quality" dog without themself having their own champion. Whether it was one they bought and finished or one that was from their own breeding and finished. I see this all the time though. One can go to all the shows in the world with their dog/s, but if they are not winning what do they have. Are they blind sided. If so how will they judge their own pups.

Unfortunatley, people will always have hateful things to say about one another and the show enviornment doesnt always bring out the best in people.

Like BJH said, maybe this person did not meet the criteria as a responsible breeder --who knows. Just try not to feed into the gossip and give people the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise.

Excellent post. Reputation is everything. I am speculating the reason why people would want to classify themselves with a title they interpret as positive, such as a "show breeder" is because there are so many negative terms out there: byb, mill, and even the term "hobby" has been made to sound negative. I think this classification is a way for them to help differentiate themselves to the layman.

With anything, you get the good with the bad. There will always be those people who sell on unscrupulous sites claiming they are "show breeders." For whatever reason anything involving show dogs or champions tends to strike a magical cord and definitley sells puppies--for some people its unfortunately just an avenue for them to exploit in the name of the "bottom line"

you did and thank you i just am very strong in my opinion that we must earn the right to even think we are much less say we are and i prefer exhibitor/hobby breeder at this point as i am still working on my first champion and working on my own bred by and i know i still have a long way to go i will get there one day but i know it takes time and patience and learning and more learning
