Yorkie Standard - Proper Color Of Gold/Tan
 
I know there has been several discussions of what is the proper color of steel blue and I think I know what to look for there. I would love to get some input on what is the proper color of gold we should be striving for. The following is taken from the Yorkshire Terrier AKC Standard:

Colors
Puppies are born black and tan and are normally darker in body color, showing an intermingling of black hair in the tan until they are matured. Color of hair on body and richness of tan on head and legs are of prime importance in adult dogs, to which the following color requirements apply: BLUE: Is a dark steel blue, not a silver blue and not mingled with fawn, bronzy or black hairs. TAN: All tan hair is darker at the roots than in the middle, shading to still lighter tan at the tips. There should be no sooty or black hair intermingled with any of the tan.

Headfall
A rich golden tan, deeper in color at sides of head, at ear roots and on the muzzle, with ears a deep rich tan. Tan color should not extend down on back of neck.

Chest and Legs
A bright, rich tan, not extending above the elbow on the forelegs nor above the stifle on the hind legs.
I was hoping if some of you could post pictures of adult dogs that you feel have the proper color of gold/tan. I notice a lot of variation in some lines. Some seem to be more of what I call a rich tan and others are a rich gold. I am not sure if one is more proper than the other. I have been told by some show breeders that the proper gold would be like a wedding ring gold. I know the shaded gold (dark at the roots) is desirable but it seems that not all show Yorkies have the shaded gold. Maybe this is another one of those things where it is just up to the interpretation of the beholder. I would love input from all of you.

I love Connor's gold, it is rich and bright at the same time. It is shaded and the same tone on his paws as well as his feet and legs.
Denali's gold is more like a tan in my opinion. It's darker, not as bright and not as shaded. It makes a beautiful contrast to her very deep blue though.
Carly is the light one. Her gold around the muzzle is nice but doesn't extend to the rest of her face which is more of a platnium blond.

Tami, thank you for posting those pictures. I have to agree with you in your evaluation. I love Connors gold too. To me that is more like what I have been told, the wedding ring gold. I am still learning and I know in breeding it is not always easy to achieve the perfect color. To me both types are beautiful. At what age did Connor complete clear?

Connor cleared early, at about a year old. I was afraid that he was going to be light. His sire is out of a Crystal Water's bitch and they run on the lighter side. Here's a pic of him at 11 months. You can see that he is almost clear at that point.

Isn't growing coat the biggest pain in the butt!!? I think you should put him in. He'll get practice and exposure and you may be surprised at how well he does, he's such a pretty boy.

The pup just had to get the judges side.

I think once the coat is flat ironed, it should be easy to conceal.

I have a 6 month old male, Ceasar who seems to have the gold in his muzzle and around his ears, but his head is a light tan....Will that fill in with the gold later? I have a female, Princess who is a perfect color (blue and gold), as she is 18 months old, but I got her full grown and didn't see the progression from puppy to young adult.

I promised pics of my two. Ceasar is only 6 months old, but Princess is 18 months. The pic of her shows her gold. She has a puppy cut right now and I just bathed her before I took the pic.

Anyway, I think I answered my own question. It takes time, LOL

Thanks for sharing the pictures. Most likely Ceasar's head will turn gold when he is about a year old. They look like sweet babies.

My question is the opposite, what really qualifies as a dark steely blue? In the silvery blues I see it, but I don't consider that a dark steely blue. My current opinion is that Buddy is going to be blue/tan. His head is starting to turn tan like the rest of his face, and depending on the lighting his back looks more blue than black and is starting to have the more silvery blue strands. Also on his head the coloring on the tips that are growing out are what I consider blue. Thoughts?

Thanks for the input...I was looking through all of the photos yesterday and did discover some other kids around his age that had the same coloring on the head. I think my non-AKC female is going to have the typical yorkie look. Too bad I can't show her, she sure has the attitude!

Crystal's gold is still pretty nice but as you can see the blue is faded and yet when she got her championship her steel blue was perfect (she had a litter of pups) awhile before I purchased her and that seemed to be a part of making the change in color. I will look and post a pic of her Dad, he had what I consider the perfect shade of gold. btw at almost 14 Crystals gold is much nicer than this pic shows:plol

This pic is not his color, the pic picked up alot of red for some reason but it was the true wedding ring gold. he sired over 90 champions and died at age 14.

Crystal and her dad are absolutely gorgeous. What was her dads name? I really love the gold on both of them. It is quite normal for females to lighten up after having pups. You can really see the silk in Crystal's coat.

Just from the pictures I would say your adorable little boy has a cottony coat. The texture does not look like that of silk that would reflect light and feel cool to touch. Often dogs with cottony coats are dark as young dogs but at around 1 or 2 years they turn a blueish or dark gray color but it is what is referred to as a clerical gray. They do not follow the normal breaking pattens of a dog with a true silk coat. You are correct in your observation that some yorkies have the proper silky coat but they are more of a silvery blue which is also incorrect for show. Some yorkies also have coats that are refered to as woolly coat and some have modified silk (which I still don't understand).

believe it or not there were three in her litter and they are all still alive. She is one of only a couple Gator kids alive today. Her brother and sister had alot to do with starting the famous NicNak line.
