coat oil I'm not exactly sure what I want to ask here, mainly just get more information about using oil on their coats I guess. It is used instead of wrapping or in addition to? Is there a certain kind I should get? When do you use it? Anything else that might be helpful. Thanks in advance! |
3 Attachment(s) For my show boy I bathe him using #1 All Systems Super-Cleaning and Conditioning Shampoo. In a quart bottle I add 2 tablespoons of #1 All Systems Pure Lanolin Plus With Hair Emollients, plus 2 tablespoons of #1 All Systems Super-rich Conditioner; fill bottle with warm water, shake well and pour over your dogs coat, slowly working it in, then rinse dog with warm water and blow him dry. The coat will be oily but will not mat. You should bathe them every four days when they are in oil. You do not have to wrap them but if their coat is very long you might need to put some scrunchies on them to keep the coat off the floor and to keep the male dogs from peeing on their coats. I am still new to this so I really just saying what I have been doing. I know some people use Neutrogena Body Oil (fragrance free) and add that to water and pour over the coat. I know what works for one dog might not work for another so sometimes it is trial and error. I have a hard time keeping scrunchies on my boy but his coat is getting to the point where I need to do something if I am going to continue showing him. He just has one point toward his championship and he has turned out bigger than I had hoped but he has been a great learning experience for me. I have attached a picture of him; I had just taken him out of oil and he was still a little damp and not brushed out real well yet. |
I use Protect-A-Coat from Summerwinds. It is great. I have not yet wrapped my girl and have been advised by a top show breeder not to wrap her at this point. |

Thanks for the replys |
Thank you as well...I don't show Izzy as she is too small but her coat is getting dry from the furnace being on this winter (this is our first winter with her and just the past two weeks I've noticed her coat being dryer than usual). |

Here is the link. I suppose you can start using it on them as soon as you want to. My girl is eight months old but I only recently found out about it. I have been putting her in oil since she was four months old. Nothing worked and seemed to really dry her coat causing the underside to matt. This is a very light oil. http://www.summerwinds.com/CoatCare.html#PROTECTACOAT |

I used Neutragena... And add it to the final rinse after her bath.......but, I do rinse some of it out.......Also, not sure if I am doing this right.....but, sometimes during the week between shampoos....I add a little to my hands and work it into the tips and spay water on her coat....before I brush...not sure if she is growing or not...LOL..... Someone tell me if I am doing this right...LOL....it is sure trial and error....mostly error on my end though...... |
I use all systems humectant coat oil. Before that I was using plush puppy sea breeze oil but was starting to have a hard time getting it. I love them both. I never wrap and have 2 dogs here in full coat without any problems. I tried to wrap and my dogs found it to be a fun way to drag the others around the house by. |
I use the coat handler 15-1 conditioner mixed with small amounts of neutrogena body oil, blowing it into the coat... |
Great info.... |
I LOVE Summerwinds Protect A Coat! I put Radar in the sink fill it up to his knees put a cup of summerwinds and mix it in the water and pour over him for about 3 minutes towel dry and then blow him out dry and then I wrap him and I don't bathe again until about 4 to 5 days. I can't tell you how well Radar's coat grew and how fast it grew with Summerwinds. Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |
What does this product actually do? Is it just to keep mats out, or help it grow, or....? |

Elvis's coat has been doing so well with it and it really helped clear up some dry skin he had from the almond oil I had been using! :D Now it looks soooo healthy! We are working through our first gallon of it! |

This was his first time out a couple weeks ago, he did pretty well, just a little shy so we are working on building his confidence! |

Do you use the oil on Molly too? Do you have to wrap the coat if you use Summerwinds? |

No I don't use oil on her coat yet! I will when she's almost a year old. You don't have to wrap the coat if it's not floor length while in oil. I always wrap in oil when they are older and I'm trying to grow coat especially if the coat is on the floor. |

1 Attachment(s) I have found that straight nutrogena light sesame formula is what has worked with my dogs and I have grown some awesome coats and many without much wrapping at all. Key is keeping it clean I have tried many products and always go back to this. I am careful not to get it soaked into the skin, I spray the comb and comb thru the top part of the coat so not to get it soaked into the skin, I take the coat and comb underneath and hold it up and then from where the comb is, I mist on the nutrogena and I do put it on a bit heavy. This is the first show coat I grew. He is 4 1/2 years old here in this pic. I wasn't sure I was going to like a black background with him but the lighting really showed off his coat.. and after all that work we may as well have some great shots of the coat LOL But everyone has to find that product that works for them and their dogs and helps them obtain that gorgeous coat in the end. Thanks Deana!!! Squeakers is gorgeous! Love that boy and his coat! Mom is using that oil on Quaker right now, he has a more fragile coat than Elvis and it seems to be doing great! I agree...no matter what you use keep those coats clean and tangle free...that is more than half the battle! |
Thanks Jackie I am glad that Nutrogena is helping Quakers coat. I just love it. I gotta get some new pics of Squeakers boy Toy he is really looking nice. Finally getting him to body out a little he was staying a skinny lil thing kinda like his older sis ZsaZsa I am still working with her, she is bodying out some. This line is slower maturing in size so its worth the wait. Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |
