170 Dogs Surrendered From Nebraska Farm They are going to need a lot of help. http://www.ketv.com/news/13337441/detail.html OMAHA, Neb. -- More than 170 animals living in substandard conditions were taken from a dog breeder in central Nebraska on Wednesday night and transferred to the Nebraska Humane Society. Investigators said they found dogs that were forced to stand 24 hours a day in wire cages. Some of the dogs were pregnant and all were filthy, investigators said. It took hours to check in the 170 dogs. Three of the animals will most likely have to be put down because of aggression, said NHS's Mark Langan.Langan said workers ran through a checklist on each dog, noting the sex, breed and a guess about each dog's age. Medical issues were also noted. The dogs will take a while to get ready for adoption, but NHS President Judy Varner said she expects Omaha to come through for the animals once they are ready. "It would be wonderful for some of the dogs who have lived their lives in these conditions to spend the last years of their lives in somebody's home," Varner said. Because the dog breeder surrendered the dogs he will not face any charges. However, he will not be allowed to ever breed animals again, NHS officials said. The Humane Society is already full, so Varner said room will have to be made for the dogs. There will be a half-price sale on animal adoption beginning Sunday |
We had a similar situation here a few months back (I believe it was at the end of December). I "rescue" was shut down and I believe somewhere in the range of 100 animals were brought into the humane society. With all the news coverage, all were adopted out within a couple of weeks. Makes you wonder where all these homes are the rest of the time. Hopefully those poor pups will all be in new, clean, safe and loving homes soon! |

YAY FOR WHOEVER STEPPED IN AND TOOK CHARGE   omg that makes me sick they had to live like that and there are thousands more out there needing saving.....That man only can't breed again...I think he should be fined for Animal Cruelty & let HIM spend a few months standing in a cage |

Update OMAHA, Neb. -- People lit up the phone lines at the Nebraska Humane Society on Thursday, asking about adoptions for 178 dogs who were rescued from a central Nebraska farm on Wednesday. The animals were living in substandard conditions and were taken from a dog breeder in central Nebraska on Wednesday night and transferred to the Nebraska Humane Society. Investigators said they found dogs that were forced to stand 24 hours a day in wire cages. Some of the dogs were pregnant and all were filthy, investigators said. The animals are going to need a lot of emotional rehabilitation before they can go out to loving homes, NHS officials told KETV NewsWatch 7 on Thursday. The good news is that most of them only had minor health problems. Two of the dogs had to be euthanized for medical reasons and two more may be put down for aggression, according to NHS spokeswoman Pam Wiese. "Some of them didn't even know sunlight. I have no idea if any of these dogs have ever been walked on a leash or even know what stairs are," Wiese said. Veterinarian Dr. Tanja Katz said the dogs were kept in stacked wire cages, which injured their feet. She said it also caused the emotional problems."It really makes them introverted, fearful -- it's hard on them that way. Healthwise, they don't move around or stretch out. They're not normal dogs," Katz said. It will be a couple of weeks before the dogs can be adopted, but the Humane Society is offering a half-price sale on Sunday to make room for the dogs. NHS said it is in need of warm blankets for its pets. They're also asking for soft, nonchunky canned dog food. I will be getting as many of these Items as I can together and taking them to the shelter. If there is anyone who would like to donate anything And wants to send or what ever let me know. Thank you |

Oh my gosh, 178 dogs!! I'm so glad that they were surrendered. I pray that they all go to very loving homes where they can live happily for the rest of their lives without living in a cage! |
Because the dog breeder surrendered the dogs he will not face any charges. However, he will not be allowed to ever breed animals again, NHS officials said. seriously no recourse at all for someone like that i dont think thats is acceptable at all! |

I'll look around and see what I have to donate -will towels do if I don't have any blankets ???? |

message from NHS person I just got this from my dogster group I posted there for donations. The NHS definitely can use any donations. I work there and have been working with all these pups, and they are just the sweetest pups!! It's easy to see that they are becoming happy with their new place at the shelter. Any toys, blankets, towels, dog beds, etc...would all be helpful. There are about 175 dogs so anything would help! __________________ |
i have a TON of extra blankets and some canned food...i can go and buy more. what is the address to mail donations to? i could just BEAT THE LIVING CRAP out of these people that do this to these babies. |

Thank you for everyone who has and will reply and who would like to help out. They are still in need of donations getting over 170 animals in all at once is a huge and I mean HUGE Undertaking And takes alot of funds and supplies. They are asking for Vets help in the area and Blankets, towels, food, toys, money, and anything else you can think of they will need. I have been on the phone with my contact at the shelter and We talked about resuce groups that can help to. I was talking to a few peple yesterday that said they wanted to adopt some of the pups. I told them to consider getiing one of the dogs that were already at the shelter and need homes Now. They are even having a 1/2 price adoptions. The dogs from the mill will need so much help before they will be able to go to homes. Another lady I talked to Kinda pi**ed me off she said" I wanna go down and get a female Yorkie before they spay her so I can breed." I had to hold back but told her Everyone of the dogs will be spayed befor they go to any new homes. I could not beleave she said that ! Any way if you have Any ? please feel free to Ask here of PM me. Thank you |

I gathered up some towels (3-4) and a handful of rags, too. Then I filled the box with toys that my dogs don't play with. Yeah, they're not new, but most are never played with, either. And I figure they could use those just as much as anything new. I'm tempted to throw in some bones and a can of Canidae before I seal it up, but it's pretty full... and when I say a box is full, that means it's overflowing LOL |
