Rescues Needed in Miami (Dade County) There are 5 senior yorkies in the Miami Dade animal services. I can't imagine how someone could give up their companion after having them so long. Lets help these guys. I am willing to foster one! Gizmo and Linda are especially pulling at my heart strings. Come on guys, I know we can save at least one of these poor babies! I wish I could help. Sending many prayers they are get safe and loving homes. |
They ALWAYS have yorkies but it is not easy to get them out of there. They do work with some rescues though...You might want to contact them and they can tell you who they currently are working with! |
It is sad to see so many. I hope they find good homes soon |
I will call the shelter tomorrow and get more info on adopting, rescues this shelter works with, and any more details on the dogs - You listed 5 which included Max 10 YO A1587108 but I could not find him on the list today - These are the ones I found that were Yorkie / Yorkie mixes Pickles 8 YO 13# A1368122 - stray can be adopted 1/17/14 Linda 4 YO 10# A1557321 - stray can be adopted 1/23/14 Gismo 7 YO 3# A1586849 - stray can be adopted 1/18/14 Brock 8 YO 5# A1587432 - stray can be adopted 1/20/14 Oreo mix 3 YO 10# A1586821 - stray can be adopted 1/18/14 |
jilwilliams- thank you! I have been thinking about these babies non-stop! Let me know if you find out anything! |
I would like to hear what the result is. A few years ago I tried to get involved, but not having foster homes in FL was an issue. They did have a group that transported them out of FL....some Railway/Railroad sounding group. The one national group I contacted about this shelter told me they would not pull from there because of the problems with diseases in the shelter. (I never found out if that was valid about the shelter). Over the years, I have seen a ridiculous amount of yorkies posted in that shelter. Bothers me, but difficult not having people in southern FL. |
Called Shelter - Left A Voice Mail I called and was transferred - I left a message for a gentleman to call me back - I had a break at work but told him I would be busy for a few more hours then I would call him back - I have relatives in South FL - West Palm Beach area that might be able to help us pull - they are also very close with their dog sitter who is almost part of their family and he might have good contacts that would be useful - I'm hoping to call back around 2 and will post another update - |
I Have A Contact Number For Someone Who Pulls From Miami-Dade Cliff Notes: a good friend of mine told me a story about pulling a dog from Miami - I contacted her this afternoon for clarification and she uses a 3rd party to pull - she said there was too much trouble [BS] to pull directly and we live 4 hours north of Miami and transport can be arranged to a point closer to us - If the animal is not spayed/neutered the person who pulls has to sign a waiver stating they will get the animal serialized w/in x number of days - My friend was very reluctant to give me her contact person b/c the people who pull have been stuck w/animals [mainly] b/c rescues have backed out at the last minute after the animal has been pulled and now the people who have just pulled the animal are stuck with finding a foster home or a permanent home - I told her I was interested in fostering Brock and I gave her his ID number - She gave me the contact number and I just texted the person - I hope to speak w/her this weekend and will let you know - I will ask about diseases from Miami-Dade - Are there any other questions any of you would like me to ask? Will keep you updated - |
Pulling From Miami-Dade I talked to my friend's contact and there will not be an issue to pull from Miami-Dade and I can get the dogs here to my area w/in a few days - I am going to check on two yorkies Brock and Max - neither are listed on the website but I have their numbers and both can be tracked - If you want to foster Linda or Gismo - let me know and we need to have a plan on how to get the dog(s) to Texas - I was told when we have the dog we want she can put a hold on the dog in 5 minutes - she also lives in the next town from me so picking up a dog will be very easy - Let me know - I can foster here at my house while we wait on a transport to TX - |
you guys rock! I am very interested in Linda and Gizmo, I'd love to be able to save them both, I will get looking into what I can do. I did have a dog rescued from Lancaster that I just had the puller put on a plane for me, it was a little pricey but knowing she is alive is worth it. I know we can help these guys- maybe they have improved things over there, you never know. |
Do You Want To Put A Hold On Linda And Gizmo? Let me know - I think we can put a hold on the animals anytime [as in even 1 AM in the morning] - I have a friend who flies for Continental / United - even if they fly with a flight attendant my friend still thinks it is $125 per dog or cat - Let me see if we can get any info from the rescuers in South FL - they might be able to help with contacts for transport - Just for info - where is your nearest airport? Continental / United has a hub in Houston - |
I am near the DFW international airport. I didn't know they could fly with the flight attendant, that's kinda cool. I could do 1 at that price but not both :( |
Transport From FL to TX I don't think getting from FL to TX will be a problem - I think everything will work out fine - My contact was delivering a dog tonight then she is going to a adoption event tomorrow - I should hear from her sometime tomorrow or at the latest Sunday - I sent her info on Brock to find out what happened to him - Miami-Dade is a SUPER HIGH kill facility - my friend who monitors their site told me M-D went from 309 dogs to 140 dogs in one day - that is how many are put down - last week they were only accepting puppies - too many dogs - Let me know if you want to rescue both Linda and Gizmo - she said it only takes 5 min to put a hold on a dog - |
I live in Miami. I live very south, almost to Homestead. I can not have another dog now (sigh---I want another but space, vet bills for my older dogs now and just life will not permit) but maybe I can help. I could foster for a few days... I am not sure if I could even get to the shelter to pull because I work and do not drive at night. I could take care of the pups for a few days. I am just sick looking at the pictures... and know MDC is high kill. There was an orandance passed that stopped the killing but I guess it was overturned due to funding. I am so very sad |
thanks lil sis, I may take you up on that foster offer sometime. I am going to try and save some and then get them adopted so fosters would be great. To anyone else that wants to help please PM me. One or two saved might not seem like a lot but I am sure it seems like the whole word to that one or two dogs. :D |
Lil Sis We Have People Who Can Pull But if you could foster for a few days that would be FABULOUS - I'm working on getting an estimate to pull and transport from Miami to my area - North Central Florida - I'm in-between Gainesville and Ocala - There are plenty of drivers and one driver is my contact's husband who works in Brevard County (Cocoa Beach area) once a week and my contact lives in the next county - I am not certain on what day he works but I was told there is no problem getting the dogs from Miami to Brevard - I [obviously] want to go the least expensive route and if you could foster we could use my contact's husband - My contact (Mel) is having one of those [few] days - she was given a dog to foster and had his microchip scanned and found out he was stolen and she was returning him last night , another foster dog had puppies today, she was going to an adoption event today, I think today or tomorrow she is delivering two dogs to a new family - and the list goes on - I will get more info on the transport as I am new to this and not certain how everything works - Lil Sis how far are you from the shelter? Could you go the shelter or near to pick up a dog after he/she has been pulled? Or where would be a good place for someone to meet you to drop off a dog to foster for a few days? PLEASE be specific as I haven't been to Miami in years and I will need to pass this info on when I get more details I will get the info for the person you need to contact and Private Message you - I don't have that info or I would give it to you now - Thanks :) |
I hope that all of you are thinking about the vetting needs and/or requirements. These pups will need to be healthy enough for travel and each airline has requirements for what they want them to have. Most want a travel document that is to be completed and signed by a vet. ALSO, if taking any into your home, I strongly suggest that you quarantine them. You could end up with your own pups being ill. It is not as simple as just taking them out of a shelter and sending them to someone. I cannot help at all because we have yorkies dying in shelters in Texas...so my priority is them. I would suggest you reach out to United Yorkie Rescue .. and if they cannot help, perhaps they have some other contacts. They used to not pull from Miami Dade, but that may have changed over the years. Not trying to discourage anyone, but it is never as simple as it is being made to sound; and please do consider that some of these pups may have immediate vetting needs. |
I know first hand how this can get out of hand. I don't know about everyone else but I plan to take any saved to my shelter. We have a great medical team. Usually as long as they are not dying and you let the vet know they will give a health certificate to save a dog. The one I pulled from lancaster was literally 1/2 an hour away from being pts- a 10 yr old cocker spaniel with a heart murmur and dry eye, they health cert'd her and put her on plane and I picked her up and she was in foster for 2 weeks until she was healthy enough for adoption then got adopted the same day! It was the best feeling to know I helped save her- but the costs of all that was about $300- so yes please make sure you can afford any emergent medical care before pulling. |
LadyJane - I appreciate your post and yes we need to be realist when we even just THINK about pulling, let alone pull and bring into our home w/other animals and our family - I now see why rescues do not pull from M-D - it gets complicated - I asked about the diseases and the only answer I received was regarding Hillsborough County (Tampa) I also know another shelter had a problem with parvo and many dogs were put down but I do not remember which shelter - If you have any advise for us PLEASE do not hesitate to post - in my area we mostly get hunting dogs we rarely get small dogs - there are some in Gainesville and Ocala but nothing like M-D - Many times good intentions can go wrong so please post any concerns you have as I have never pulled from a shelter before - all of my dogs are rescue but they have not been in a shelter - I have experience with rabbit rescue since 2006 but that's a completely different than pulling a dog - Thanks, :) |
Please Ignore My Mispelled Words I just read my last post - please ignore my misspelled / incorrect words - sorry! |
Thank you Linda for keeping us real. I know I have wanted to foster before and the reality was I couldn't. I do not have funds for vet care. Sadly I have two dogs who are ill and my focus. I also have a dh who has a com premised immune system ( myeloma) But I looked ... I could put the, in a playpen in a separate area. That could work for 1 or two days....if they have parvovirus I can not bring in my home. I live south....sw216 st. ....not far from turnpike. Any landmark in south area is ok. Pm me if this works and my tiny bit of help will help |
Fostering a pup is not something to take lightly. We all want to help these poor pups...they tug at our heartstrings. This is why I feel very strongly that people who foster should do so with an established group. I have seen many independent rescues run into so many issues...and then they want someone to bail them out. Problem is that if everyone did that, what a mess we would have. Anyone interested in saving the pups in Miami should probably find out what groups pull from there, look into them and what they do and then, perhaps offer to help them. Just my thoughts... |
I just checked.. it appears only Linda is left. She is avaliable on Wednesday. |
oh well that is good news. I hope you and Jill continue trying to help these guys. I am going to look into helping the yorkies around DFW. Good job everyone. It's nice to see everyone care so much! |
[I think] Linda And Pickles Have Been Adopted The last two Yorkies were Linda and Pickles - today was the day for Linda to be up for adoption [and I think Pickles too] - both are no longer listed - hoping this is good news :) |
Sick Foster Dog From Miami-Dade My friend is fostering a dog that was pulled from Miami [by a rescue] and was supposedly quarantined for 10 days and was supposedly given meds - She found out today this was not true - the foster dog made two of her dogs sick - one had to go to the vet today and the bill was $650 and her dog has to go back back to the vet tomorrow - She was assured [by the rescue] the foster dog had been vetted and agreed to foster for the same rescue I contacted and mentioned under this post - She has and fosters very large mastiff and corso dogs - She also found out that Miami does have an issue with diseases - as LadyJane mentioned in this post - I will post more details when I get them from my friend - she is absolutely livid, livid, livid right now so I didn't ask her a lot of questions - will post another update after I talk with her - Having issues pulling from Miami appears to have been a blessing in disguise - |
I am so sorry to hear this. I don't know why any rescue would do such a thing. It is always so important to quarantine new pups from a shelter....to knowingly lie and expose someone's personal pups is just awful. :( |
We assume that all dogs from shelters are sick. They are vaccinated when the are recieved and then placed in the general population. No time whatsoever to build up immunities. We won't take any puppies that have been placed in the shelter but frequently they call us to say they have a new litter and we'll take them from the owner. They try but realize how difficult it is save them once they're exposed. Our local shelter has such a high incidence of parvo and now distemper that we don't even pull from them. Sad but too risky for our own and foster dogs. We don't have kennels and all our dogs are in foster. Only a few of us have set ups for isolation. |
Sick Foster Dog From Miami-Dade This is an update regarding pulling and fostering from Miami-Dade - My friend fostered a dog pulled from M-D and she was assured via a Facebook conversation the dog had been boarded for 10 days and given antibiotics - All of the records she received for the foster dog came from M-D - no info on boarding or meds - This cannot be the case as several of her dogs became ill and one went to her personal vet - After 3 days at the vet (dog went home at night) her vet suggested she take her dog to the University of Florida so at 6:15 last night I received a text she was taking Ayla to UF - From texts I received beginning at 2 AM this morning: 2 AM she made it through a lung trachea and the vet was able to get samples to grow a culture - she has breathing tubes and nebulizer - By 8:30 AM her breathing was better and she is back on several antibiotics and her kidneys are also being monitored - By 8 PM tonight Ayla was up and around a little and her kidneys are good so far and she is still on oxygen - I wanted to post an update earlier but the foster dog went to the rescue today for an adoption event - several hours later my friend told the rescue she did not want the dog back and she needed to concentrate on getting her dogs well - I didn't want to post something to YT and by some freak chance this would be mentioned on a FB post and the rescue involved saw it on FB before the foster dog went to the adoption event - My friend had one other foster dog who is already on antibiotics [from an injury before my friend fostered her] and the rescue agreed to pick up the second dog and foster her too - she was picked up at 8 PM tonight - Alya lost 12 pounds during this ordeal - I feel really bad for my friend - I tried for several days to pull from Miami a few weeks ago but it never worked out - I have two little dogs that are around 12 pounds and my dad's yorkie is around the same weight too - I really feel it was a blessing that we could not pull b/c I'm now wondering if a small dog would have survived this - Alya is 100+ pounds - I will probably post another update when the culture results come back just for FYI - |
