Need to surrender a yorkie My Mom has Alzheimer's & had to go to a personal care home. She has an 8 year old Yorkie boy, Beau. I already have the 2 littermates. My little girl acts like she's been thrown away. He's up to date on all his shots & is healthy. Beau loves walks. He doesn't like to be held but he has to be sitting touching you at all times. He likes to be brushed, has good teeth, and loves to chew pig ears, bully sticks & steak bones. As for being house trained my Mom used papers & Beau did not do well. Of course her mind wasn't right & didn't care where he went either. Beau has been living with me for 3 weeks & has only had 1 accident. He adapted to going outside quite well I think. He's a smart little dog, will be the first to greet you when you come home and real obedient. He needs a loving home. If you know of a nice person that would love him & welcome him in their home in the Pittsburgh area, please let me know. This is very hard to do but I work, am at the home to visit my Mom everyday - where she loving calls her cellblock. This is all just too much for me to handle. |
Bump! |
I'm sorry to hear about your mom - it must be so difficult to watch your mom live with Alzheimer's. A couple quick questions - how far from Pittsburgh would you allow Beau to go? Do you have any photos to share? Would you allow us to post Beau's info on FB to try to spread the word that he needs a good home? (And how much does he weigh - I know some people are interested in knowing that.) I am about 2 1/2 hrs from PGH and would be happy to post a request on FB if you would allow it (and had a photo to share, that would help). LMK. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a pic of Beau. He weighs 10-11 lbs. I think closer to 11 lbs. He is very light colors. Light grey & very light tan. One ear stands up & the other is down. He is neutered. I have no problem if he's 2 1/2 hours away from Pittsburgh. I just want him in a loving home where he gets lots of attention. I want my Mom to have him for Christmas at my house for a last visit. I had my Mom stay overnight for Thanksgiving & poor Beau moped & didn't leave the couch for 3 days after. I only want to do this for my Mom & only one more time to poor Beau. I would be so thankful if you could help me find a loving home. My Mom would too. |
He is adorable. I hope you can find him a loving home. |
dog I wish you could have hired a live in to care for mom and Beau. It is so hard to take away a dog. I understand you have to do what you must do. I pray little Beau will have a loving home. It will be hard separating him. |
He looks so very sweet. I hope he gets a great home soon and sorry about your Mom. |
Hoping you find a home for sweet little Beau. |
Thanks for sharing his photo -- I put it out on my FB page to see if anyone knows anyone who could give him a good home. He's adorable! Too bad I can't have any more due to HOA restrictions in my neighborhood. I would take him in a heartbeat! |
Thank you Maxwell for helping with the FB page. I sure hope something works out. I called our vet to see if he knew of anyone. One of the staff said she would take him but she already has 1 dog & 2 cats. I don't know about cats. Beau has never been around any & it sounds like her house is full. I don't know how long my Mom is going to remember Beau - her mind is going. I think she must have had a mild stroke since she's been in & it's only been a couple of weeks. I couldn't go today & tonight we have snow & ice. She called she's hungry & I said eat some of the ice cream or fruit cups in her mini-frig. She didn't know she had a frig & where it is. I had to explain that's what her Christmas tree is sitting on. She's bored - I tell her to turn on the TV & she says I have a TV? Meanwhile I have signs taped on how to turn on & off the TV. Of course it don't help she has the mosaiced pic of Beau I made her above her bed. One day she will be asking me why that pic is there. And one day she won't know me. Nurses are $50.00 an hour. NO WAY we could ever afford nursing. I tried getting someone 3 hours a day & that's what I would have had to pay. We pay $80 a day at the personal care home. I have caregiver burnout. She went kicking & screaming. She tells everyone I put her in a cell. So I put Cellblock 310 on her kleenex box & we make a joke about it. Alzheimer's is UGLY! |

So sorry about your poor mum, this is a sad story,,,, hope beau gets his forever home soon.please keep us updated on him and maybe u can tell his new owners to join yt , so we can follow beau's journey xx |
I hope Beau finds a loving home soon!! Perhaps you could contact a rescue in your area and ask them to do a courtesy post for you on Petfinder. I would bet, under the circumstances with your mother, that one of them would help you out. |

I saw on FB that SAY had a foster home in Altoona, PA, so maybe they will help you in Pittsburgh even though they are closer to Philly. Please let us know if you get any leads for little Beau! |
I'm so sorry you are going through this with your mother. My mother also had that horrid disease and it is hell oh the victim as well as her family. Beau would do well if you gave him to a rescue. They will take the time to screen potential owners as well as finding a good foster home until he is adopted. You have enough to worry about right now so let one of them handle it for you. God bless you and your mother. |
I hope you find someone right away. I wish these types of forums would be by state, it would be easier to find them homes. Good luck. |
Thank you everyone. I submitted the form for Save a Yorkie & will go from there. I've asked everyone I know. I'm taking Mom out to lunch tomorrow & stop at the house so she can see Beau. I just hope he don't pout for 3 days & not leave the couch after seeing her. My Mom hates being in a home - she calls it a jail. Cries all the time. |
Ideally, you would find a way to keep your mother and her companion (Beau) together the most possible instead of separating them... Pets are the best therapy a person can get... I don't intent to overrule your decisions, just suggesting to consider any resource available before separating them. There's home-health agencies that work with gobernment insurances like Medicare etc... Best wishes |

Just seeing this. I am so sorry for all you are going through. I have an idea about a couple who adopted from me and moved to PA a couple of years ago from TX. They are great pet owners. I don't know if they might be interested in another. I will contact them tomorrow. |
I am so sorry for all you are going through. It would be wonderful if your mom and Beau wouldn't have to be separated but if it must be, I hope you find him a loving home. My thoughts and prayers are with you. |
Beau has a home! I submitted a form to Save a Yorkie & within 12 hours received a phone call that they would take him. They had a foster home for Beau until adopted & giving to them on Saturday. I brought my Mom home yesterday to spend the day with Beau & have her good bye. She was upset not knowing if she would never know what happened to him. Dogs can visit the nursing home as long as they have shot records & such so we took Beau to the home when I took her back last night so everyone could see him. Her night nurse that gives her insulin shots & meds wanted him. After lots of talking my Mom let her have him. i think it's going to work out great. The director, asst director at the home all have Yorkies. And they bring to work once a week or so - the patients love it - a therapy dog. The nurse plans on taking Beau to work once in a while & can have visits with my Mom. And bring her pictures. The nurse was off today so she picked him up at my Mom's room. My Mom forgot all about yesterday & we had to go through it all over again that Beau was going to a new home. Ugh! But in the end she does feel better knowing she'll get to see Beau once in a while. It was heartbreaking but the staff seen how hard it was too on my Mom & it's so family oriented - they will be extra special with her about this too. I'm hoping my Mom will accept the home better now too as she will be more connected with the home that it's her family & new home. I count it as an answer to prayer. But when I called the Yorkie rescue they was not happy about it. They were worried what kind of home I gave Beau & I didn't investigate & such. I already told the nurse if Beau don't work out, please give him back. We'll find another home. She said no way, he's hers. He's following her around already & sitting with her the minute she sits down. She's in heaven she says. I think everything will work out just fine. And if my Mom could see him once in a while when she brings him to work it couldn't be more perfect. As the director says, he don't even like the name personal care home. It's their home & should be called home of personal care. It's a YORKIES RULE personal care home to me. |
I am so glad you found a home for Beau and one where your Mom will still be able to see him once in awhile. Seeing how she works there you can keep tabs on how he is doing in his new home. |
That is such a perfect solution. So glad your Mum can still see her little pal sometimes. So sorry you are both going through her condition, my grandmother also had this. |
It sounds like a great solution, and I hope it works out well in the long run especially for the little Yorkie. It may help to ease your mom's dislike of being in a home. |
Sounds to me like it's all working out in the end! And it's a great solution, if the nurse brings Beau in sometimes and tells your mom about his antics and shares pictures with her. It's also good to know how quickly Save a Yorkie got back to you and could have helped you. Sounds like they are a good organization. |
Wow...what a great outcome. It sounds like a win, win situation. Your mom will still get to see Beau once in a while and it sounds like he got a good home as well. I think Save A Yorkie was probably just worried about Beau going to the right home....but it sounds like it all worked out for the best anyways. |
That is so nice! I'm so glad everything worked out. |
What a great solution! Wonderful!:D |
