Remember Shira? Update! |
Do you know where in Colorado?? |
Darn it! I thought it was on some of the previous Shira posts, but I guess not because I couldn't find it. LoveMyBabies has been in contact with the foster mom (she paid a huge part of her medical bills), so she might know. She did say the foster mom was super nice, though. Foster mom's e-mail: fuzzywug@aol.com Isn't she the cutest little thing? |
Oh my gosh!!!!!! I hadn't read this story before. I am in tears for this little sweetheart. Do you think her foster mom could let her be adopted out. Man I couldn't. I wish I could get her but you have to live in the state they are fostered in don't you? |

OMG! Now I am really excited. I can't wait, either. Let us know as soon as you know something. OK???? :D I'm so glad you found it on the old posts. I thought it was there, but when I looked I just couldn't find it! |
I spoke with Trish yesterday ... Shira is doing well, but still has a long recovery. We may have an opportunity to meet her this afternoon ... we are so excited! Trish sounds like a wonderful person and has rescues other than Shira. Also learned that Shira's surgery was done at the hospital where Toto sees her local vet. Will keep you updated! :) |
Oh, my! I suppose it was hopeful thinking that she was ok now. I know how sorry I felt for that little doll. I don't know how people can do things like they did to her. I did notice that when they spoke of her recovery that she couldn't swim and that therapy didn't work out. I hope you get to meet her. She's pretty as a picture, so to speak! :) |

Karen ... Her recovery will take quite a while, as I understand it. Trish said that she went for her first walk on Friday! We are really excited to get to meet her! She sounds like such a little sweetheart. Trish also said that she had never been allowed to get on the sofa or bed and had to sleep in a crate at night. I cannot imagine sitting on the sofa or sleeping without Toto snuggled up to us! Lily's Mom ... We aren't sure yet if we are ready to have two babies or that we would be able to adopt her by meeting the criteria. We have been seriously discussing getting another but we will have to know without a shadow of a doubt that we can make the same committment that we made to Toto. As far as providing for her, yes, she would have the absolute best there is but there are so many considerations ... not the least of which is Toto's reaction. We haven't had the opportunity to really socialize her with other animals due to her size. Everyone that we know who are animal lovers have large ones and she is just terrified of most of them! :) So for now, we will just take it one step at the time. I will keep you updated. ;) |
Visited with Shira! She is adorable! We had a great time this afternoon! Visited with Trish & family for 2-3 hours. They are wonderful and Shira is healing up very quickly! It will still be approximately 6-8 weeks before she will be completely healed but she is just a gorgeous little girl and walking very well on 4 legs! That poor baby has been through so much ... she is just a sweetheart and it's hard to understand how anyone could ever mistreat her! That's OK, because she is adjusting nicely with people who love her and don't mind her at all sitting on their furniture or sleeping in their beds!! She makes it pretty clear that she really loves Trish's daughter ... they have a really special connection! She insists it's because she is the one who went to pick her up [her "rescuer"] but I believe it's because Shira knows that Heather loves her! :) The surgery that she went through was very painful but successful and her hair is growing back and she is just such a precious baby! She naturally didn't leap into our arms nor become an instant friend of Toto! We just visited and allowed all the pups to kinda play if they wanted and get used to each other. Toto is not socialized with other dogs and today was the first time she has really spent time around other small ones. Trish's male Yorkie, Tango was particularly taken with her! :) After they all visit a few times, I believe they will all eventually become friends and we will just see how things go. Right now, the Miller's are tired and getting ready to call it a day ... matter of fact Toto ate her dinner and immediately climbed onto her Queen bed and passed out!! :) We will move her to our bed and she will never wake up! ;) |
oh thats great!!!! its so cool that you got to meet her. her and her new family all sound so sweet! |
I think it's so nice that they are so close to you. Toto will probably find he loves having friends to play with! :D It's nice that you got to spend some time with them. However things turn out with Shira, I'm certain that she will be loved for the rest of her life. I could be wrong, but I would think that a little dog that had been treated the way she was treated would be a bit stand-offish with people until she grew to trust them. I think her hair is pretty. Kacee's head is turning pale blonde and her back is turning silver. |
It is nice to finally find Yorkie lovers here in Grand Junction! I hope that Toto can make friends and at last learn some social skills with other animals ... she doesn't meet a "human" stranger so we have done pretty well there! :) I do hope that in time Shira will learn what a loveable little girl she really is ... she has had such a sad little life! My Patrick would love to have about 10 minutes "quality time" with the man that so mistreated her! I suppose it's a good thing that he won't ... it would not be a pretty sight! Shira's little hair is growing back ... dark at the root and a gorgeous silver color at the ends. I believe that she will be a beautiful little girl in time, not that she isn't now, but her little legs are so tiny due to the lack of exercise. I believe in no time she will have great little muscles like Trish's babies. They get lots of good exercise and have the neatest muscles in their little legs ... I hadn't really paid much attention to muscles but realized yesterday that Toto has nothing on hers but pure fat!! Sadly for her ... her new exercise regimine starts today!! Another realization for me is that Toto has been pampered entirely too much! :) Today is definitely the "first day of the rest of her healthy Yorkie life"!! As far as Shira coming to live with us ... we have already discussed it a lot [Patrick & I] and yes, at this point we would love for her to become a member of our "happy little band" if we should qualify! BUT ... it will be entirely up to her! We will see over the next few weeks how things go and if she seems to warm up to us and she and Toto get to know each other ... we'll see! The last thing in the world we would want would be for her to be unhappy ... she's had enough of that in her short little life and it would break our hearts to think she didn't really want to be in our home! We just love her already ... can you tell?! ;) We'll just take it one day at the time! :) |
Aww, that's wonderful that you went to visit Shira, bettyeanne! :) That would be so heartwarming to hear your family adopt little Miss Shira, I hope that all works out for you. You and Patrick have such great hearts, and Toto will have a blast with Shira around! Good luck, I can't imagine any other family spoiling Shira as much as you guys would! :p |
Just getting to this post...So you are going to adopt her!!! I hope so, she really needs a foever home. That's how I got Harley, his owner couldnt take care of him anymore, so I bought him from her!!! How do you pronounce her name. I have a She-Ra, pronounced like it is spelled!!! |
Bettyeanne, Yes, I can tell you are crazy about her already. Keep me updated on her if you can. When I first read about her, it bothered me so much. I kept going back to the site to read the updates. After I read the last one, it sounded as though she was so much better that I posted it here. I'm glad I did now! :p |
yorkieusa ... Thanks so much for posting the notice about Shira!! :) We just fell so in love with her. If you have read the latest update ... her recovery from the surgery is coming along really well! That little girl can walk so well, you would hardly know that she ever had a problem! She is just so precious! However, they have discovered another problem [they are asuming that she probably came from a puppymill .... certainly from a breeder who never researched nor gave a thought to their breeding program!!] ... Sorry, but I just get so angry every time I think about this and anyone who knows me, knows that when I start crying angry tears, you better back up!!! She had been exhibiting some "odd" behavier ... i.e., barking outbursts for no reason and then deep sleep. Her foster Mom, Trish, took her to the vet and they diagnosed a neurological problem that is causing seizures! It is treatable with medication, but it is just so heartbreaking that this baby has had such a sad little life ... gone through painful surgery and now will be able to run and play without all that pain and now this?! It just seems so unfair! I'm not feeling sorry for us ... we certainly haven't given up on her! We want so badly to help her and still would love for her to be a member of our family, but like I said before, the main thing we want is for her to be where she will be happy!! I just couldn't bear it to bring that baby to our home and her be unhappy! So ... right now we are going to take is a step at the time ... we will be seeing her again on Tuesday and we are just so excited. Hopefully, the medication will help her and her true, sweet little personality will be restored! ;) |
She-ra's Mama ... There's nothing we would like better than to give Shira the forever home that she deserves! But, like I said above, there are some new complications and we will just have to wait and see. We just want what's best for her and if it's us ... how wonderful that would be!! The only thing that I'm certain of ... we just love this little girl and are willing to do whatever we can for her, regardless of who gets to adopt her! We just want her to be the happiest little Yorkie girl on this planet!! BTW ... her name is pronounced Shi-ra ... I too thought is was She-ra, like your baby but quickly found that I was pronouncing it wrong. How embarassing was that?!? LOL |
fasteddie ... Thanks for the compliments and encouragement! Like I explained above, this will take a long time and we don't know how it will turn out! We only want what will be best for Shira! BTW ... there should be some special honor for the angels who are called "Foster Mom's"!! This lady and her family who are fostering are just the most wonderful, caring people and Shira's problems are just as heartbreaking for them! And Shira isn't the only foster they have! There is a really old Yorkie who was rescued from a shelter [found wandering in the streets] where noone came to claim her!! She was dirty, matted & starving!! This sweet little old lady [who has only one tooth left in her mouth!] obviously was pampered and loved by someone for her entire life! They speculate that possibly she belonged to an elderly person who died and whoever was left simply put her out in the streets!! How could they?!? She is suffering from cateracts and other eye problems, no teeth and is so skinny you can see her bones! This "Lady" is still so loving and sweet ... a true "lap dog"! She hasn't been with her foster's very long and you can see that she is thriving! She has beautiful hair and it's growing back since it had to be cut she was so impossibly matted and dirty! Her sad story doesn't end either!! She also saw the vet this week ... she is in kidney failure and only has six months left ... tops! My heart breaks for her! I would've brought her home in a heartbeat, were it not for our living accomodations! We will be moving within the next few months but for now we live in a condo that is not pet friendly [they allowed Toto because she is tiny and totally housetrained and they knew we were in a position to pay for any damage]. Soooo .... I suppose we will take this one day at the time ... meantime, we will visit as often as we can without becoming "worrywarts" and see what the future brings!! Thanks so much for your patience and concern! |
I'm so sorry to learn about the seizures. I can't help but wonder, though, if it might have been caused by being thrown. Who knows? I'm still sorry for her. Gosh! She's the cutest little thing I've ever seen. So innocent... :( |

I'm wishing her and you guys lots of luck! :) |
2 Attachment(s) Wanted to give you all a quick update on Shira!! That sweet baby has really improved and boy is she ever a fighter!! The medication is controlling her seizures but she is still having problems with her little back legs. Although it has been over two months since her surgery and everything seemed perfect, she is having problems with her little left rear leg. She has been back to the vet for x-rays, etc. he can't seem to find what the problem is so has changed her medication. She gets plenty of exercise along with her physical therapy ... her Foster's are just great and take such good care of her! We are just so happy to be a part of her life and to be able to watch her little personality begin to emerge! She has begun to really interact with other animals as well as other humans. My heart just almost stopped the day she climbed over in my lap all on her own!! This baby still has such a long, long way to go and should be the "Poster Child" for what's possible when they find themselves in rescue! One so abused and unwanted is finally realizing that there are kind humans who will love and protect them. I want you all to see a current picture of Shira ... a totally different picture of what you saw two months ago! Her little hair is beginning to grow back and there is a different look in her eyes! It's beginning to get chilly here in Colorado and because her little hair is thin, she gets so cold! I had taken her a little sweater and the other day I took her a little YorkieTalk shirt that fit her perfectly! She loves it and it's weight is perfect for her to sleep in!! Trish said she sleeps in it every night!! ;) I so hope the vet can get to the bottom of her seemingly endless problems and she can begin to have the happy life she deserves!! She is such a sweet little baby! |
I just now saw this post! You are so right! She does have a different look in her eyes. She is such a cute little doll! I know how tickled you must have been when she crawled into your lap. She's getting over the abuse, isn't she? Bless her little heart. She deserves to be pampered the rest of her life and somehow I just know she will be. :) |

Thank you all so much!! I really appreciate your interest. We feel so blessed to be able to be a part of this "process"! It's amazing to see her progress and to see that her little personality is finally emerging. The first time we saw her she was so scared and couldn't stand for anyone to touch her and we feel so priviledged to be able to watch her build trust in humans and other animals ... it makes tears well up just thinking about it! It's funny too, to see that she has that sweet Yorkie "brat" in her too!! :) The little bad habits are also easily and lovingly being corrected! It's actually good to see these little things ... means that she is eventually going to be completely normal. Sometimes I just look into those little eyes and wonder how anyone could have been so cruel to her! It will take quite some time, but this little girl will eventually be well both physically and emotionally! Will keep you updated! ;) |
