Her adoption fee is $2000! Doesn't that seem excessive? |

I looked at the rescue site and they do want 2000 adoption fee. |

that poor little dog. i'm glad she's ok after surgery but i think the rescue is insane in charging a $2000 adoption fee. who is going to pay that? just because she had surgery to repair the shunt does not mean she's a healthy pup now. she is still in for a rough life and the shunt may come back depending on how it was fixed. |
well I think YTNR is usually higher priced on a lot of their rescues - but they do take dogs no one else will take. I did find her page - I was using the link at the top of the petfinder page - that doesn't take you to the complete website - you need to go to Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue, Inc. |
Here is her page on YTNR Looking for a New Home... That fee is unbelievably high! She is in TN |
about that little Morkie She is so sweet and adorable, but who is going to pay $2000.00 for her, they are having you pay for the vet bills, that doesn't seem right, plus how do you know if she is going to be ok, i would be leary, but she is beautiful, I think someone that can afford her, will really be happy, but I would be leary of a lot of vet bills to come. |
YTNR really does have very high adoption fees for some of their dogs. I understand that their medical care has probably cost more than that, or they use the extra money to cover expenses for the older dogs, but I feel like the pricey ones won't end up getting adopted b/c people don't want to spend that much on a rescue, especially with the economy the way it is. If people were willing to spend that much they could just buy a baby from a breeder and they would know the history of their Yorkie's line. Plus, rescue dogs are more likely to have issues b/c of what has happened in their past. I am really glad that YTNR rescues these babies, but I see the high priced dogs on there for months, while the lower priced dogs get adopted more quickly. All the dogs that were over 500 in November (with some posted in September) are STILL on the website, while many of the ones priced 100-450/500 have been adopted or are in the process of being adopted. None of the higher priced ones have been reduced either, even though they have been on the site for months. These babies need forever homes, but they don't have them, I believe, b/c of their high cost. |

Since when do rescue dog get put onto the clearance rack like Walmart? |

It is absolutely not the dog's fault that it was abandoned, so please don't insinuate that I think that. As I said before, I understand that the medical costs of the dogs are why the fee is so high, but they are not being adopted and I think that the cost is what a major reason for that. I am not saying that rescue dogs should be put on "the clearance rack like Walmart," but YTNR is charging MORE for some of their dogs than even many reputable breeders would. I am a supporter of YTNR and all rescues, I was only trying to point out that by charging so high a fee, the dogs are less likely to get their well deserved forever home. |

No, if you look back I had replied earlier that I thought it was outrageous to ask that amount of money! Usually there are set fees by age and not what the pup had in medical expenses. That is why rescues take donations. (I believe Truman's fee is $150 and he had already cost more in vet bills on his first visit. He will still need to be neutered and have a dental. I adopted Doodlebug and paid $350 for his adoption fee which I opted to pay IN ADVANCE. He was a puppy and his mom had a c-section. There was the bill for that and all of the vet visits with the puppies from her liter. They had a lot of dogs in the rescue and I knew how they would have difficulty paying the expenses. When I picked him up I also brought supplies that they had asked for on their website. At Christmas I sent a small gift from Doodlebug. Bogey was a whopping $60 which included a $35 neuter deposit. I told them to keep the deposit as a donation. Then at Christmas I drove back to the IN shelter and made a donation and had pictures with Santa taken. I did all of this because I wanted to give back. I also adopted them not knowing what I was getting but wanting to give them a good home. I couldn't justify spending $2,000 on ANY dog EVER!!!!! Since I have no idea how they set their prices it is shocking to me too! YTNR is a HUGE rescue that takes in a lot of donations. Maybe someone should pose this question directly to them:confused: They do seem to have some pretty high adoption charges compared to others. Look how sick Truman is and there was no question about the money it would take to make him well. It wasn't even considered that his price should cover his medical bills. They took him because he was in need. |

I just read this thread and must say I am in shock. If it were not so late here, I would go check that adoption fee out...I have never heard of a fee like that in all my life..surely it is an error?!?!?!? |
oh my what an adorable face! |

WHo sets the adoption fee? COuld it be that the foster doesn't want to give her up? Just asking, I'm new to all of this. |

Seriously, I do not know the inside working for all rescues but I do have experience with several and as far as I have seen it is usually set by their age. Puppies being the most expensive (Doodlebug~puppy $350) and seniors (Truman~senior $150) being the least. So that also makes me wonder if a dog comes into their rescue and needs no additional care (ie~spay/nueter, dental, vaccines, etc) would their fee be reduced~I doubt it. I was always under the impression that with a set fee for adoptions the dogs that needed less vetting and their fee was say $300 the additional money from their adoption (even $10) would help cover the ones that cost more for their care. Then you add in donations it would help bring this gap closer together. Personally, I think that YHR's site is set up very well since Truman has his own little Paypal button to donate directly to his care. So even if you donated $1 you know just were your money will go~to care for the little man :animal36 |
I saw her precious little face a couple of weeks ago when searching petfinder. I clicked on her, and started to read about her having LS surgery. Since I have experience, I was drawn to her and b/c she looks like a mini Cuddles (the Morkie in my avatar) - BUT when I saw her adoption fee was $2000 - I was really, really surprised...Especially since she WILL require special food, supplements, BAT testing, etc...for LIFE :( I don't know the reasons behind that high fee, hopefully she will find a good loving home that will have the knowledge to give her the proper after care, as her chances of possibly shooting another shunt or MVD down the road is pretty high.... |

I am quite sure their Board sets the fees. |

It could be that they set the fee that high to discourage applications from people who are just looking for a cute little yorkie. There are many people who do not understand about medical issues and that might be part of the reason. I still think it is extremely high....but, if they get someone who is willing to pay that much, chances are they will be great adopters and know what they are getting involved in. Just a thought....I am not saying that I think the fee is reasonable, just trying to understand it. |

I hope she does! I am sure they will be very careful in her placement. |
