Rescue Venting~ Well, we're 5 days into the new year and we have already taken in 3 new Yorkies. It's just amazing how it never stops. Christmas week we had Yorkies coming out the wood work to be rescued. I don't think I will ever understand how people can dump their pet that has lived int heir home for 10-12 years during the holidays and expect us to drop everything and take the poor pup. I am ever astounded at the condition of some of these babies. You expect some of the pups coming from a shelter environment to be a mess but when they come from a home and they are encrusted with feces and are saturated with urine, it still, after 25 years, leaves me bewildered. I can't tell you the toll it has taken on me after all this time and the tireless hours that have been put in from too many rescue groups. It's numbing. In the end when you place that little one in the arms of the new mommy or daddy all the work disappears and the heart is over flowing with joy. Then your on to the next one~ I suppose I needed to vent. This past month in rescue has been especially hard, they call it being "burnt out". I love what I do and I will never stop rescuing pups. It's in my blood but there are those days that you just want to quit. I'm in a group with the most awesome people. Dedicated, loving ,strong, willing to do what needs to be done for the sake of the little souls that come through our doors. I am grateful. Thanks. |
hats off to you.. hat off and a bow for you...sounds like you are a very dear person |
This is from the heart....THANK YOU for all that you do for the little unwanted yorkies of the world. I'm sorry that it is getting to you. But you are human and it's got to bring you down from time to time. You obviously care a lot for these little ones and I'm sure you see the worst of the worst. I'm constantly amazed at how many yorkies end up in rescue, and thank God daily for groups like yours who fight the good fight and save so many! There are lots of us who appreciate what you do!!! |
Carol, it is tough and anyone that has done rescue for awhile becomes very jaded about people and their ethical treatment of their dogs. Maybe your post will help people understand why the dogs come first in rescue and why you work so hard to find the perfect home. Most people who put down rescue have never seen what you have seen and will never understand the pain you have seen in these little ones eyes. For some reason you have become a protector of these dogs and you are very much needed. I think the hardest rescue's for me were also the old dogs (nothing wrong with them) that were dumped at animal control because it was cheaper to put them down there and people were tired of them. My anger at these people has no end. Many old dogs came to live with me to live out their short time on earth because I believe they deserve the dignity of dying in a loving home. Keep the faith and get a punching bag so you can continue to help as many little ones as possible. |
Carole ~ As Judy said, THANK YOU so MUCH for what you do! I wish I had your strength/courage to deal with the heartache and stress. I'm so glad you are there to do the job I just cannot. I'm sure you are suffering burn-out. Is it possible to just take a short break from the work? |
Thank you for your encouragement. I am not looking for praise, please know that. How do you take a break when they need you. You can't. I'm only fostering one boy right now although he is like having three.... he will make someone a wonderful companion when he leaves my home. Totally different dog then when he came in 6 weeks ago. Some members have 4 or 5 fosters, so how can I complain.... You can never take a break, just slow down a little. There is ALWAYS something to do whether it's administrative, fostering or transports, vetting surrenders, picking up from the shelters, although I am grateful that is not a big thing here in NJ, phone interviews, arranging-organizing fundraising....it's a job that never ends. But thank for suggesting to take break. At the most a day. Prayers for all the babies that need us that they find their way to out safe and loving homes. Quote:

Carole--Was checking out your rescue website. You are an angel in disguise here on earth. Wish you were closer to KS and I could offer to re-home one of your senior rescues. I have two that have many issues so rescue problems don't faze me. If I can ever be of any help to you here in KS please PM me or e-mail at vogel3412@embarqmail.com. May your sad heart find joy in each rescue placement you make in the coming year. |

I know it must be very frustrating -- you must be a saint. I wish you the best of luck in all of your rescue endeavors. |
You are the best and a giant hero! WOW! I am so glad that there are people in the world like you and encouragement is such a small thing that I am able to give compared to you. |

I highly respect what you guys do for the rescues, and yes it is so sad how some one could just get rid of their yorkie after 10+ years. Would you mid PMing me and giving me a "day in the life" of a rescuer. Thanks. |
Hi Carol, I can totally understand your frustration....I actually cringe at this time of year when I hear people are getting puppies for Christmas...these are the dogs that you and I will be rescuing and fostering 6 months from now. It is hard not to get burnt out and jaded when you hear all the lame excuses people throw at you. To them, the dogs are disposable. People will say to me how can you stand to rescue and foster these dogs and my answer is "How Can I Not"? Having been involved with rescues for 4 years, I have kind of backed off from the admin end of it cause I tend to lose patience with people after listening to the various excuses....so for now I just foster. I'm in upstate NY and like NJ, we don't see many rescue yorkies here. Most of mine have come from Missouri, Texas and Florida. Bless you for what you do! |
If there's anything I can do to help from up here in Winnipeg - Canada (three hours North of North Dakota) please don't hesitate to contact me. |
I'm not gonna repeat it.. ditto to what everyone else has said. THANK YOU I do have a question, how do you place these dogs? here on YT? or locally? |
Thank goodness for devoted rescue orgs.! Otherwise I would of never known the pure joy and happiness Chip has brought into my life. |
God bless you in all that you do. All one has to do is to look into those little faces. I will never understand either why people do what they do. There is a special place in heaven for you and all other rescue people, because without people like you we would not have our little Roo. He was a mill dog rescue. I know those days and easy for me to say. If I can ever be of help please let me know.:animal-pa |
Six of our eight dogs are rescue dogs. It has always appeared to be that they are grateful and so bask in the love and attention...but I always say they give more than they get. |
Thank you from me & Bella! Quote:
I too, checked out your website and was blown away by "Nikki" and if you weren't so far...I'd apply for her :( Just tonight, I was approved to adopt a Yorkie rescue from a local organization and I can't tell you how excited I am to be able to do this! I'm hoping in the very near future to also join the ranks and be able to commit to fostering future little ones who are in need :) |
Oh how exciting....I love to hear when a foster gets adopted!!! Pics please! |

Carole, YOU are an Angel...Such wonderful, caring people like YOU out there saving the Yorkies of the world!! You Amaze me!!! God Bless YOU!!!  |
Yes, you are amazing! I think you have one of the best Yorkie Rescues! As another rescue person, I know exactly how you feel and we do get burnt out........ not because of the dogs..... because of the lack of caring on the part of the owner. I have all I can do not to scream at those who call wanting to dump a 15 year old dog because the just "can't put up with it anymore!" It's been crazy here with calls, but we haven't actually taken any in this month. As soon as the newness of that Christmas puppy wears off or it gets sick - we'll be getting the calls. Anytime you need to vent...... just email me! I'm a good listener! Trish Yorkierescuecolorado.com |
Where in SJ do you live? Camden County shelter isnt that far from me. And like the others have said Thank you for all you do. I could never do it and much as I would love to :( I dont think I can emotionally handle it. But Im proud to say my Fiance is with the NJ spca and although he isnt doing the rescue work you do hes making a difference in some dogs (and cats) lives. Im just so proud of him |
It always amazes me that yorkies go into rescues..our rescue group in Ontario wont let people with children adopt and by children I mean under 16!!!! I sure know I would have rescued before I ever bought a puppy if the rescue group would have allowed it..good luck finding new homes for these little dears.. Dawn |
Thank you! Bless your heart for all the work you do for those unfortunate little babies! We just applied to adopt from your rescue group (We fell in love with Bobbi....) and we hope that we will be approved SOON!!! |
4 Attachment(s) Rescues are the BEST! Carole...I just adopted Gabby from your rescue. I didn't know you were a member here. Glad to see you here. I just can imagine how hard it is and sometimes the only thing we can do is vent. There is nothing wrong with that...its actually good for you.:) Thank you and Rescue me yorkie for what you do...my girl has brought us so much joy in such short time. She is a little character and we love everything about her. I will attend the get together Sunday...can't wait to meet you. I want to get into fostering but I want to wait until Gabby is settled 100% although if you see her now...you would think she's been here forever but we are still working on some of her little habits. We stopped her little toy obsession already. She's learned how to share. We are so amazed how quickly she learned. BTW here are some pics of our girl Gabby that we rescued from your rescue. 1. Pic of her when we got home from picking her up 2. Pic in front of the tree a few days before Christmas 3. Christmas day with her new toy 4. Another pic on Christmas day with her new toy Take Care...Glorivette |
Hi There~ So glad all is working out. As people know all rescued pups, as do people, has an issue here and there. Gabby is adorable. Looking forward to Sunday and meeting you! Quote:
