Rescue Venting~
 

Well, we're 5 days into the new year and we have already taken in 3 new Yorkies. It's just amazing how it never stops. Christmas week we had Yorkies coming out the wood work to be rescued.

I don't think I will ever understand how people can dump their pet that has lived int heir home for 10-12 years during the holidays and expect us to drop everything and take the poor pup. I am ever astounded at the condition of some of these babies. You expect some of the pups coming from a shelter environment to be a mess but when they come from a home and they are encrusted with feces and are saturated with urine, it still, after 25 years, leaves me bewildered. I can't tell you the toll it has taken on me after all this time and the tireless hours that have been put in from too many rescue groups. It's numbing. In the end when you place that little one in the arms of the new mommy or daddy all the work disappears and the heart is over flowing with joy. Then your on to the next one~

I suppose I needed to vent. This past month in rescue has been especially hard, they call it being "burnt out". I love what I do and I will never stop rescuing pups. It's in my blood but there are those days that you just want to quit.

I'm in a group with the most awesome people. Dedicated, loving ,strong, willing to do what needs to be done for the sake of the little souls that come through our doors. I am grateful.

This is from the heart....THANK YOU for all that you do for the little unwanted yorkies of the world.

I'm sorry that it is getting to you. But you are human and it's got to bring you down from time to time. You obviously care a lot for these little ones and I'm sure you see the worst of the worst. I'm constantly amazed at how many yorkies end up in rescue, and thank God daily for groups like yours who fight the good fight and save so many!

There are lots of us who appreciate what you do!!!

Carol, it is tough and anyone that has done rescue for awhile becomes very jaded about people and their ethical treatment of their dogs. Maybe your post will help people understand why the dogs come first in rescue and why you work so hard to find the perfect home. Most people who put down rescue have never seen what you have seen and will never understand the pain you have seen in these little ones eyes. For some reason you have become a protector of these dogs and you are very much needed.

I think the hardest rescue's for me were also the old dogs (nothing wrong with them) that were dumped at animal control because it was cheaper to put them down there and people were tired of them. My anger at these people has no end. Many old dogs came to live with me to live out their short time on earth because I believe they deserve the dignity of dying in a loving home.

Keep the faith and get a punching bag so you can continue to help as many little ones as possible.

Carole ~ As Judy said, THANK YOU so MUCH for what you do! I wish I had your strength/courage to deal with the heartache and stress. I'm so glad you are there to do the job I just cannot. I'm sure you are suffering burn-out. Is it possible to just take a short break from the work?

How do you take a break when they need you. You can't. I'm only fostering one boy right now although he is like having three.... he will make someone a wonderful companion when he leaves my home. Totally different dog then when he came in 6 weeks ago. Some members have 4 or 5 fosters, so how can I complain....

You can never take a break, just slow down a little. There is ALWAYS something to do whether it's administrative, fostering or transports, vetting surrenders, picking up from the shelters, although I am grateful that is not a big thing here in NJ, phone interviews, arranging-organizing fundraising....it's a job that never ends.

But thank for suggesting to take break. At the most a day.

Prayers for all the babies that need us that they find their way to out safe and loving homes.

Carole--Was checking out your rescue website. You are an angel in disguise here on earth. Wish you were closer to KS and I could offer to re-home one of your senior rescues. I know you, or anyone doing this important work is not looking for praise or renown. But, please, indulge the rest of us when we offer it; because we need to express it. I do honestly understand about commitment to something/one that envelopes your whole life, because you are a love servant to that effort/person. My daughter is multi-challenged, and total care. The same way we Yorkie lovers cannot phathom how someone can just toss away a pet that has been a part of their families for x number of years, I can't understand why I get remarks like: "I just don't know how you've done this for 32 years". Hello?! She's my daughter - I LOVE her! She gives us back so much spiritually, and we've learned how to love through her. But, the physical and emotional stresses do take a toll on these tired aging bodies. So, I find respite where I can, so I can continue - for her. That's all I am suggesting. When we live in a red alert status, where stresses are continuously beyond what the body/mind is built to handle, we need to allow recovery time, to replenish our resources.

I know it must be very frustrating -- you must be a saint. I wish you the best of luck in all of your rescue endeavors.

I have always wanted to get another yorkie. I've been looking on the rescue sites for Years...recently I've been thinking of becoming a foster mom and have put out feelers to some of the rescues in the DC area. I would like to see how Kobe (7 yrs) interacts with other yorkies.

I highly respect what you guys do for the rescues, and yes it is so sad how some one could just get rid of their yorkie after 10+ years.

Would you mid PMing me and giving me a "day in the life" of a rescuer.

I can totally understand your frustration....I actually cringe at this time of year when I hear people are getting puppies for Christmas...these are the dogs that you and I will be rescuing and fostering 6 months from now.

It is hard not to get burnt out and jaded when you hear all the lame excuses people throw at you. To them, the dogs are disposable.

People will say to me how can you stand to rescue and foster these dogs and my answer is "How Can I Not"?

Having been involved with rescues for 4 years, I have kind of backed off from the admin end of it cause I tend to lose patience with people after listening to the various excuses....so for now I just foster. I'm in upstate NY and like NJ, we don't see many rescue yorkies here. Most of mine have come from Missouri, Texas and Florida.

Thank goodness for devoted rescue orgs.! Otherwise I would of never known the pure joy and happiness Chip has brought into my life.
