flea/tick preventative question I need to get Chip some more flea/tick stuff for next month because he is due for more on the 21 of June and we started using Frontline. Obviously, I don't want him getting any ticks and we do take him outside a whole lot. Ticks have actually been really bad this year already and he even had one on him in March! Frontline also, is a bit expensive. $60 for 3 months! My question is, would it be bad to use a flea/tick collar or flea/tick spray when he goes outside? I also just got a free sample of Minksheen and it says it has repellant in it... does it actually work? Or should I just stick with Frontline? The problem is, it seems vets push and push for Frontline and Advantix, but don't teach you about other options for our dogs, so I'm clueless as to what I should do. |

I know you can get Frontline on e-bay for much less than vets charge. I have heard flea collars don't really work and I had a horrible experience with one getting stuck in a dogs mouth and made her sick. Also, some on line stores charge less for Frontline. Vets charge so much - makes me mad! |
What about sprays and Minksheen? The only thing I don't like about Frontline is that it doesn't ward away fleas/ticks, it kills them 24 to 48 hours after the tick is attached... at that point, Chip could already get lymes! |

I wouldn't be without it. It is my understanding that ticks are very bad this year. Buddy was just at the vet and he tested positive for another tick desease that seems to be around this year. He is on Frontline also. 21 days of antibiotics. I would never use the spray, heard horror stories about it. When we purchase a pet we have to think of the expense that goes along with it. Get the frontline and be safe. Frontline also does not cover every tick. We can only do the best we can to prevent them from getting sick. |
You should call around your area to pet stores, and other vets. My vet wanted charge $50.00 for a three month supply (times two that adds up!) So I decided to search for the best price. I found a local vet who was selling it for $35.00 for a three month supply, so I saved $30.00 for three months. |
Putting cost aside, this is how I feel about vets and flea/tick preventative. I don't feel educated enough by the vets to make a decision on what is best to use on Chip. They basically gave me two options: Advantix and Frontline. Period. Almost like those two were the only two products on the planet. I can't use Advantix, I have a cat and I'm not happy with Frontline because I'd rather prevent the ticks from biting in the first place. I don't want to wait for the product to kill it after, when he could even have already gotten lymes. Up until about a couple weeks ago, I didn't even know that you could buy the stuff over the counter. I thought the only place you could buy it was through the vet. I've heard a lot about Revolution. Does anyone use that? I also looked on ebay and found something called Biospot. |
Revolution is good :) It worked for my yorkie really well. I have never saw a tick or flea on him since we started it. There are many natural ways to deter fleas though. That being said though, do a google search for Natural flea and tick prevention. See what you come up with :) I don't like the idea of putting chemicals on dogs that are not safe for humans to touch, and the fact that the boxes say that if it comes in contact with our skin, to immediately wash it off...That can't possibly be good for them. But Revolution is supposed to be one of the "safer" ones...It's for heartworm, ticks, fleas, etc. |
i use frontline right now, but i have been studying how to use other remedies that dont contain tons of pollutants etc. at the moment i split the frontline dose in half, bc it is up to 22 pounds, and bella is only 4.5. that save moneys. i just dont like it bc it doesnt repel them, plus i am loading her body with disgusting chemicals. i will find a post where we talked about the different things to do and post it.... |
whats the difference between revolution and frontline? |
I use Revolution which doesn't have as much tick prevention as Frontline, but Frontline didn't work AT ALL for us. But luckily the Revolution now comes with a free Preventick Tick Collar that is supposed to be very safe and do the best job at warding off ticks. The collar lasts for 3 months. |

i personally would NEVER use any flea collar there just not safe www.drfostersmith.com has cheap flea & tick stuff we use frontline plus |
please do not use Biospot or anything made my hertz. They are terrible products and make a lot of pets sick. Revolution is good and its also a heart worm preventative. However, studies have shown that its tick preventative isn't up to par with Frontline plus. Also please do not use flea collars or sprays on these little guys. The collars can get snagged on things and can also end up in their mouths. Plus since we're always picking up our babies and kissing on them you can get the flea stuff on your hands and in your mouth if your not careful. plus it smells funny. Frontline really is the best thing to use. And i use the whole vial on morgan in the small weight range. Its not going to harm them. you can get it cheaper at pet stores and online now. $60 for three months is just waayyy to much. |

I use Revolution, its an all in one things. I ordered my last shipment from Dr. Foster and Smith, and I got a 6 month supply for around 55.00!! Not that bad, when I go to the vet and pay 20.00 for one dose... |
I think I decided what to do. I'm still going to use the frontline, but I'm going to split into two doses and I'm going to buy it off of Ebay because it's cheaper. Because frontline is good to kill the fleas/ticks AFTER they bite, I'm going to get an all natural flea/tick spray to put on him before he goes outside. I'm not going to spray it directly on him either... I'm going to spray it on my hands then rub it on him. In addition, I'm going to use Minksheen pet shampoo because it has some sort of citronella in it to repel critters away. |

Please don't use Bio Spot!!! Mine had bad reactions to it. One of them itched like crazy for about 3 days, another for two days and the third one lost hair, got open sores and had to be on meds and the vet put steroid cream on the sores and she also didn't eat well (my dog, not the vet!) I contacted the company and all they say is they are sorry and to report it to the poison control or somewhrere, which I did. I tried calling a couple of times but only got recordings... On the packaging, it states that those are possible reactions, but I never expected it to be so bad or expensive... $85.00 to the vet. |

My two cents on flea collars. I put one on Tinka last summer and while I was in the next room, she got the collar stuck in her mouth. I finally got it cut off and she was shaking for over an hour and foaming at the mouth. It was terrible. I have used collars before but I NEVER will again. :thumbdown It was so bad seeing her like that. I was getting ready to take her to the vet when she finally settled down. Poor baby.:( |

I don't use any of the chemical things. I actually just give them a single pill of brewers yeast with garlic every day and (knock on wood) I haven't had a problem as yet. |

flea and tick control Hi, Please do not put a flea collar on your dog. The chemicals that are on it are the chemicals used in nerve gas. The chemicals attack the pests nerve system and thats how they die. Your dog will also absorb the chemicals and could suffer from damage to his nervous system. Please go to earthanimals.com they sell an all natural flea, tick, and mosquito control that you put on their food. It will not harm him. I have personally been using Revolution on my 16 dogs. I have just ordered the internal powder for all my dogs. I live in Florida and we have our fleas, ticks and mosquitos year round. I only hope that I didn't do too much damage from the revolution. They also sell a book called The Goldsteins' Wellness and Longevity Program, buy it! It will answer alot of questions. There is also another book The Nature of Animal Healing. written by Martin Goldsteins. They are brothers and both Holistic Vets. Good Luck and do your best for your babies. |
Last week my neighbors boxer was acting very weird, he was running around like he couldn't see and he looked funny in his eyes. We noticed he had a flea collar on and he has never wore one before. We took the collar off him. He is fine now but I think that the flea collar caused that reaction. It was really hot out and I think that his sweat glands absorbed too much of the toxic chemicals. My dad always told me to never put a flea collar on my dogs. I seen first hand what they can do last week and I would never put one on my little babies. Can you imagine what that could have done to our little yorkies if it caused that reaction in the big boxer. |
I use advantage on Cuddles, and I have never seen a flea/tick on her. She is 15 months old, and never had fleas. Seems to work well. Blessings |
Flea prevention I live in FL, fleas are a problem. Tricksie rarely goes outside because she wants to eat lizards or anything that moves. I tried Advantage and she had fleas, switched to Frontline and still find one or two once in a while. My husband brought home an Australian Sheppard that was in the garage for a while until I found fleas, bought Raid flea bombs and after 3 treatments they were gone, needless to say, that dog is in a dog house outside, only at night, she goes to work with my husband every day. Also, Raid flea killer plus spray for carpets and furniture, in a purple can, works wonderful. Luckily most of my home is tiled. It is safe for kids and pets but I always let the area dry out for several hours before entering. |
We have Dudley on Frontline and it is $15.41 with tax a month. It helps, he had a couple of ticks on him but they were dead quick. We have seen no fleas on him at all. Good luck. Chip must be puppy pad trained since you said you don't take him out much? |
I worked for a vet for 8 years & have always used Frontline & have never seen any fleas the whole time. Ticks will still attach, but will soon die. Flea collars are not that effective overall, just around the head/neck area. Be sure to pull ticks straight out with tweezers to prevent the head from breaking off. I would stay with Frontline. It is a bit expensive, but it works real well. Hope this was helpful. |
I use Revolution and have never had a problem ... try deadfleaz.com, their prices are pretty good. $97.00 for 12 months supply. |
