flea/tick preventative question I need to get Chip some more flea/tick stuff for next month because he is due for more on the 21 of June and we started using Frontline. Obviously, I don't want him getting any ticks and we do take him outside a whole lot. Ticks have actually been really bad this year already and he even had one on him in March! Frontline also, is a bit expensive. $60 for 3 months! My question is, would it be bad to use a flea/tick collar or flea/tick spray when he goes outside? I also just got a free sample of Minksheen and it says it has repellant in it... does it actually work? Or should I just stick with Frontline? The problem is, it seems vets push and push for Frontline and Advantix, but don't teach you about other options for our dogs, so I'm clueless as to what I should do. |

What about sprays and Minksheen? The only thing I don't like about Frontline is that it doesn't ward away fleas/ticks, it kills them 24 to 48 hours after the tick is attached... at that point, Chip could already get lymes! |

You should call around your area to pet stores, and other vets. My vet wanted charge $50.00 for a three month supply (times two that adds up!) So I decided to search for the best price. I found a local vet who was selling it for $35.00 for a three month supply, so I saved $30.00 for three months. |
Putting cost aside, this is how I feel about vets and flea/tick preventative. I don't feel educated enough by the vets to make a decision on what is best to use on Chip. They basically gave me two options: Advantix and Frontline. Period. Almost like those two were the only two products on the planet. I can't use Advantix, I have a cat and I'm not happy with Frontline because I'd rather prevent the ticks from biting in the first place. I don't want to wait for the product to kill it after, when he could even have already gotten lymes. Up until about a couple weeks ago, I didn't even know that you could buy the stuff over the counter. I thought the only place you could buy it was through the vet. I've heard a lot about Revolution. Does anyone use that? I also looked on ebay and found something called Biospot. |
Revolution is good :) It worked for my yorkie really well. I have never saw a tick or flea on him since we started it. There are many natural ways to deter fleas though. That being said though, do a google search for Natural flea and tick prevention. See what you come up with :) I don't like the idea of putting chemicals on dogs that are not safe for humans to touch, and the fact that the boxes say that if it comes in contact with our skin, to immediately wash it off...That can't possibly be good for them. But Revolution is supposed to be one of the "safer" ones...It's for heartworm, ticks, fleas, etc. |
i use frontline right now, but i have been studying how to use other remedies that dont contain tons of pollutants etc. at the moment i split the frontline dose in half, bc it is up to 22 pounds, and bella is only 4.5. that save moneys. i just dont like it bc it doesnt repel them, plus i am loading her body with disgusting chemicals. i will find a post where we talked about the different things to do and post it.... |

I use Revolution which doesn't have as much tick prevention as Frontline, but Frontline didn't work AT ALL for us. But luckily the Revolution now comes with a free Preventick Tick Collar that is supposed to be very safe and do the best job at warding off ticks. The collar lasts for 3 months. |

please do not use Biospot or anything made my hertz. They are terrible products and make a lot of pets sick. Revolution is good and its also a heart worm preventative. However, studies have shown that its tick preventative isn't up to par with Frontline plus. Also please do not use flea collars or sprays on these little guys. The collars can get snagged on things and can also end up in their mouths. Plus since we're always picking up our babies and kissing on them you can get the flea stuff on your hands and in your mouth if your not careful. plus it smells funny. Frontline really is the best thing to use. And i use the whole vial on morgan in the small weight range. Its not going to harm them. you can get it cheaper at pet stores and online now. $60 for three months is just waayyy to much. |

I use Revolution, its an all in one things. I ordered my last shipment from Dr. Foster and Smith, and I got a 6 month supply for around 55.00!! Not that bad, when I go to the vet and pay 20.00 for one dose... |
I think I decided what to do. I'm still going to use the frontline, but I'm going to split into two doses and I'm going to buy it off of Ebay because it's cheaper. Because frontline is good to kill the fleas/ticks AFTER they bite, I'm going to get an all natural flea/tick spray to put on him before he goes outside. I'm not going to spray it directly on him either... I'm going to spray it on my hands then rub it on him. In addition, I'm going to use Minksheen pet shampoo because it has some sort of citronella in it to repel critters away. |
