Reviews on Milk Bones? Good afternoon everyone, I have a question for people who have the milk bone treats. Would you recommend them? I have been thinking about buying them, but after all the recalls on treats, I'm not so sure anymore  If you have Milk bones, can you please comment below and tell me what you think of them? Your opinion will be very helpful!:) |
Milk Bones I have used Milk Bones for treats for years with no problems. One of the safer treats I think. Julia |
There are a lot of people who will say they are junk but Callie gets a chewy one every night at bed time. |
I personally wouldn't. Ever since I discovered some Milk Bones have what is simply listed as "meat" as an ingredient, I vowed my girls would never get even another taste of one as a special treat when a well-meaning person offered something up to them. One of my pup's health issues would prohibit it these days anyway, but the bottom line is anything with simply "meat" listed as an ingredient MAY contain euthanized cats and dogs from animal shelters as a protein source. Horrifying doesn't even begin to cover my feelings on this, not a risk I'm personally willing to take. I encourage you to do your own research too. I've pasted an excerpt below from: Where?s the Beef? Why your dog should never eat another Milk-Bone or Beggin Strip, and you should avoid the Slim Jims. | Dirty Popcorn. Quote:
Cocotherapy also makes some good training treats too. I personally like the Fruit Crunch, Veggie Crunch, and Five Star Organic treats (only one calorie each). :) CocoTherapy Fruit Crunch Dog Treats, 100% Fruit Treats for Dogs, Coconut Oil Pet Treats Cocotherapy Veggie Crunch Dog Treats Coconut Gingered Pumpkin Five Star Organic Dog Treats by Cocotherapy Coconut Banana Five Star Organic Dog Treats by Cocotherapy. All the Cocotherapy treats are USDA certified organic and people can (and do) eat them too. As far as "dog food" treats, I like the Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Kisses, but these days with the limitations on one of my girls I stick with the fruits and veggies primarily, and I love knowing it is literally human-grade food in there. Even the best pet foods, don't have many ingredients fit for human consumption in them. |
morgan eats yorkie yummies// ordered them from foxy pups |
I love Milk Bones...I get the large ones for all my Yorkies, because I do not want them getting an entire little bone in their mouth/throat. These are known as "cookies" at my house! At bedtime, I holler out, "Who wants a cookie???" and they all run to the pantry door, where I keep the "cookies"!!! I also do all my own dehydrated treats/snacks, and I recently saw on Shark Tank a young man that has started his little dog bisquit business...Ryan's Barkery (www.ryansbarkery.com)....and I ordered some of his home made treats....they are all human grade...you can eat them actually, but they do not have enough sugar in them for MY sweet tooth!!!, but they are great for the dogs and the pups love them....MY problem with them is their size! I am terrified they are too small and pups may get choked on them, so I break them up and hand feed them.....but they taste great and the babies love them!!! But to answer your question, I like Milk Bone Bisquits! |

Eh, Milk Bones don't bother me too much. I mean, they shouldn't be a big part of any dogs diet, so as long as they're just getting a few here and then, I don't see the harm. Moderation -- just like people. Jackson gets a few when he visits my dads house. They also have the 'Healthy Favorites' line now http://www.milkbone.com/products/hea...ithrealchicken |
I don't let my two have these. Why bother when you can give them healthier and safer treats? |
Thank you so much for the reviews reviews! I have read all your replies and I still haven't decided if I should purchase the bones or not:confused: |
I'm not a huge fan of milk bones because they don't do much for them nutritionally, but I will occasionally let them have one. Mine a treat snobs, they prefer my homemade versions to anything store bought. |
Lola gets one a day, I don't worry because she eats plenty of her good dog food and has no stomach problems. She is my first dog ever to eat a milk bone type of product and her teeth are the best of any dog I have had, at almost three she does not have a spec of tartar and I attribute a lot of that to chewing on those type of bones. I do mix up the brands some are the milk bone brand and I have gotten others from Bill Jack as well. |
Coco doesn't get milk bones but on rare occasions. Not that I think they are all bad but because I have found some things that I believe are so much better for her. She gets Wellness Bars that are apple, yogurt and banana and she gets Blue Stix that are lamb and apples, Blue Bars that are blueberry and yogurt and Fruitables Skinny Minis pumpkin and mango flavored. She absolutely loves all of these but her most favorite that she will knock down walls for is the Blue Stix:D |
Nope. Garbage food. Yorkies are small. I only put good food in. Never feed my kids McDonalds for dinner either. I tend to eat well. JMO |
Have you seen the MilkBone Healthy line? It's really no worse than 90% of treats out there, including the 'healthy' treats. Chicken, Brown Sugar, Soy Flour, Dried Potato, Rolled Oats, Dried Sweet Potato, Dried Apple, Glycerin, Salt, Natural Flavor, Garlic, Citric Acid (Used as a Preservative), Minerals (Calcium Propionate, Zinc Propionate), Natural Mixed Tocopherols (Used as a Preservative), Rosemary Extract |
I haven't seen the healthy line. I only know about the original. But I usually don't buy snacks they sell in the Supermarket. The snacks I feed are usually real foods. To me its still like eating a lot of cookies. They are processed. I do feed kibble but I mix it with real foods. The kibble is incase I can't feed homemade. IMO with a larger dog it may not be so bad . But for Moki he is 6lb 10oz. I keep him on a diet and weight him twice a week. He will eat all I give him and get really fat if I let him. I make sure he keeps a waist line. Reason why. My friends dog got knee problems from being over weight. Feeding to many snacks isn't good for my small dog. I try not to eat to many processed food also. The more they are processed they worst they are. JMO |
When I read "Milk Bones" I automatically think about the original Wheat Flour, Wheat Bran, Meat and Bone Meal, Milk, Wheat Germ, Beef Fat (preserved with BHA), Salt, Natural Flavor, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Brewers Dried Yeast, Malted Barley Flour, Sodium Metabisulfite (Used as a Preservative), Choline Chloride, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganous Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Niacin Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin " That doesn't look to good. The ingredients posted above don't look as bad. The original just looks like a meat flavored cookie. A lot of cookie for a small dog. I just don't feel the need to give snacks. I feed 3x a day. I weight his daily food. He either gets it in a bowl or needs to work for it @ Tricks. JMO |
I do give Jasper Milk Bones and Pup-Peroni but this article opened my eyes to the ingredients. Why is there garlic and onion in them? These are known to be toxic to dogs.....??? |

I did not see onion...BHA used as preservative is more dangerous, imo. It's in pupperoni: Garlic in pet food | The Honest Kitchen I stopped buying store bought treats a long time ago. I have 2 w/yeast issues & as soon as I stopped treats, they got better. No more brown gunky itchy ears & frito paws. The new & improved 'healthy' milk bones would be a yeasty pup's nightmare treat. |
I bought some of the old mother hubbard milk bones, because Lola is teething and has some retained teeth. The little brat defeats the purpose though, she sucks on them first!! They aren't the best for her, but they keep her busy for awhile and her food is grain free. Whole Wheat Flour, Oatmeal, Wheat Bran, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Chicken, Turmeric, Bone Charcoal, Cane Molasses, Paprika, Paprika Extracts, White Cheddar Cheese, Eggs, Apples, Carrots, Garlic, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (a natural preservative). |
IMO if you are using them for teething and the pup isn't gobbling them down. It wouldn't be that bad. I'm just envisioning the dog taking one and gobbling them down then looking for another . They need to chew....even if its your furniture :( |
My boys eat milk bones. I always have them in the house. I asked the vet years ago about them since I know they are not high quality, but my boys love them and do not even like most other treats, except the REALLY bad ones like Beggin Strips, which I do not buy at all. Anyways, the vet said they are fine as a 1 a day treat. I buy the small ones with the Yorkie on the box actually. I break them in half for my little guy, but they do fine with them. They are 8 years old, Dex has had 1 dental when he was 6, and Fletch has not had a dental yet!!! Can't complain about that! |
I give Rocco the tiny ones for a treat a few times a week - he LOVES them. I compare it to getting Doritos or Twinkies for my kids...a little won't hurt and i don't buy them all the time. Otherwise, he is all healthy, all organic, and some of it he doesn't even like! Such a little stinker. :p |
Logan likes milk bones but they make his poop soft- TMI sorry haha but seriously they affect how he "goes" so I try to keep it to a minimum, but he loves them. He eats good food so I think it's okay once in a while. |
Milk Bones Marosnaks I just looked up the ingredients for these things. We got them for the first time a few weeks ago. They are going in the garbage when I get home from work. INGREDIENTS Wheat Flour, Meat and Bone Meal, Sugar, Dried Poultry By-Products Digest, Cooked Bone Marrow Beef Fat (Preserved with Tocopherols), Salt, Corn Starch, Annatto Color, Red Iron Oxide (Color), Red 40, Sodium Metabisulfite (Used as a Preservative). |
ZoE has an occasional milkbone, but she prefers the marosnacks. But her favorite treat is the soft and chewy buddy biscuit. |

The kind of treats i give my girl would probably be dentasticks or joint health sticks, apart from that i don't really buy treats...I use kibble to feed my girl. The bone sounds okay apart from the onion... Moral of the story- Make your own tasty treats for your pup or if you can't ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS look at the ingredients of any treats. If its a special occasion like christmas i give Rosie some doggy choc drops ( i know, i know not too healthy! But thats xmas..right?) & a pigs ear from my local petshop. So yeah the bone sounds a bit bad if it contains ( if it is a big amount) garlic and onion.. |
