Are rawhides bad? My 8 pound yorkie loves rawhides but I read in many paces that rawhides are bad for small breeds because of many reason. Although my dog never swallows any pieces or anything so is it still bad for him to chew them? We only give him rawhides for him to chew on it so is there alternatives for rawhides that are safe for small breeds? |

Just about anybody's dog never choked on rawhide until the one time they do, or they swallow a chunk that may go unnoticed, until it creates a blockage in the dog's intestines, or they can have unexplained recurring tummy upsets from the bacteria that grows on a wet piece of rawhide. |
We just experienced the tummy infection due to rawhide. Not Fun and not sure what we are going to do,all of my dogs love chewing. |

Rawhides are bad they cause blockages and choking. And also some dogs have digestive irratation from them. There are many things out there that dogs can chew. For example a kong. You can fill them with peanut butter, 1/2 plain yogurt and 1/2 pumpkin and freeze them. |
Rawhide's are terribly dangerous and will cause blockages and are not digestible. Try bully sticks they are 100" digestible. |
Rawhides are nothing more than leather! It is not digestable and if your dogs manages to swallow a piece large enough, it will not be broken down, and could easily end up needing to be surgically removed from the stomach or bowel. If it manages to get lodged in the gut, and is there for several days, you can easily end up with a "dead gut", where the pressure caused in the walls of the intestine, cut off the blood supply to a portion of the gut, and it dies.....and you have a life threatening situation. That is NOT a risk I want to offer my dogs. I just think there are much safer things to satisfy my dogs chewing requirements....even those nasty bully sticks that they adore, can be digested if apiece is chewed up and swallowed. |
Rawhide Chews.. :aimeeyork Hello again, its been a while since we have been on YT..I'm so sorry to hear rawhide chews are so bad..Hollee loves them and demands one when she sits on the couch with me..i have a drawer besides me and she climbs over me to try and get it from the drawer. If she is on the floor she stands on her back legs and tries to open the drawer herself. Her kong disappeared in two ticks when I brought it home and stuffed it. We think our older dachie took it outside somewhere. She doesn't miss a thing. Ave x |

I give mine cooked and sometimes raw soup bones, (no raw for dogs with any tummy/liver issues). Cooked bones are hard and they can break a tooth on them, but I figure that's better than abdominal surgery if the need arises. |

The main risk associated with rawhides is that they can cause a intestinal obstruction. The problem with intestinal obstructions is that they can produce gangrene in the intestines, before you even know that there is a problem. Now any chewing stick can cause a throat obstruction, and you must use supervision, but it's safer to use a chewing stick that's 100% digestible. Ran into something like this sort of trouble with the foster dog I have now. I bought a long thick log type rawhide for my Lilly who can't chew that up, usually just teethes on them and as they start deteriorating I throw them away. Foster dog somehow got it when I wasn't looking and ate the entire thing in a few hours. She now is having trouble pooping anything but diarrhea the past day and has blood streaks in it. The humane society said to just watch her and it should get better in a few days. If not, I'm to bring them a stool sample to be sure it's not something else. They don't want to medicate her unless necessary since she has the 9 nursing babies. Blah on rawhides! |
can you try the chewy sweet potato or chicken jerky treats from blue mountain? I got some that promote joint health. I do sit with her and give her it and hold one end for her but she gets to chew away. Im lucky she is not a big chewer, she has no interest in anything that isnt food related to chew.. |
I bought a bully stick last night for the first time at PetSmart. Our Buddy LOVED it! Chewed on it almost all evening and there's still 90% of it left! |
My girls like chews by Himalayan Chews. They are hard and are make of Yaks milk and smell like cheese. :) The girls love them! I also like like chew by Etta Says! They are very safe and break up into small pieces. |

I have always bought my girls bully's to chew, however my husband decided they needed something else and against my advice gave them rawhide. Maggie is a very aggressive chewer, she chewed off and swallowed some of the rawhide. A couple days later I was bathing and trimming the girls and I noticed something stuck on Maggie's bum. I pulled on it and it just kept coming (out of her bum) a twisted piece of rawhide followed by diarrhea. My poor baby! I was so glad that I had decided to bath them that day. I will never ever ever never give my babies rawhide again. Thank goodness she is alright, no problems, but it could have been much worse. I dont know why they sell something for pets to chew on that has the potential to kill them! Only bully's for chewing here. |

Mine chew on bully sticks, nylone type bones, Kongs, raw bones (I remove the marrow) or splint antlers. Occasionally they will get a pig ear 1 for the 3 yorkies to share and 1 for Buddy the golden. None of mine are aggressive chewers so I am not worried about them harming their teeth on antlers. |
I make homemade Dehyrated meat and fruit for mine, too. |
I've seen several mentions of removing the marrow from bones? Why? I thought it was good for them? |

I admit to being guilty of letting Sam have a rawhide. It's his extra special treat - only when I am brushing him out. It distracts him long enough to protect my fingers from him. He is an anxious chewer. When we are finished with brushing, I take the rawhide away and he gets treats and loving. I cut the soft/wet part of the rawhide in a zip baggie and it goes into the grooming bag until the next brushing. If he just needs something to occupy him and I'm doing something else, he gets a bully. |
