Cooling mats? I ordered these for Uni and Scraps. It is just so hot at the shop I feel bad for them. Uni's panting (she hardly EVER pants so I know she's hot) and Scraps lays on the ground and not in his beds. Cooling Dog Beds: Gel Pet Mat Comfort Cooling Mat I got the Med. Look at how small the small size is!! Any one have any of these? |
How do they work? It sounds interesting. If it works I want one. |
It's some type of gel material that is about 10 degrees less than room temp so when they dog lays on it, it feels cool. You don't have to put it in the fridge or freezer but you can to make it even colder. There are other kinds that you have to soak in water for like 30 mins then take it out and wait another 30. And apparently they are heavy when wet. No thanks. This one there's not water or mess involved. Gel is non toxic so if a dog shreds it, it shouldn't cause any harm. I saw some on fab.com for the Sharper Image ones but I missed the sale. I think I like these better anyway, and then I got to order some Cosequin too. Bc I now shun Entirely Pets. They screwed me so now I say screw them! ETA I guess no one else has no AC except for us huh? :p |
I guess not. :p let me know how you like them. If they're good I'll order one for Kaji an one for me. The ones for the big dogs should be big enough for me right? ;) |
My son would use one during the hottest days of the summer. He had to drive rural areas and couldn't use his car a/c. The mats did work for him for a couple of hours. He had no way of cooling the mat again though, so it wasn't that useful for his needs. If you've a refrig at the shop and can cool down the mats after they've gotten warm, I think they'll work great. Also, it's probably not near has hot in your shop as it was driving around in the 105 degree sun. |
It sure feels like 105 sometimes! Esp with the physical work we do. We have the fams going all day, but it doesn't really do much unless you are right in front of it. Yes we do have a fridge at the shop, with a freezer too, so I think the dogs will like this a lot. I just hope they get here soon. They really seemed pretty miserable today. Good thing Uni is still on her meds so she's not scratching so at least I don't have to keep a shirt on her. Every bit helps I guess. |
While you wait you can put water in old soda bottles, freeze them, wrap in lite fabric like a dish towel and let babies lay close to them. It will help. |
I think these mats would be a "must" for areas affected by power outages due to storms, etc! I know I'm getting a couple for the boys just in case we get a hurricane this summer! |
The small would probably be fine for Tibbe as he would likely only sleep on part of it. Whenever I try to get him to sleep on a heating pad or cooling pack(I have some flat bubble-type ones that I use on my hip), he only puts part of his body on the pad, warm or cool. He won't fully commit his whole body to either! I guess he is like a man cooling himself by sticking one leg out from under the covers! |
I also have a cooling mat for my babies. and they love it!! They go to the side of the stroller it's on and lay on it every time. The one I have cools on the area they are actually laying on....it is something to do with their body weight pressure somehow working with the gel mat to produce a cooling affect.... But, it does work...and I love that there is nothing to do...just put the mat in and go. |

I have the Sharper Image cooling mat. I got it before getting Curri, so we have one small but the girls share a bed anyway, and the small fits perfectly in the bottom of their Zebra bed (Like Uni used to have) |

Great minds....;) I've seen the ones that they make for 'people of a certain age'....:D both for insides of pillows, and large ones to go on the mattress under the sheet, but I don't know of anyone that's used them, so thought I'd just join in on the doggy ones....:D x |
Ohhh Cool! I may have to get a couple!! Thanks!!!! |

I am of the "certain age" but never got hot flashes! I saw the cutest tshirt yesterday .. It said... I am still a hot babe..but now it only comes in flashes! |
My two like to hang out by the neighbors fence, so I put a couple clay tiles for them to stand on. In the house we have porcelian tile throughout so they stretch out on the floors. Maybe a couple of big marble or quartz tiles from the clearance rack at the tile store placed in random places would help? |

They've got the people sized ones on amazon.com I think - under Health and Personal Care - Cooling Mats. I wonder if they do really work, it would be interesting to see?! Sally x |

I saw these on QVC (tv shopping club) and it was for 2 mats for you to sit on. As we boat a lot, I thought this might be good. They do work and work great. :) As and all things, ours, they wound up going to the dogs, literally. lol I gave them up for Maggie May and Hot Rod to use while out on the boat as well as in the house. Maggie is my winter baby, she does notlike to be hot at all and will actually climb out of her bed and lie on the kitchen tile. I have these placed in the sunroom and in the kitchen for them. They love it. |

We need to start a club for "people of a certain age"!! I tried the people- one years ago that you put inside your pillowcase. It didn't work very well for me. Just didn't stay cool long enough and made the pillow heavy. They may have improved them over the last few years, though. I now have a mattress pad that has some kind of gel in it that is advertised to keep you cooler at night. Actually, it really works! When I get too warm in one spot, I shift my legs or body into another cooler spot and it feels SO GOOD! It was about $150. I got it at Denver Mattress when I bought my new mattress last year. When my husband lays on it, he complains because it's too cold for him! If anyone has one that works really well inside the pillowcase, please let me know how the name of it and where to purchase it. I'm one hot mamma! :p:D I think the tile idea for the dogs is a great idea! I notice Betty Boop always laying on our kitchen porcelain tile and the entryway tile. She's just like her mamma (except I don't lay on the tile, at least not yet, anyway :sidesplt:..........OKay, I'm getting a visual here! :sidesplt:) |
2 Attachment(s) ZoE has a gel cooling mat. We used to have a one you filled with water, but that was way too heavy and had to be chilled in the freezer to keep cool....then it sprung a leak  The gel kind is ok...cool to the touch but not cold. I wouldn't say it compares to laying on a marble floor tile, which IMO is much cooler. I've used the gel mat in ZoE's stroller a few times, and somehow it's developed wrinkles in it. I've tried to smooth it out somewhat, but can still feel (& see) the crease of the internal wrinkles. Any ideas how to fix? 1st pic: ZoE on her gel mat 2nd pic: showing the wrinkles |

We are STILL waiting for ours to get here. This weekend was supposed to be hot, but thank goodness it wasn't too bad. They should get here by Monday. Geez I ordered them last Sat or Sun. Didn't think the holiday would slow it down that much! |

ZoE's a big girl...she's 8 1/2lbs and 12 inches tall at the shoulder and 13 inches long on her back. Hope you get yours soon. Did they already send it & provide a tracking number? |
Yes, it should be arriving tomorrow. Uni is average size for a yorkie. Scraps is a small one, but I still thought the small was way too small. It was like 8" wide! Like the size of a letter piece of paper! |

I am going to get me one too!!! I have a Temper-Pedic mattress and OMG! it can get warm during the summer! This may be just what the doctor ordered! Just need to put it under my shoulders, upper back..... |
