Dog Food? Any tips? Hi, we've been feeding our Yorkie (Pebbles) Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Venison, and another flavor but can't think of it right now, but our pet store has a sign that NB is having a shortage. We found out that Pebbles became allergic to chicken so we started feeding her the Venison and now all the bumps went away. What do most of you feed your Yorkie? Pebbles is 11 and weighs about 8lbs. Thanks, PhilW |
Natural Balance is made at Diamond - who just had a lot of recalls. That may be why there is a shortage. If you are looking for simple, limited ingredient foods, look into: California Natural, Canine Caviar, Nature's Variety LID, Acana Singles, etc. :) |
I home cook for Rosie and Mikki. They love it and I can control the ingredients. |
The pet stores around here, PetCo & PetSmart, don't have those brands. Any other ideas? I guess I could just ask the store personnel. |
I use Acana apple and lamb. I also use Royal Canin yorkie for when they seem to tire of one or the other. |
What about Blue Buffalo? They have in their Basics line a salmon and potato formula and a grain-free turkey and potato formula. I didn't see any chicken products in either of those. Toki's not had either of those specifically but has done well on two other Blue buffalo formulas for puppies. BB is sold at both Petsmart and petco. |
We had to switch from Taste of the Wild because of the recall. I found Earthborn Holistics had quite similar ingredients so I wouldn't have much problem switching over 3 dogs so quickly. We do very well on the fish formulas- I feel the fish protein is a little easier to use in older dogs (a 12 yo Wheaten Terrier with lots of allergy issues..) |
Someone posted on here that Blue Buffalo can cause GI upset issues in dogs. I feel your pain about food/chain pet stores. We don't have a lot of options ( save ordering online) here either, and we aren't in BFE. |
I’m feeding Jaxx Purina Puppy Chow with a little Ceasers(puppy) mixed in! He is getting better at eating just nibbles but he does like the Ceasers alot just have to get him use to it before I do a complete change! |
we just changed to fromm.. the "pack" LOVES it!! I also homecook.. so the kibble is in the morning and the homecook is served at the evening meal..it works for us |
Thank you all for your suggestions! |
Mine eat FROMM and all love it. |
From what the people at PetSupermarket told me was that NB was sanitizing their plant(s). Yes their dry foods come from Diamond and that scares me to no end. I was feeding the gang Potatoe and Duck small kibble which was not on the recalls this time but am looking at other names. The search goes on. |
Im feeding my 12 week old baby Royal Canin #29 Yorkie Puppy. It's a great kibble and Rosy loves it! ;) |
Royal canin would be a good choice for yorkie |

I home cook but leave dry out. Mine have done fine on BB as well. I do use the BB Basics small breed turkey and potatoes. It has worked well for us. |
I am feeding Gracie two different commercial frozen raw foods. Primal and Stella and Chewy's. If the chicken or any meat source is taken from the typical stock then it has been injected with antibiotics, hormones and steroids over the lifetime of the animal. Chicken in particular is loaded with antibiotics that pets react to. I would look for a brand that uses grass fed animals that are not injected with any of the above. This site is good for finding healthy brands of food though you may be able to find them at a good pet food store near you. Natural Dog Food at Only Natural Pet Store |
pulsar Any one tried Pulsar? It's awesome! It's only in Canada right now. ingredient list you can actually understand. My Maggie is sensitive and Pulsar has been awsome. Royal Canine in my opinion is mid value food. We used it for a few years but ended up switching to Blue and health was a lot better and they didn't need to eat as much. Pulsar has been our staple and we love it - just what I have found |
I feed my guys two types of Dry. Beneful (which they generally eat in the mornings), and Wellness S5 (which they eat in the evenings. Both are out 24/7. I also may have as many as 6-8 types of Treats, and (Cow) Bones are frequently offered. I sincerely believe that exercise is very important, in fictionalizing their digestive systems. I can see a respectable difference in their energy levels from summer to winter. AND their poops look a lot better, when the weather is nice, and we Jog and go hunting along the Bayou more frequently. I allow them to ear Raw, but, insist on them catching it themselves. (frogs/snakes/an occasional bird) |
^ is there a reason you feed Beneful and Wellness? It's just... an odd mix. Did not know what the reason was. |
I feed BARF We love Stella & Chewy's patties. We still suppliment a little Taste of the Wild in Roasted Wetlands Foul. |

I explained BARF is a type of diet meaning bones and raw food... he said, oh that's how my parents fed dogs on the ranch before they made dog food...then he chastized me over gettibg my parent to buy noncorn based kibble (they feed BB wilderbess now) abd then he said, don't be so cheap go to the pet boutique...really emphasizing the word boutique Its so nice when someone chastises you with the exact same words you told them. |

I don't feed Jaxson Purina anymore however I see tons of "great, natural" dog food on the FDA Recall list. Not knocking any brands but I believe unless you're home cooking & controlling the ingredients that goes into your dogs food there will always be something. |

As I have said before I NO LONGER FEED MY YORKIE PURINA! I'm just saying that a lot of these so called great, healthy brands preached about on here have tons of recalls on the FDA list as well. Like I said before twice now I do not feed Jaxson Purina any longer after further research on the brand but as I was doing my research lots of these so called healthy brands are on that list as well. Unless you are boiling chicken and making it home made I don't think you really know what's going on in these factories or going into the food 100%. Heck if you eat out(fast food) your probably putting worse things into your body vs. Purina in my opinion. My pet is healthy & I come on here to seek advice when I need it & give my opinion when I feel like giving it but I will not keeping getting told DON'T FEED YOUR DOG this or that when half the foods recommended on this site are on that recall list for whatever reason. We all love our pets that's for sure but I just can't stand how when someone says one thing & at the time they didn't know any better it's all out war on this site. |
There are some very good small dog food companies that do not have food recalls. Many of the so called quality foods have been bought up by the bigger companies and their quality is not so good anymore. The pet food companies are "self regulating." Meaning they do pretty much what they want to. A responsible pet owner needs to do a lot of research into the company they choose to buy their pet food from. What are the protein sources? Are they grass fed free range animals or are they the typical chemically injected animals on the market? Are they using the left over parts of the animal or are they using the better cuts of meat? It can make a huge difference in the health of your pet. Are the fruits and vegetables organic or are they the typical genetically engineered kind that are mass marketed? There are huge differences in quality and it takes a while to be able to distinguish a company that is simply putting out cheap ingredients for mass marketing and one that really cares about the product they are producing. |
