Shampoo?
 

I need help with this one! I have purchased three different products that seem to dry Dexter's hair or make it difficult to brush through tangles. What products would you recommend? I have yet to find a detangler unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

Which products would be best to make his hair soft, shiny, and manageable?

We use Yorkie splash and shine and love it!! It leaves my babies hair soft and shiny. The detangler makes brushing Emme's hair a breeze.

I also use Yorkie Splash and Shine for shampoo and conditioner. The Yorkie Sheen is a great detangler and smell refresher. On my Rosie who has the long silky hair, I also use the PEK conditioner. IV SAN BERNARD PEK CONDITIONER It leaves her hair so soft and smooth that I don't even have to use a detangler. It looks expensive but a little bit goes a long way.

I use Johnson's baby shampoo on my yorkie and his hair is so shiny, fluffy and smells like a baby!

I am currently using Yorkie Splash and Shine!

I use the Yorkie Splash and Shine products and love them. There are other all natural products out there though that do not strip your dog's coat with detergents that most commercial brands have in them. I have heard good things about some of the other products listed here.

Make sure the Ph level in the product you buy is the right level for your dog. Dog's require a different Ph than people do. Human shampoos are too harsh for an animal.

I have tried Isle of Dogs and the Yorkie Splash and Shine. Neither of them impress me too much although the Isle of Dogs Spray in Comb detangler spray seems to work a BIT better.

Zachary matts just from wearing a collar and we had a horrible time getting the tangles out last night after he wore his cute little owl harness all day. I sure wish I could find something that would REALLY work!

It does sound like you need something a little extra for his coat. If you go to the Chris Christensen web site you can see the many products she has for special issues. Her trial packs for $10.00 come in various different combinations of products.

I've tried a bunch of dog shampoos over the years... for our (very fluffy) American Eskimo we finally narrowed it down to Paul Mitchell's John Paul "Super Bright" Shampoo and the John Paul spray version of the Oatmeal Conditioner...BUT...an Eskie needs to be bathed only every few MONTHS... very different from a Yorkie, who needs more frequent washes.

When Logan the Yorkie came along a few months ago, I did my research (here) and ordered a few different products to try.

About a month ago... I had Logan in the tub and then realized at the LAST minute that I didn't have any of his shampoos handy! But his big brother's "Super Bright" was right there... and I thought... hmmm...does a Yorkie need to be whitened? ;)

I know "whitening" shampoos don't really bleach the fur- they just have a blueing agent that makes their fur "look" brighter. So... I figured... what the heck? I'll try it.

HE GLOWS!!!!!!!! I swear, his fur is so gleaming and shiny, you can see him in the DARK!

I always condition him with Frederic Fekkai Shea Butter Conditioning Masque (another experiment gone VERY right!) so that makes him SUPER easy to brush (and he smells delicious!) and even though it's not a "dog" product, I've told every dog person that I know how amazing it is.

At the end of the day, though... every furbaby is SO different, and their grooming needs will change (with the seasons, changes in activity level, changes in diet, changes in attitude, etc.) so you have to find the best fit for YOU and your baby.

I actually have a friend who has a pitbull that she bathes with Chanel No. 5 shower gel... makes me itch just thinking about it, but the dog looks (and smells) like a diva!

Thanks, just ordered a trial pack for $10 and get a free sample too. I already have a huge amount of Yorkie Splash of Shine and Isle of Dogs. I know I will use them all but I would rather find something I am really pleased with and use only that. I can always use the other products on my other dogs, particularily my 2 Japanese Chins that also have long flowing coats (that don't matt by the way).

We currently use the Chris Christensen day to day and love it. We use the ice on ice detangler as well. Love it too!

I understand how great a whitening or brightening shampoo would make the coat look but I would be very careful about using human products on a pet. The Ph is off and Paul Mitchel as well as most brands use plenty of chemicals in their products and then add "conditioners" to try to cover the effects.
Chris Christensen, mentioned above, sells some brightening products for dogs that are highly acclaimed. Her products are mostly made for people who show their dogs but many pet owners use them as well. I'll be honest, I haven't used her products but know people who do and the results are well above average. The YSS products have been great for Gracie and I prefer to stay with an all natural product. If she had a problem coat or skin problem I would not hesitate to try CC.

I have also used baby shampoo at the suggestion of 2 different veterinarians. Right now I am alternating baby shampoo, biogroom oatmeal and yorkie splash and shine.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I think this might be why he tends to scratch sometimes and I can never find anything on him. He doesn't have fleas or anything. Maybe his skin is dry from these products I've used. I'll look into some of these here.

I have tried several different shampoo and conditioners...l ALWAYS end up going back to pet silk products....it makes them very soft, shiny and the smell good for quite a while.

Hi, I had the same problem when my girl was new, her hair is soft and was tangling. I tried few and stuck with ECO POUCH 2+1. Some other products dried her skin and she even got some rash from some. The tri-collored yorkies have softer that the regular yorkie hair and I found this one to be very suitable for her. Home this helps.

and I LOVE IT!! I use all 4 products (the 3 in the package and the spray in leave on conditioner, Ice on Ice) and his fur is sooooooo soft. AND, he isn't tangling nearly as bad as he was before.

Now to figure out what to do with all the other shampoo's I have that I probably won't use. I could always list them and sell them I guess.

What did you think of the Thick n Thicker? Did it really make a difference? I was kind of wondering about that one.

I think I might try this! Does they smell good for awhile after using?

Most of the manufacturers have a three step process, shampoo, conditioner and spray in detangler. This is the only vendor to my knowledge that has four steps.

Is this fourth step, the Thick n Thicker, what makes the difference? I really have no idea. All I know is that I am so very pleased with the results of using the four products. When I gave Zachary his nightly brushing tonight, the comb went through his hair so easily (he was bathed yesterday). I have never had these results with Isle of Dogs or Yorkie Splash & Shine.

Unfortunately, I don't think the yummy smell was as strong or lasted as long as with the other products I have used. I do have three spray bottles of doggie perfume though that I enjoy using so I don't miss not having the shampoo/conditioner smell too much. The results I got from using the products was worth not having the smell.

It IS possible that you are not rinsing enough. I read that when you think you got all the stuff out, rinse another two minutes. It is hard to tell if you got it all out just by the feel of the hair. I have started to dry Zachary and then rinse him again more than once.

I really feel the result you get with their fur is more important than how they smell. You can always use a spray product if scent is important to you.
I bought this for rinsing Gracie. It works great. Has 3 speeds. It has cut our bath time in half. It gets right down to the skin level to rinse.

The attachment to the faucet is actually much more secure than it appears in the photo. My girl actually enjoys bath time now.

I just wanted to add that your pup's age, hair type, and length of hair will have a lot to do with the shampoo/conditioner that will work best for you.

What I used on mine when they were puppies differs a great deal from what I've used in the last few years. A puppy's coat can be a nightmare - especially if they have a cotton coat! lol!

Max is very light and needs some sun protection in his. His hair is longer so I need a conditioner.

Mia has a cotton coat and a dry scalp so she needs medicated or oatmeal shampoo. I keep her cut short but I still need a light conditioner on it.

Moe has dry, thin hair, and allergies. I have to use medicated shampoo on him and very little or prescribed conditioner.

I use baby shampoo for their faces - only.

A good brush and steel comb make a huge difference too. :thumbup:

I got the Spectrum 10 four step package, the $10 trial kit. I just ordered the 16 oz bottles of all four products.

I don't know if it was the volumizing 2nd product that made the difference but I encountered NO mats today when I brushed him today!
