Best eye drop to reduce dog's tears? as title.. |
Eye drops are not what your pup needs. Diet and environmental allergens are the primary contributors to tears. Keep the corners of the eyes clean and dry so as not to promote yeast growth. |
I found when I switched to bottled water, the tears stopped. |
I would not put any drops in my dogs eyes for tears unless they were prescribed by the vet. There are many things to do to help prevent staining, switching diets, changing to bottled water, cleaning and drying the eyes each night with a warm washcloth, using a good face scrub when they are in the tub, etc. |

I also am interested in a clarification on bottled water. What type of diet changes would be suggested? |
I started really to battle tear stains when Taycie turned a year. I tried countless different foods, different products for staining and NOTHING was working. She was also battling other allergy symptoms as well. Finally after discussing everything with my vet we decided to put her on Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato. FINALLY, we are tear stain free. I really believe this food did the trick, I was also at the point that maybe it was just genetics I was battling but now I know it wasn't. Her face looks amazing right now! I have always used bottled water, and I really like the Gerber Water for babies. I buy it at Walmart for 1.00 a gallon. I also have prescribed eye drops that my vet put Taycie on. Because of her allergies, she likes me to put these in her eyes after being outside. I would discuss with your vet your options and his/her recommendations before putting anything in the eyes. I am glad I did! |

Mina is still teething at 9months,on anything that doesn't move fast enough, including the other dogs. One of my poodles is having other issues and therefore suddenly having more red staining. He will be going to the vet next week for bloodwork and xrays, this is a good time to talk with my vet. |

Good to know! I just found on the bottle it says distilled. I really had no idea. I have however been really pleased with it. I have tried other kinds of bottled water, but I think between her food and water, it has helped keep her tear stain free. Her face, looks so great right now, I hate to change a thing. I have read this article as well... I came across it online when I was googling tear stains.. It really is a good one! |

I really think the food has made the biggest difference. I battled tear stains regardless of the water and I tried all different brands along with food in the past.. Once I changed her food is when the miracles started happening! hahahaha! |

Aside from diet and water, their hair can be an issue too. Short hair around the eyes can irritate and cause tears. Either commit to keeping trimmed and away from the eyes, or grow them out and comb them out of the way. I keep trying to grow them out, but groomers kill me every time! Kaji sees a groomer twice, three times a year at most. I can't find one I like. I always ask that they never touch around his eyes and to never cut his muzzle short. I have yet to find one that listens. |
1 Attachment(s) we all talk about tearing but I never see pictures. :) it would be nice if you could share your babies eyes. I took Maya's picture right now. |
2 Attachment(s) Here's what we're currently struggling with. As a note, the hair in the pic is after months of growth. The hair around his eyes just grows so slowly. I pulled the hair forward to make it easier to see. It tends to lie flat, very close to his eye. Often times, I'm pulling the hair out of his eye. Attachment 354120 And this is the result of the eyes being constantly irritated by his hair. Attachment 354121 |

Yes, I did try the topknot gel but even with using teeny tiny amounts I didn't really care for it.. I don't know, just didn't work for me. I groom Taycie myself so she is so used to me messing with her! HA! I bathe weekly and I I trim around her eyes after her bath, along with whatever else she may need a touch up with! I usually cut her every 3 weeks because I love the fresh trimmed look:) Hey, but I am a hairstylist so... she can't have anything but perfect hair right???? LOL! ;) |
