My yorkie has fleas and can't get rid of them
 

My little 5 pound yorkie has fleas and can't get rid of them. We have been given all sorts of shampoo, flea medicine and etc. She is miserable scratching. She only goes outside to do her business. We have treated the house, yard, her and still can't get rid of them.
Please if anybody has any ideas for me and little Katie Jo. I will do anything at this point to help her out.

The bugs are terrible this year and we are fighting too. Did you try Comfortis? It's the only thing that really helps and then you can give her a bit of garlic... Are you sure it's fleas and not some allergies?

Just wondering did you get the flea drops from the vet?
Sometimes you have to go that route . (Harts) imo does not work . Wash whatever you can in hot water . Vacume everything and empty vac or throw away bag right away .Outside garbage . You may have to do this a few times . Good luck let us know how it goes .

I've had best luck with Revolution from my vet. I've never had any luck with grocery/superstore(PetsMart, Petco) brands and some can be toxic. Dawn dish detergent will knock down if not kill fleas on her, and use a sprayer to rinse any out of her coat. The blow dry her to get any hangers-on. You can treat your carpeting with regular table salt, sprinkle liberally and allow to sit overnight then vacuum in the morning. It dehydrates any fleas in the carpeting/furniture. Don't forget to empty the vacuum right afterwards. :D

I just wrote this in another thread but it bears repeating here. I live in Central Texas where it is hot and humid and fleas breed like.......fleas. My Maltese is highly allergic to the bites and it was a huge problem for me UNTIL I discovered Beneficial Nematodes 8 years ago.

Beneficial Nematodes cost about $11 for a 2,000 sq foot outdoor area. You can get them at garden centers and make sure you get the LIVE nematodes. They will come in a little sponge packaged in a little plastic bag. You place the sponge in a gallon of water and after a minute or so squeeze the sponge in the water to release all the tiny nematodes. Then spread them over the outdoor area to be treated using the 4 oz per gallon setting on the hose end sprayer bottle and go back over the area with plain water to rinse them off the blades of grass and into the soil.

This is an organic solution to the worst flea problems and is harmless to pets, plants, and people. The nematodes will not kill adult fleas but rather penetrate larvae (flea, ant, whatever) and eat the larvae, effectively killing out the flea population once the existing adults finish their natural life cycle and die. As long as larvae are in your soil the nematodes thrive. Once the larvae are gone the nematodes food supply is gone and they will die off also. Hence you want to reapply every 6 months. I use Spring and FAll as my treatment times. It will take 2-4 weeks for the BN's to establish but thereafter if you apply every 6 months you won't have a flea problem again.

To treat your interior sprinkle diatomaceous earth (about $8 for a big tub of powser) on carpet, pet bedding, and the pet itself. It is harmless to people and animals but the fleas will eat it and it shreds their innards. It's a bit of a mess but once the adult fleas die and the larvae they created hatch and then die, you're flea free. Providing you did the Beneficial Nematodes treatment outside.

This sounds like a lot of work but the nematodes take about 45 minutes to an hour for the treatment that lasts 6 months. If you have an indoor infestation, that takes longer obviously but this is an almost permanent solution.

I've been using the BN's for 8 years and do not use the topical flea treatments on either furbaby. Occasionally a stray flea appears after being dropped off by a cat or dog trespassing but we never get more than that.

I don't know if you have tried frontline but there are also many herbal remedies you can try as well- sprays that are safe for her- try this link http://www.earthanimal.com/natural-f...-products.html you don't want to overload a baby with toxins. Also you can get a metal comb and have a small cup of rubbing alcohol on the side- comb your baby girl and the fleas usually stick in the comb- when they do kill them in rubbing alcohol and keep combing- if you do this once or twice a day you can usually get them- it's easiest to do it when your baby is sleeping. I grew up in South Florida and this really helped with the fleas- just keep the rubbing alcohol cup far away from your baby girl- good luck!!!

This sounds interesting and promising. I am sure I will be moving to a house soon-ish :p and I will look into treating the backyard this way before moving in. :)

There is something called Flea Free that works AMAZING!!!!!!!! I can get some for you. Its all natural stuff you and I could drink/consume... not that we'd want to ... it smells like pickle juice to me. It works amazing with fleas and ticks.

I would go the cedar oil product route-- WonderCide or Best Yet. I works and is totally non toxic to animals and humans! Its good for hot spots on your dog, too from the flea bites. Worked on my boys' fleas!:)

Comfortis... was a miracle worker for mine!
I live in the hot dusty south and the fleas are having a blast here! I spent hundreds trying to rid the fleas in my yard, house and pups... got comfortis and within a week... no fleas... AHHHHH

you need a prescription from your vet to buy it, but it is worthy.
also , keep a flea collar in your vaccum cleaner bag.

Comfortis is the way to go. I fought fleas on Isabel and Moses all year. Izzy was just chewing herself to pieces. Treated house, yard and gave all 3 dogs Comfortis, along with Frontlineplus and we have been flea free since mid-june. It is absolutely wonderful! I gave them 3 doses of Comfortis, once a month, and will do it again if I need to.

(before I went back to chemicals, I was trying all natural stuff - dawn to wash in, apple cider to rinse with, flea medicines with all natural oils, flea spray same way. The fleas on their body at that moment would be killed, but nothing stopped them from hatching or coming back, so back to chemicals I went and do not regret it a bit).

You should try flea free. I had the same problem especially when I took in two baby kittens. I swear the fleas just wouldn't die. I don't think our landlord treated our yard. So the fleas would die on the animals but would juump right back on when the dogs went outside. I tried frontline, advantage, advantix, all the natural stuff I could find. Then I found comfortis. It was amazing. We moved and my babies got ticks on them so I found flea free and it worked even better than comfortis .. without all the chemicals.

Hi, today I just noticed that there were four adult flea on my dog :(
I did a whole day of cleaning and I haven't really gotten to the store because it was late. I will quickly buy some products to prevent the fleas. Do you know any other products that works? By the way, can I find FLEA FREE at any local stores?

I've heard good things about Capstar tablets that start killing fleas as early as 30 minutes from the moment of ingestion. Might be worth a shot.

I found fleas on Tallulah last week and gave her a bath with Perfect Coat's Flea and Tick soap, treated her with Frontline and we called the Orkin man. I think we caught ours just in time before it could get out of hand, but the dog will be getting flea baths twice a month, Frontline once a month and pest control is coming every other month. If this doesn't work and the problem gets bad, Capstar will be my go-to.

I really hope that each of you check with your vet before trying any of these products on your pups. I'm sorry I just really think vet consultation is very important when it comes to Yorkies and small dogs. Please better to be safe than sorry...

I agree. You need to be checking with your vet for products. We (I work at an animal clinic ) see a lot of bad side affects to over the counter flea meds. We also see lots of fake products from online sellers (including petmeds ). Comfortis Is the best flea product out there for the money. Kills all fleas within 4 hours. Needs to be given with foot to last full month :)

I read the posts about fleas and I wanted to say that I used Revolution this summer on my two Yorkies and never saw a flea or tick. They did not have any reactions to the med. You can put this stuff on and still be able to bathe your dogs. It also is a heartworm med. Check it out with your vet. I ordered my from Petmeds and got it cheaper. You do have to have a vet send in a prescription for this.
I searched and wanted to use something safe for the dogs and had no problems with this.

How long does Revolution take to work...all three have been treated and Raelle is still scratching...any ideas?

I always use it as a preventative and i am flea free. last time we saw a flea it has been over 7 years .
Have you tried the Anti flea Shampoo just to "drop" whatever was already infested?
I would call the contact number and check with them about an already infested dog.

I am having a issues with fleas too! I HATE them! we have 3 furbutts and NEVER in the 7 yrs of having dogs have we had but maybe 3 fleas! seriously! all of a sudden my neighbor gets a yorkie(that he takes to work with him...he's a contractor so his pup is out side all the time) and brings him over here to play with our dogs....their dog ALWAYS has fleas!! well low and behold ours got them...I tried EVERYTHING! as much as I HATE using chemicals on them I had to cave and get something from the vet,,.my vet uses parastar...took a few days to "kick" in but, they aren't scratching anymore...I felt so bad for them! they would whine when they scratched...poor furbabies...probably didn't know what was happening to them! I HOPE 1 application and vacuuming everyday gets rid of them and I don't have to treat them again...good luck with your little one...i'm sure she's uncomfortable

I have been very happy with the results flea control via a monthly pill versus topicals. I've been using the Triflexis pill. I don't even have to use it once a month. Once every two months seems to control them. And I agree, whatever your going to use, make sure your vet recommends it. I was hesitant about the pill, but my vet really recommended it for my dog over topical. I asked a lot of questions too.

Everyone will have their own favorite and opinion. Go whichever route you find works best and your vet agrees is safe for your yorkie.

I used "sargeant's " flea and tick shampoo before and all the live fleas just "droped" during the bath it self. I got it last time i needed it at Family dollar. I was helping a friend with similar problem of yours, her dog came home infested... we used the shampoo , then the revolution.

My vet recommended I use Trifexis now that Bailey is 5mths and over 5lbs. But its over $90 for 6 pk. It also does heartworm and other worms. I have been searching on line for sources and products. I found one company that doesnt req. a RX to be written..cuz you know the vet will be charging for that too (plus I am embarrassed that I have to shop for best prices) is called Pet-rx-meds.com. anyone know if they are authentic and is it safe to buy from them. about $25 cheaper. I am using advantage now and the vet says it doesnt work any more. Anyone else been getting that feedback?
