Microchipping I am thinking about getting my 7month old puppy microchipped. Does anyone have any pros or cons? Which brand did you get? Thanks! |
Something that I have been considering as well... Though it seems that the con's are: if your pup is lost and found by someone, unless they have a reason to take the pup to the vet...it seems useless because thats the only way they can be identified is if the vet scans for the chip. I guess my prior thought of it was that maybe it was some sort of a tracking device to help locate your pet if lost. Im still up in the air on this one... JMO :) |
i did it with my chorkie and will do it when lacey (yorkie) goes in to get fixed. my vet said it kinda hurts them so he like to do it when they have surg. |
Chip Home Again seems to have a good program going on. Its a small chip about the size of a piece of rice that goes between their shoulder blades. He also had it done during a planned surgery. |
I had Madeleine microchipped and I'm glad I did. I see it as one more precaution to help find my baby if she ever got lost. I spend a lot more money on things not as important as my Madeleine so it is worth it to me. |

I can't think of many cons, I had Copper's done when I fist got him, He squeeked when they did it but as far as I could tell it didn't really bother him after that. It was not expensive and the reasurance it provides is priceless. If something happened and he was lost or taken:eek: I would be able to prove that he is mine. Could you imagine knowing where your baby was but not being able to prove he/she belonged to you. Or if some nice person picked them up but when they scanned for a chip there was none to be found so you sweet baby never returns home, it happens, why chance it? |

About a month ago I finally broke down and got my Kobekins micro'd. I was more worried about it (cause they told me how big the needle was), and I put it off several times (after making appointments). My vet said he was a trooper and didn't cry. I am soooooooo glad I had it done (PetSmart Banfield clinic). $20. Best money I ever spent on him for a peace of mind. Get it done. Oh, and my chip is home again. 2 different frequencies. |
Spike got an EIDAP microchip (www.eidap.com) during his neuter surgery. I volunteer at the local humane society and there are so many animals that come in with no means of identifying the owners. Either they have escaped or gotten lost, and now there is no hope of tracking down their homes. There are many options available, and we always recommend using at least two so as to have a backup (microchip, tattoo, tags, etc.). Any responsible pound, vet, or humane society will automatically check for a microchip if they find your dog. Spike also has his city registration tag, which is another form of identification. Here in Edmonton, if City Animal Control finds your dog and he is wearing his tags, they have a "free ride home" program where they bring him home free of charge. It's not the most fun procedure for them to have done, but it only takes a second and it is relatively inexpensive. It can save all kinds of heartache if your dog ever does go missing! |

i microchip the animals at work and Hollie is chipped, she cryed a bit but this girl on work placement held her head and gave her treats and she was fine, she bled a tiny bit but not loads and although it is a very good investment the only downside is that if your dog is stolen/lost then only vets, police and some rescue places have microchip readers but i still think its the best thing ever and would reccomend everyone to have their dogs chipped!! |
Kiwi is microchipped with Home Again and I think it is an important method of identification, but shouldn't be your only one. If your baby ends up needing medical care, or is found by a shelter or rescue group, they should all be able to read the chip. It is just another layer of security in addition to your I.D. tag or tattoo. |
My dogs are microchipped with Home Again and last year it brought my Rosie back to me! You know even if they were stolen there is a possibility that they could get lost from the people that stole them. Then they could be scanned and that would bring them home to you. That chip will never leave them! I am so thankful that I microchipped my dogs.:aimeeyork |
