[News] Britney Spears Angers Humane Society Britney Spears Angers Humane Society Organization Scolds Pop Star For Buying Dog At Pet Store July 16, 2007 (CBS) Poor Britney Spears — she can't even get a new pet without causing controversy. On Friday, the pop star purchased a new pooch at Bel Air Pets in Bel Air's Glen Center. According to reports, Spears picked up the Yorkshire Terrier puppy in a transaction that took a brief 30 minutes. The Humane Society of the United States isn't happy about Spears' apparent power-shopping. "The Humane Society of the United States is extremely concerned not only that the pop star purchased a dog from a pet store, but also that she apparently took very little time to make such a major decision," read a release by The Humane Society sent to The ShowBuzz. "Ms. Spears is setting a damaging example to the public. Most dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills — factory-like facilities, churning out purebred and "designer" puppies in large numbers," said Stephanie Shain, the HSUS director of outreach for companion animals. According to the store's Web site, "All of our babies come from private breeders, locally and out of state (we do not use puppy mills). Our puppies are registered, micro-chipped, and WARRANTIED." The Humane Society acknowledged that most stores claim that they do not get their dogs from puppy mills, and Shain offered to help determine the pup's true origins. "If you send us a copy of your dog’s papers, we'd be happy to look into the situation for you," she said. © MMVII, CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved. |
Poor Britney Spears??? Cut me a break! Doesn't she already have, like, 3 other dogs and 2 TODDLERS? There's a reason why many breeders/shelters won't give puppies to a household like that - they can't handle all of that and the kids can kill/injurer the dog because they don't know any better! This mess of a woman can't even hold herself together and regularly has child protective services at her house checking on her poor parenting skills so I hardly think she can handle a tiny yorkie puppy. Sorry, had to vent. I used to be a fan of hers because I thought her music was fun but she's such a horrific mess that I'm disgusted she has a yorkie. She doesn't deserve the yorkies or those babies. |
she got a tan & white chihuahua in january another chihuahua recently and a yorkie and the others dissapear as she gets them |
I am glad that the Humane Society scolded her. I was upset when I heard she bought her puppy from a pet store. |
t.v. I was watching her. hold the puppy in one hand, a smoke and coffe and walet in the other. great more puppys missing because britney has one..It makeS me mad to. where is the love of the frightened dog with cameras in his face. SHOULD WE SLAM HER WEB SIGHT WITH MORE SCOLDINGS.. SINCE SHES A GREAT YORKIE FAN NOW. CAN SHE HELP US FINF ZEKE??????? |
You all have to remember she pays people to take care of her animals and kids so they will be cared for, I m sure it not like how we take care of our animals but she has people to attend to her stuff. |
to bad ItS really sad she has no one to take care of her jg |
GGRRRRR! That girl angers me...and others like her...She pops into this pet store and 'picks up' a puppy as if she was buying a bag or a pair of shoes! She must wake up one day and think... "I'm bored today...i know...i'll pop to that pet store and pick up a puppy to amuse myself" thats probably about as much thought and preparation she puts into it! It's taking me weeks/months to do the research and prepare for my new baby. Deciding to give a puppy, or any animal for that matter a 'FOREVER HOME' is not to be taken lightly! |
I agree, I got so angry when I saw her juggling that poor little baby with a smoke, a purse and her stupid starbucks cup. She's an idiot, poor little dogs and I feel terrible for her kids as well. |

i didnt read the other post but i truly think the world needs to lay off her so maybe she can get her life back together. every day tons of people buy puppies and i dont see the humane society tracking them down and harrassing them. when i go looking for a puppy i make one stop that probably doesnt last more than 30 minutes and dont I undestand the big deal in the time frame that she took to pick one out. (shoot my husband doesnt want to stay that long at peoples house, especially if he doesnt know them) she may have thought about it for months only she knows. and sometimes that perfect puppy locks eyes withyou and in minutes your a goner. plus doenst she has assistants and nanny's and so forth that can lend a hand when needed... shoot i have 3 yorkies, one 3 year old son and another on the way and i take care of mine fine and dont need anyone to step in and make a opinion on my lifestyle, when HONESTLY know one knows it. People make too many assumptions on people they dont know. I agree Brittany has been in the papers non stop about all this stuff shes going thru, but truth be told, how do you know how you will react in her shoes. she is the same age i am, with 2 kids, an ex-husband, a career, a home, all of that is enough to give anyone break downs, and if she wants a puppy wether she gets it from a breeder or a pet store thats her business, not the whole wide world who is just going to assume the worst anyways. and you cant believe everything that is written about people. i think they deserve there privacy. shoot we dont follow joe smoe to the beach and dinner and shopping why should we be so interested in someone elses life just because they act? Didnt Paris just get one too? why arent they harpin on where she got her yorkie from? I just feel that if they are going to make a big deal about it, then they need to make a big deal about EVERYONE buying the pups from petstores not just brittany Spears. Who only wanted a sweet puppy at home, and who doesnt want a yorkie... if i had her money i would buy any puppy i wanted and it isnt no one business who, where, why, how much..blah blah blah Toodles |
Who Cares????????? Why is it so important to everyone what Brittney Spears is doing. What about Betty blue down the lane who bought a yorkie, yet she has 27 grandchildren. This is the problem. People are so concerned with her because she is in the public eye.. Yeah thats right poor brittney, she can't even go buy a dog without being harassed. Since people have decided to be so concerned with this, why don't we choose to do more in our own neighborhoods where we might be able to make a difference. |
I kind of agree with everyone here. Britney is a very talented and very troubled young woman. She needs some guidance that isn't totally cash driven to help her. On the other hand...she went into a pet store, like almost all of us do, and she saw a darling little YORKIE and wanted it. She's got the money, she's got people to deal with it and even I'm sure, GIVE it to when she gets tired of it. I understand the problem with pet stores and puppy mills, but doesn't that little puppy deserve a good life too? Would you feel vindicated if it was euthanized or given to just anyone who would abuse it? I think that when you are so avid about something, and you've been "into" it for awhile, you know the drawbacks, but there's a LOT Of people out there that have NO IDEA what is going on behind the scenes. When I started out with birds, I had no idea the problem of smuggled parrots or any of that stuff....I bought the bird that I wanted b/c it was what I wanted and the price I could afford. It wasn't until many years later that I realized what a lot of these endangered species go thru and what it meant to be buying a "wild caught" bird....I was not my bird's first owner, however....but I know I gave that bird the best 19 years of it's life, at least if she had to be in captivity. You just do the best you can and sometimes we just don't have all the facts in front of us when our heart says "yes". So please don't be so harsh on her. If you want to diss someone , do it b/c she's got small children that she should be setting an example for, and at this point, she's not doing a very good job of that. I'm sure her animals have a chance to be much more well-adjusted. |

Sadly MANY people don't know that the puppies in most of the shops come from puppymills. If anything she did a great service by buying the puppy. Now many of the articles about petshops and puppymills will make the headlines when before they never would. Just for the record MANY of us try to do a lot in our own communities.. Word of mouth and emails about puppymills can be very informative. But becuase our name isn't Britney or Paris you won't see us on tv getting the word out. |
I don't see why people are judging her because she bought from a pet-store. Yeah I'm a Britney fan, so I'm gonna stand up for her, but even if I wasn't, who is ANYONE to look down on her because of where she got her pup? Does the Humane Society go and scold regular non-celebrities about where they get their animals? To inform is one, but to scold is wrong. There are other animal related problems going on in the country that are worse than where Britney got her dog from. Also, not everyone is aware of what petstores are all about. I won't buy from a petsstore, but I'm not going to judge people who do, inform them yeah, but not judge. How many people on here alone bought from a petstore because they either fell in love with the puppy, or didn't know about puppy mills? Also, so what if she got the pup in 30mins. She obviously decided she was getting a new puppy, otherwise I don't think she would've went to the store. I'm sure that theres TONS of noncelebrities who bought a puppy on spur of the moment. On the video when she got the puppy you could tell she cares for it and it seems like she was already attached, and to me I think that's what matters most. |

I agree! I wonder how we would all feel if our Lives were on the constant blogs of all our wrongs and rights. The one with NO FAULTS should cast stones. |

In my opinion she had problems way before this ever happened. She has 2 or 3 dogs and 2 kids she can barely take care of. I could careless about her. Never really liked her anyway. I am 35 sooo .. LOL I personally think her 15 min of fame were up a long time ago. I had a HUGE problem with the way she was holding the puppy!!!!! Yeah, I think a lot of us are guilty of buying a puppy from a petshop. I did it ONCE 11 years ago.You won't catch me doing it again either. |
my grip is the WAY she was handling the puppy.. I saw another post with a celb today. What I thought is. How can we y.t jam all the celb. fan sites ask them is to expose yorkies being takenand hurt. we could all take a moment to go to there sites could we help our cause?? get the attention of the media. Now that would be good jg |
I am not a fan of BS however it's her money and I would think she could do what she wants with it. As far as the Humane Society, I do support them but instead of getting on BS they should be getting into these stores and finding out where the pups do come from. Not only this store but all of them across the country and then the puppymills and back yard breeders would be stopped! They also need to give stiffer penalities on animal abuse'ers instead of a slap on the wrist which happens much to often on Animal Planet. |

You know people do these things daily! Thankfully she has the money to hire people to care for her dogs and kids! But you guys out there slamming her, she is just a kid herself, God only knows how her life really is! |
You know she is 24 or 25. I don't consider that a kid. That is a person that SHOULD be old enough to know how to act. I was married at 22 and had my first child at 25. I am still married to the same man 13 years later. Someone said she has the money to pay someone to take care of her kids and her dogs. You are right about that she does. That is a good thing because at least they are getting attention from someone. I am not bashing her because she bought a dog from a petshop. I made the same mistake myself. She is old enough to know that you don't carry a small puppy like a handbag. Most celebrities buy small dogs as just another addition to the wardrobe. |
If celebrities will STOP buying from pet stores, that will help (a little) with all the puppy mills.....it is just sad. I have seen her old the little Yorkie (on tv news shows) in one hand while juggling a hand full of other items (cell, drink, wallet) in another.....barely looks like the little Yorkie is safely clutched. A show last night showed her at a beach in her bra and panties and her guard was running w/ her back to the car carrying the little Yorkie in one hand while he was running and blocking the cameras. Poor baby!!! :cry8: |
I cant believe the humane society made her a marter (sp)for this. SOOO many millions of people buy from pet stores and they pick on Brittany? I feel what you all are saying and am not taking up for Brittany in this case. I am just baffled with why the Human Society would even go on record for the press for her when so many other people have done it before her and thas just not right. To me thas just wrong cause they need to make sure the general public know where these pets come from. I didn't know until I looked for my Yorkie. Thas 33 years of ignorance that is not my fault, which could have easily led to a puppymill purchase, especially before the internet came along and if i had enough money. I would have thought the safest thing was a pet store even at 33 years of age.. Now I am 34 and educated i know better. DO more dateline and 20/20 investigations. |
I feel bad that britney is always getting put down... but she does have two children and other dogs that she doesn't seem to care about. I went to one of those petstores in New Port Beach, CA " Fashion Island", the store is called Pets. It was a horrible place! All these puppies were in tiny little glass boxes stacked on eachother. As soon as I saw the yorkie "cage" i started crying... there was 5 puppies crammed into one tiny box... on the floor was a metal grate so their bathroom could drop underneath... I'm glad britney could save one of those puppies, but I hope she takes good care of the yorkie. |
Eh, she buys dogs.... who cares? So do all of us. At least in her case, she has people who take care of her responsibilities for her. Normal people do not. As for the Puppymill idea. I think whats worse than puppy mills are people who get yorkies, lose them, feed them little so they stay small, breed them even though they aren't breeders (but not necessarily "milling" them), and people who cast away their dogs because they "can't" have them. I'm more outraged at people who don't think about long term care and shelter for their dogs!!!!! Don't buy a dog if a: you dont have the funds to keep it healthy, b: don't have your own home, and most importantly c: You don't have the time to invest in training your dog to be a good citizen. So as far as BS supporting mills buy buying from a petshop, lets think about the other people who buy their dogs from friends who just decided to breed. At least, Brit has the money to make sure they are well taken care of. Not that I am justifying her.. Im just miffed about bad dog owners.. and Britney loves her pets and she doesn't take care of them someone more responsible does ( I hope)! |
