[News] Michigan man charged with wringing Yorkie puppy's neck Clinton Twp. man charged with wringing puppy's neck | Freep.com | Detroit Free Press Clinton Twp. man charged with wringing puppy's neck BY CHRISTINA HALL • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • March 31, 2009 A Clinton Township man is accused of fatally injuring a 3-month-old Yorkshire terrier puppy that apparently was trying to protect its female owner from the man’s assault. Omar Lateef Lathon-Bey, 29, was charged with animal torture, a felony punishable by up to four years in prison, Township Police Capt. Richard Maierle said today. Lathon-Bey was released on a $10,000 personal bond after arraignment in 41B District Court in Clinton Township. His preliminary exam is set for April 20. Maierle said police responded to a stabbing at an apartment in the 24000 block of Lotus about 8:30 p.m. Monday. Lathon-Bey and his girlfriend, 26, apparently argued about him talking to another girl online. Lathon-Bey then started choking and punching his girlfriend, the captain said. The approximately 3-pound puppy began nipping at Lathon-Bey’s ankles, Maierle said, and he picked up the dog and severely twisted its neck with his hands. The girlfriend then twice stabbed Lathon-Bey in the right arm with a steak knife, he said. Maierle said Lathon-Bey was treated at Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center. He said the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office has declined to issue a warrant charging the girlfriend with felonious assault. Police took the puppy to Animal Emergency Hospital of Macomb in Clinton Township, where it died about 2 a.m. today, Maierle said. Lathon-Bey told police he fell on the dog, Maierle said. He said police have occasionally had animal abuses cases, but “I’ve never seen anything like this.” Dr. Natalie Dolan, who treated the male puppy, said the dog sustained trauma to its chest but had no broken bones. The puppy died from severe bruises on its lungs — injuries typical when dogs are hit by vehicles. She said bruising of the lungs occurs when there are injuries to the lung tissue and the lungs fill up with blood. Dolan said the puppy went into respiratory arrest; then was euthanized. “We tried,” she said of the efforts to save the puppy. “We treated him with oxygen and IV fluids and sugar and things like that but it was just too severe.” |

People who harm animals are generally seen as diisturbed when they are younger and have some mental problems. Harming animals is really serious. And what he did to the girl...a whole nother can of worms. He deserves time and is a danger to others in general. So disgusting. |
This just breaks my heart :(. That tiny baby trying to protect his Mama, and he's faced w/ a monster. :( :( :( |
Lets all plan a get together and go beat that sicko!! |
:eek: |
:eek::eek: I am speechless..no I am not but you would not want to hear what I could say...anne |
That is close to me also.My thought and prayer go out to that poor girl and her precious baby,whose life was taken so cruely. I hope justice is served:mad:. |
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::(:(:(:(:( That's how I feel about this. And he is out on bond? |
:mad::mad::mad::cry::cry::cry::cry: |
How awful! Poor baby! :cry::cry: How could anyone do that? :cry::cry: |
That is seriously close to where I live too. A 20 minute drive maybe. I am sick. I have to avoid reading these kinds of threads. |
:mad: They should give him the same as he did to the puppy, find the same size difference and have that person do to him what he did to the puppy. You would have a lot less of that going on if people knew the same would happen to them. Good for the girl for stabbing him. :thumbup: |
OMG! How horrible! |
This makes me so sad and angry. I've never been able to understand how people can have so much cruelty in their hearts. This was the act of a very sick man, I hope that he is punished properly. My heart and thoughts go out to this woman and her brave little furbaby. |
i am not saying what happened was right by any means, but I am friends with this person and the news basically f*ed him... it was his dog, not hers and he loved that dog... he did no such thing like choking or twisting the dog. The news mad it look so much worse "puppy dies trying to save mommy" as everyone on the page knows, all little puppies jump around by peoples feet, the dog was not protecting her and it was in the way and was accidentally fell upon. Oh and I like how a man is stabbed, and the dog makes bigger news... thats really messed up... she should be in jail for stabbing him |
Interesting! The puppy should make the news in a bigger way because the pup was an innocent victim, just like innocent children that are caught up in domestic violence. Animals just like children cannot choose whether or not violence takes place in the home or not. They are all victims period!:animal-pa |

Woman also arrested Man accused of strangling, killing fiancée’s puppy Man accused of strangling, killing fiancée’s puppy By Heidi Roman C & G Staff Writer CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Police say a 3-month-old Yorkshire terrier was killed as the result of an argument between a man and his fiancée in their Clinton Township apartment. The man is accused of wringing the puppy’s neck and throwing it on the ground after it tried to protect the woman from his assault March 30. Police have charged 29-year-old Omar Lateef Lathon-Bey with the torture and death of an animal. “He lives on Lotus (in the Newport Apartments) with his fiancée — maybe ex-fiancée now,” Capt. Richard Maierle said. “They had gotten into an argument.” The dispute allegedly began when she caught Lathon-Bey talking to another woman online. An argument broke out, and he began punching and choking her, Maierle said. Police said the woman’s dog tried to come to her aid by nipping at Lathon-Bey’s heels. “He twisted his neck and threw the dog on the ground,” Maierle said. The woman reacted by stabbing him twice in the arm, police said. A 911 call was made to police, who rushed out to the scene at 8:30 p.m. Sgt. Tom Terzo found the puppy and rushed it to an emergency animal hospital on Gratiot, south of Hall Road, for treatment. “They tried to save the dog,” but it died from injuries caused by the strangling at 2 a.m. March 31, Maierle said. Lathon-Bey was arrested and charged with animal torture, a felony. He was arraigned in 41-B District Court in Clinton Township and is free on a $10,000 personal bond. Police also arrested the girlfriend, whose name was not released, but the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office declined to authorize charges against her, Maierle said.
