It's unbelivable what animals can do to other animals. I have a red tail boa that I ususally let lay on my lap when I'm on the computer, but when she see's the dogs she gets very interested in them. It's gotten to the point that if I have her out I lock the dogs out of the room.

This nearly happened to my lil' Abby...she was actually inside the house snoozing on the top of an overstuffed chair that was up against our patio sliding glass door...when all of a sudden, we heard a thunderous crash almost like the glass door broke! A hawk had been spying on my darling from our backyard fence and decided to swoop in for an afternoon snack & ended up only biting glass...yikes!!!

Thank God for the barrier of the sliding glass door or my lil' Abb's could have been gone just like that!

Now...each and every time the :aimeeyork girls :aimeeyork are outside to do their business...they are supervised just in case.

My worst fear!!

When I was in 7th grade, my pet bird (cockateil), escaped out the window, and just as I was running to pick him up, a huge hawk swooped out of the sky and took my bird away! I was so traumatized! I was about 5 feet away. I was so close too!

I am SOO fearful that this will happen to my baby, Lola! Because of that other incident, I am completely overly paranoid about it! I freak out if I see a hawk in the sky and Lola is off leash. The scariest thing, is a lot of times, you can't even see the hawks...they come out of nowhere! I am so glad Lucy escaped, but this just furthers my fears!!

My hubby is a falconer so I know a little about how hawks can be. These yorkies just look like prey. If you ever come across a hawk that swoops at people it could be because it's an imprint and just looks at you like you might be it's food source. If you see them with any kind of band on their feet make sure you report it because it's probably registered and belongs to a linsenced falconer. If you ever experience one that's being a nusense or threat you can probably call your fish and wildlife conservation office to come check it out. In case some of you don't know this, don't ever try to get rid of it yourself because harming one is a federal offense. Since owls and hawks or falcons don't like each other you could keep a statue of an owl and or a hawk in your yard to try to deter them away. Lucky for me hubby hasn't had a falcon since I got Roxie but if he does ever get another one then I'll make sure they never come in contact with one another.

What a really close call. That poor little girl must have been so scared and of course in great pain. Ocassionaly we have an owl perched in a tree out back at night and I'm always very scared it's going to get one of the girls even though we go out with them. Maybe I should put the harness and leash on them at night.

Yorkiedaze, I lost my puppy Chilly two years ago. He was on a leash so that he couldn't get into any trouble. Well, trouble found him. When I went back out to check on him, he was dead, just like that. One eye out, blood coming out of one ear and not another mark that I could find. My husband's deduction: An owl or hawk had tried to carry him off, but couldn't because of the leash; while up in the air the bird dropped him back to the ground. The fall killed him.

So a leash is good, only as long as you're outside with your babies. I'll never make that mistake again. My two year old Loqi has never been out alone. Never! And he never will. Losing Chilly broke me; I don't want anything like that to happen again.

Just be careful, OK?

That is so scary. I'm glad she is ok. We had a hawk swoop down on us while we were walking our babies at the park a couple of weeks ago. It was only a few feet about us. I couldn't believe it. Apparently they aren't even afraid of people.

keep your yorkies close

I know about the owls and hawks they will come down after anything even kittens, glad your yorkie was alright.

Oh man, how horrible. That scares me to death that something like that will happen to SpiceE, don't let him out of my sight.

We purchased a wire mesh covered exercise kennel for Tippy. It should come in handy when the weather is warmer and we want to spend more time outside I can put her in it and do my gardening and not worry about the hawk that we see quite often in our area. But when she is on the leash there is still a chance it could try to carry her off . I try not to let her run very far from me as the hawk came quite close to us one day so close that Tippy stopped and watched it fly above our heads.

Lexismom09 02-21-2009 07:10 AM

We have a cabin up north and several Bald eagles with nearby nests.
I have seen them carrying rather large animals as they fly by.
That was my husbands biggest concern when we bought our Yorkie. That is why we tried to pick one that would get a little larger. Over standard size did not concern us. This will be her first summer at the cabin. We will not leave her outside by herself outside.

:lightbulbYou're right, rknrbn50 (rockin' robin 50?), the mesh covered kennel is a great idea:exclaim: Where can I find one?
Thank you.

The other day when I was driving to the outlet, about 20 minutes from my house, my friend spotted a big owl perched on a tree. My first thought was, I better keep an eye out for these birds of prey when I take my little furbutts out for a walk.

SweetPea53 02-21-2009 06:29 PM

I live in an area with owls, hawks and coyotes....I am always extremely cautious with my lil one...I had a hawk swoop down under my patio cover last summer, luckily my lil one was indoors at the time...but I just know that it had been eyeing her for awhile and must have seen something move in my backyard and was swooping in to make it's catch....so glad that you lil one is alright...

Hello Phylllis from Oklahoma. Yes it is rockin robin 50. We puchased our covered kennel from a website called Pet Street Mall. They have free shipping on orders over $50.00. We got a gold mesh one with a door. My husband put it together in less than an hour. We like the way it looks and it is njust the right size for a yorkie. Hope this helps.:)
