I Did It!!! I switched to the raw food diet a few days ago and it is going well so far. No poo problems or anything. I'm still learning so I am not sure if I'm feeding them enough. I do have a few questions for those of you who feed raw. I am feeding mostly chicken like back, jumbo drum sticks and thighs as well as turkey necks. Should I trim the chunks of fat or feed it as well? Also I got some veal breast, is that ok to feed. Should I also feed yogurt and cottage cheese as well as pureed vegetables and fruits? Also Is it ok to feed something like ground beef in the morn and chicken at night or should I stick to one kind of meat for the whole day? Any input would really help. I just want to make sure I'm doing what is best for them. |
Well congratulations you! Welcome to RAW feeding! :congrats: The only time I take the fat off is when I have a dog who needs to loose some weight or when there seems to be an excessive amount on the rmb. They do need some fat. Yes veal breast is fine to feed. Its up to you really, I do feed live yogurt a couple of times a week because they enjoy it and it is full of good bacteria. I don't generally feed cottage cheese but you can. I give pureed fruit and veg sometimes, once a week usually. None of these things are necessary but won't do them any harm and are good for them in moderation. You don't need to stick to one meat a day if you don't want to. Sometimes I have a day when they eat only one meat. Other days they eat 2 or 3 different ones. |

I think thats the way it always goes, its natural to be scared at first but I bet it was great watching them enjoy all the yummy new foods :) |

Thanks, I really love feeding time now, it's so quiet and peaceful,(except for the chomping on the bones) they really enjoys their meals and they have to take their time now no more wolfing it down with out even tasting it. They seem happier with it and I already notice a lot less poop in the yard. |
So cool! Keep us posted on how it goes - I love hearing of diet changes. I may go raw one day too, once I know Marcel is all settled, digestively that is (ibs/ibd). Congrats! |
Thanks Wyliesmom I was worried at first because my rotti has a sensitive stomach and threw up her dry food until I started her on canidae but I did some research and asked a lot of questions and really felt raw would be best for all 3 of my dogs and so far it's been great. I will keep you posted on the progress. |

Thaks lara, so far Sadie has done very well on it, I've only fed her chicken so far but I will be trying some veal soon, I think if she was going to vomit it would have started by now. Even Teddy seems to love the raw meat, he eats better than he did with the kibble, I have to hold it for him sometimes so he can rip the meat off the bone but I don't mind, he's still really small and he will get the hang of it. |
Yeah he will, its great to hold it for them for a while at first because it helps them to learn how to eat it :) |
raw meat? I was reading this thread on raw diets and I am a bit confused. When you say raw meat like chicken and veal .. you don't cook it - raw out of the package from the butcher shop? Maybe I am misunderstanding. Anna |

I know what you mean I really don't like touching raw meat but I'm getting use to it. As far as the dogs getting sick from it from what I've read dogs aren't affected by salmonella and if you freeze the meat for at least 48 hours prior to feeding it it will kill the neosporum caninum, it's a little scary getting started but now that its been a few days I feel much better about it. There are different opinions about the subject and it's a personal choice. |
