New Mommy! Need Advice - Diarrhea/Dry Heave/Vomit
 

WARNING - Sorry but this is a long one :-)

This is the best site! I am a new mommy: Roxy 7 month girl (3lbs) and T.J. 5 month boy (3 lbs). I LOVE THEM and I don't know what I would ever do without them. I tell them all the time that they are my babies and I love them and that I will always take of them (do you think they know that?)
Well this is what is going on: I have had them since 5/21 (so a month). They are always playful and active and then they of course have their sleep time too. The breeder told me that they eat a little chicken 2x a day (1x first in the AM with .50 cc of honey and the 2x time later in the day/evening) and that they leave Eukanuba dry food and water out all day. GREAT, how easy! Well, I think I was giving them too much chicken (I would slipt a drumbstick between them in the AM and then the PM) b/c they would just pick at the dry food all day (actually it has to be a game, they like to pounch on it, so I would have to sprinkle some on the floor next to their dish). Anyway, 10 days after I got them, T.J. started to get some diarrhea mixed with some mucas (but only later in the day). I thought I was going to die, being a new mom and all I took him to the vet. His poop was negative (and they sent it out to the lab as well). He had no temperature and his behavior was excellent. The vet told me to put him on the ID can food (chicken and rice) that he gave me and he also gave me Flaggl to give him. Over the next 2 weeks, T.J. did get better but every once and a while would have that poop again! I did a check around the house and I saw that he and maybe she was eating the corner of the wall, the foot board molding and the corner cabinets, pretty much anything that was hard and chewable (teething!!!) OH YEA, they BOTH also eat their poop!!!! So, I kinda figured that he is eating something that he should be and therefore is upsetting his stomach and digestion??? Then on 6/11 Roxy didn't want to eat her AM chicken and her back end was making all these funny girgirling noises and then within the hour see pooped that mucus diarrhea and then a little bit later she was ready to eat and she was all better! The day went on fine with both of them. But that happened to Roxy again on 6/15 in the PM. All this while they are both TERRIFIC. They play, fight, run/hide :-) all the normal puppy things (even the poop eating! which I tried the forbid stuff and it worked on and off). So I decided to make some boiled rice to give them with their chicken hoping to make the loose poop go away. So now being that everyone seems good to go it is time for the Booster Shot on 6/17, which went good. Then on 6/19 T.J. did the diarrhea/mucus poop but also was doing this 'gagging' thing only 2x and very mild. A few hours later he threw up some whole rice (very little). Again, I thought I was going to DIE! I took him immediately to the vet with the poop and the throw up! And again, he checked out to be fine! The vet told me to just give them the dry food, that that's all they really need, especially since they seem to have VERY sensitive stomachs and that they will get all the nutrients they need from their own kind of food. He also gave T.J. a shot of something to calm his stomach down. And it did. We went home and both pups slept a bit and then back to normal, playing, fighting, drinking and even eating their own food and a pretty good amount too! They even had a playmate for the day (since it was father's day my parents brought over their 3 1/2 yr old Yorkie girl, and they love her, she isn't sooooo keen on them bothering her, but everyone had a good time). The next morning 6/20 T.J. played on my lap for a few minutes and then got down and went to the corner and did this horrible dry heave thing and then he threw up some yellowish bile spit. Again, I thought I would just DIE (but I didn't) I watched him over the next hour and he was FINE, he even ate 50 pieces of his dry food and was drinking too! I had to leave them to go to work and of course I worried all day. I called the Vet and he said to watch him over the next few days (he said now it sound more like Kennel Cough rather than digestive issues). When I got home they were both fine acting and doing normal things. So now Tuesday 6/21 comes and both pups have very normal AM poop and pee, but I hear than T.J. has that girgirling going on and he doesn't want to eat. He does drink a little. Roxy ate and drink a little too. Today they are going to my friend’s house (I have a dentist appt after work and it would be just too long before I would get home). They pretty much played for a tiny bit and then slept all day. T.J. finally stopped girgirling but then pooped the diarrhea/mucus and then he ate a little chicken but then dry heaved and threw it up. Roxy started to girgirle and she too pooped diarrhea/mucus and then she did the dry heavy but no vomit. As soon as I got there I called the vet but couldn't get an appt. until the AM, so I ran to petsmart and got some nurtical and also some pedialite. I gave them both a little and they were better! I took them home and they were great! They drank a lot and ate a decent amount and then the normal play, chase, fight, etc. I thought they were ok and was probably going to cancel the vet appt., but at 2am I woke up to Roxy dry heaving and vomiting the food she ate that night. So, we went to the vet and he said before we get into the costly blood work and the gastro stuff, lets dry the ID diet again, he told me to really scan the house and make it EXTRA puppy eating/chewing proof and since we have done the stool tests and they have been negative, just a precaution to put them on the Panacur and lets see what happens. That was yesterday 6/22. Well, they ate the ID can food all day and played and drank, etc. I was able to grab all poop before it was too late (except for 1x, I think Roxy got it, it is amazing how the second you leave them alone they do it and eat it). So, I slept in the room with them and didn't hear anyone dry heave or vomit. I did quickly grab poop in the middle of the night, but all seemed ok. This morning they weren't as feisty (although I am under so much stress b/c I am so worried that I could just be imaging that). They both peed and pooped (the poop was log like but very, very soft). And this time they were not so keen on eating the ID can food. They ate a very tiny bit, mostly b/c the were playing with it and then decided to eat it. I gave them a tiny bit of boiled chick which they ate and the nutrical. I put some pedialite in their water and I am now here a work, wishing the hours by so I can get back to them! Has anyone experienced anything like this??? I really hope that nothing is seriously wrong with them. The vet said it is very unusual that both dogs would have the same problems (leaning more towards the fact that they do have sensitive stomach and are probably digesting something they shouldn't). Please can someone easy my nerves??? Anxiety SUCKS...I just love them so much, and I am just so confused! They seem and act and are fine most of the time, these little episodes just sneak in for a few minutes and the they are gone until the next time! Sorry this was so long, I am a new mom and I am sure you all now how that is...But seriously, please someone calm me down (I am starting to get diarrhea b/c I am so worried) :-)

I am so sorry you are having these problems. I really don't have any advice, sorry, but it sounds like you are doing the right thing by keeping in contact with the vet. It sounds like they both have sensitive tummies but to what I can't say. Just keep watching them like the vet said and if they start acting lethargic or otherwise unusual take them back to the vet. Good to hear you are making sure they keep hydrated because all that diarrhea could lead to dehydration. By the way, welcome to Yorkie Talk! I am sure some more experienced members will be along soon to offer their expert advice. Hang in there!

Maybe you should stop them on the chicken....and try just a hard kibble or the canned ID with some rice mixed in... the chicken may be the problem as it seems it is the only factor continous throughout...also..as far as the Eukanuba maybe you should try changing leaving that out to Innova or California natural dog food (it is all natural and NO BYPRODUCTS..like the Eukanuba has)...was there a reason that the breeder had them for so long before you got them?...and have you contacted her about this?..I will keep you guys in my prayers. They are UTD on all shots and heartwork medicine etc... right?

Thanks for responding. I did think about changing the Eukanuba and I do think that I was probably giving them too much chicken (I won't give it them anymore!) And I will take your advice with all natural and NO BYPRODUCTS food. The reason the breeder had kept them was b/c they were actually going to keep Roxy for breeding and it turns out that she is way too tiny. They had a few people interested in her but they didn't feel it was in Roxy's best interest to give her to any of them. Also, they live out in 'god's land' in Maine and they would not ship her because she was too tiny. TJ was approx. 14 weeks when I contacted them to purchase them both (they are 1/2 bother/sister, same Dad but different Mom). Again, they wouldn't ship him either b/c he was a tiny guy as well. So, when I came around they were trilled that they could stay together! The breeder did thorough de-worming and was current on all their shots and they put them on Revolution, which I am continuing as well. I am going to cotact the breeder and ask if they have any suggestions? Thanks Again! I feel a bit better knowing you guys care!

My guess is that that they are getting into something that you are not aware of. Maybe put them on a short leash when you are at home so that they are always by your side so that you can see what they are up to at all times for a few days and see how that goes. When you are not home maybe you can put them in an x-pen. This way they still have a play area but it are confined and they can't get into anything like walls or paper or carpet. You'd be amazed what these little guys can get into when you aren't looking. And the effects can last days sometimes... One time Annie got into the bookcase and tore off the cover on a book. She had the nastiest mucous diarhea for a week. Sometimes she just random vomits (probably cause she ate something she shouldn't have) Plus you have two little puppies ! So that's TWO TIMES THE TROUBLE :D They're probably playing follow the leader!

OH YES, DOUBLE TROUBLE! T.J. is the leader and Roxy follows...even with the poop eating. (I definatley think she started b/c she saw him, gross)

I just can't believe how much I love them, I am so worried but deep down inside I just have this feeling that they are getting into something that they shouldn't and that I probably did over chickened them too and they just have too much of a sensitive stomach for that!

I will take your advice as to when I am home I will keep them very close to me and when I am at work they do stay in a spare room that has been dubbed 'cardboard box' b/c I have made my own x-pen. I will however redo the room by wrapping sheets around the cardboard pieces so they don't start to eat the cardboard and tape. I threw away the newspapers (for potty) and only leave 2 wee wee pads in a corner, but I am going to buy (right now online) the washable wee wee pads as another precaution.

I thought if I could just make it through the diarrhea everything would be ok, but when I saw them dry heave & vomit I cried, I just felt so bad for their little bodies having to go through that. I really hope we can make it through this. B/c like I said earlier the worring is causing me to have diarrhea! Thanks Again.

I wouldn't worry too much about giving them chicken everyday... Whenever Annie has an upset tummy or whatever the vet ALWAYS says boiled chicken and rice.... Also Annie is a finicky eater. I can get her to eat her kibble but I basically have to sit down with her and "spoon" feed it to her... She is getting better where she will eat the first half out of the bowl... But only if I am sitting there next to her :rolleyes: But I work full time. So I don't have time to do this every morning. (I can do it at nite) So in order to make sure that she eats something in the morning I give her some boiled chicken, or chicken deli meat or turkey deli meat. (This she gobbles up and eats on her own :rolleyes: ) She is a year old and we have no problems with this and her tummy. So again I wouldn't worry too much about too much chicken... Just work with trial and error for everything that you do. I've been through the last 10 months of freak out episodes of where Annie has been vomitting or has had really bad diarhea or dry heaving. And it has ALWAYS been cause she got into something she shouldn't have :D I'm not saying this is your case... But sure does sound suspicious :)

I've heard that yogurt is good for them, i feed mine a little yogurt and give them Hills Science Diet dog food. I have 5 yorkies and one expecting and they all are doing great. The yellow throw up is common in dogs occasionaly , i think it is acid. Mine do it about once every 6 months or so, i think mostly after i see them eating grass. My Brittainy used to eat his poop when a puppy and we gave him some kind of pills for it, have to be consistant with the pills and they will quit. He did. Try the science diet small bites and try adding a little science diet canned with it, if you want to really spoil them. I had to quit giving the canned because of mine getting over weight. Hope this is helpful

Yes, very suspicious! I am going to keep a good eye on them! Of course the Vet is just around the corner if needed.

I wanted to say Thanks So Much! It is refreshing to hear some similar episodes. I really do think it is something they are getting into, but when you are not around to see it and being a New Worried Mom you can't help your mind from sometimes worry if they are seriously ill. I guess I will learn as we all grow as a family. I'll let you know what happens over the next week!

Our old puppy bandit ate eukanuba and got kennel cough. we changed his food after he got over it and he hadn't been sick since. it natures balance. also our new puppy tucker has been eating royal canin since he first started eating dry food. we have not had any problems he has not had kennel cough or anything and we've had him for almost 3 weeks. good luck!!!!!!

Welcome to YT! Sorry your babies are sick, hope they are better soon! Tell them that Toto said to stop eating that poop!!! ;)
