Is there a supplement to make the coat grow faster?
 
I've heard about Seameal and missing link, but I'm already giving her a supplement called Juice Plus that is very similar. Her food seems to be low in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids so I'm looking for something that will give her more of those. I looked on some past threads last night. One said you can give olive oil so I gave her some of that this morning until I can find something better (unless that is something I should keep using). I also have a lot of frozen tilapia filets in my freezer so I could actually give her some fish every day. Would that help? If any of you have any suggestions please let me know

Boy, dont I wish!!! I think some supplements like the ones you mentioned are great!!! But, sometimes the genetics arent there for fast coat growth. My Skye Terrier mentor and exhibitor for 30 years says the more you bath and groom, the faster the hair grows. It works for Skyes!!! Seems to be that way with my boys too. Bath, groom, oil, wrap every 5 days. Adjust wraps as needed. Seems like I have had better coats since I switched to Chicken Soup Puppy. Good luck, Lynn

Yeah, Lacy's hair just genetically grows so slow. That's why I was wondering if there is anything that could help even a tiny bit.

I have noticed that when I give Phoebe mising link her hair grows like crazy, so I have to groom her (cut) more often, I haven't give her any since we got Shayna she still a pup, but I really think that genetic, have a big part on it:rolleyes:

Fish oil or flax seed oil are good sources for omega 3 essential fatty acids...A white fish like cod might be good to give once a week. Also, I would supplement Vitamin E along with the fish oil...Many experts suggest that Vit E supplementation along with fish oil is important because they feel the omega-3 are better absorbed that way.
Miko's coat has improved significantly since I started supplementing with Vit E, fish oil, and vitamin b-complex.

I gave her some tilapia tonight. Is that a good fish to give? I saw somewhere that I can get fish oil capsules for people and use half of one a day. Where do I get vitamin E and how much would I give her every day?

Being a vet student you would think it would be in one of your texts... HMMM missing link is all I have heard about that may or may not help that and a healthy dog;) what food do you have her on?

Vet students don't really learn anything about nutrition. That's why vets usually recommend crap like Science Diet. So what I've learned so far has been on my own research. I'm hoping to do an externship with a holistic vet or animal nutritionist sometime so I can learn more about it. She's on a raw diet - Nature's Variety Raw medallions in rabbit and venison. It's a great diet but I just noticed yesterday that the Omega 3 and 6 was a little low so I'm looking to supplement those.

It's probably fine :) I wouldn't know for sure as my dogs don't like fish. I do know that cod is good for them though. You can buy vitamin E at any health food store. Buy the Vitamin E 100IU, and you can give up to half of one per day.
Evening primrose oil is a good source of omega-6 essential fatty acids.

I don't know about giving olive oil? i supplement Charlie with Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil, and have a sample of Nordic Natural Omega-3 Pet soft gel. I corresponded with Nordic Natural and was advised not to give animals human grade fish oils.

Also, Charlie is 10 lbs. and receives 1/4 tsp. once a day of the cod liver oil. Be careful not to give too much or it will upset their tummy.

PS Advised not to supplement his diet with Omega-3 for humans due to the addition of Rosemary oil and citrus/fruit flavorings to their human products.

The human grade fish oil that I buy does not contain any of those things :)

I give salmon oil and vitamin e every other day. With raw its the only things I supplement wiith. It really does help their coat loads :)

oops! I've been giving my pup Science Diet because that's what the breeder said to do. What brand is good?
