Coughing/Choking sound... Very worried!! Hey all! I have a quick question... When Chloey starts playing around she makes this coughing/choking/hacking sound. Nothing comes out of her mouth so I know it's not gagging or anything but this is really worrying me. I checked her collar and it isn't too tight. It's one of those collars that are meant to snap open if she gets caught on anything. I never use her collar to walk her or anything, always the harness. The collar is just there for her tags and her bell so that I can hear where she is at all times. Now I don't know if this is a normal thing and it happens when little dogs get excited or if she has a problem with her trachea :( Any advice would be very welcome :( |
My Gypsy does the same thing and the past two days she has been been making wheezing noises when she does it too.... :( |
Oh god! So worried.... I know it can't be Bordatella because she had those shots already but I really hope it's nothing bad to do with her throat :( |
How old is she? It could be reverse sneeze, all 3 of mine get that. Seems like when they do it comes in spells. If she is real young and may have been exposed to kennel cough I would have the vet see her. The reverse sneeze sound is like they are breathing in thr their nose and not breathing out. I hold my hand over their mouth amd nose for a second and then it forces them to breathe out normally. Hope she is better soon |
Could be some reverse sneezing. Marcel's was worse during allergy season - and lately it seems MUCH better. Pups sometimes outgrow this too. How old is she? |

Would reverse sneezing only happen when they are playing? Or is this something that happens any time? I am concerned about this because my in-laws' beagle makes similar noises sometimes and it turned out his trachea was affected from him pulling on his leash collar when he was a puppy. I don't know how Chloey would have gotten that though since, as I mentioned, she is never on a collar-leash combo, only ever on a harness. :( |
It could be the Trachea issue- Yorkies are prone to collapsing tracheas. I am not an expert but have had yorkies all my life. One of our little guys (my parents' dog Pip) is 15 and going on 15 1/2 years old...he often gets this and can't catch his breath. We've been managing it for awhile now. They also have a 3 year old yorkie who happens to get this when he's on his walk - it can be reduced by using a harness. He just gets excited and his throat becomes constricted and continues to hack...does anyone else experience this or am I the only one that is crazy for thinking this? Hope i could help - MAG |
One other thing I forgot to say- we brought our 1st Yorkie ever- Chips to the vet when he used to cough and hack like that while playing or if he wanted something. The vet said that there was nothing wrong and that it was his way of getting attention. In his case it was not the trachea but definitely turned out to be his way of getting attention! |

Teddi does this....of course never when we are at the Vet's and actually she does it at weird times. Not necessarily when she is excited or playing. The vet told me it was nothing to be concerned with and that it was probably the reverse sneeze. She seems completely healthy so I'm not sure but I figure if the vet wasn't concerned then I shouldn't be. |
My Jennie, who is 14 1/2 also gets these hacking, wheezing sort of coughs. She started 1 1/2 yr ago around spring time. The vet didn't think much of it, put it down to allergies. I thought it would pass when spring was over but it didn't. She has it now and then, and gets worse in spring and when I'm walking her out. In the past I used to get real allarmed because she looked like she had difficulty breathing or a foreign object had got trapped in her nose or mouth. Then I got used to it. When she has it real bad I check her gums to make sure they have a pink colour and therefore is not short of oxigen. Well, I don't know whether this is happening to Jennie because she's old or what, but I believe this is quite typical of yorkies and also heard this tend to happen when they get excited.Other than that, I guess that as long as they are fine, and breathing normally and don't get blue in their gums, I don't think you should worry too much obout it. |
Jewels does that when she gets excited |
Keely does this every once and a while. In fact she just did it last night. It scares me but I just know that its reverse sneezing and the vet said that it happens sometimes. She is just a little over 7 months old. |
Here is some information on collapsing trachea. Not saying that's what it is, just giving some info.http://www.yorkierescue.com/trachea/tracheainfo.html |
Thank you all for your responses! I went to the vet just to make sure she didn't have a cold or anything and told him when it happened. Chloey got a perfect health bill and he said it was something Yorkies were prone to do! He also suggested it might be reverse sneezing but since she wasn't doing it when we were there (obviously  ) he couldn't give me any real diagnostic. Just said there was nothing to be worried about. Phew! I was terrified of it being trachea problems:eek: |

There are many threads on here that has good info on reverse sneezing......... including one with a video. You may want to do some "surfin". ;) |
I know this is an old thread. But glad I read it. Bella did this morning and I was worried that she may have collapsed trachea. She was just seen by the vet and he didn't notice anything. Also it only lasted a few seconds at a time for about a minute. I have some dust in my apartment so it might have been that. She likes to sniff and inhale everything. |
My yorkie is making a funny sound and I am worried. His tongue is pink and he is normal as far as acidity, eating and drinking. He doesn't do it all day just random. Could it be reverse sneezing? Trachea issue? Kennel Cough? |

I just went through this with my little boy, Jasper, last month. He ended up with this honking sound all day so I rushed over to the vet (he too would just cough like crazy sometimes after playing too hard or getting really excited prior to the honking episode). He has been diagnosed with a collapsing trachea. They sent him home with meds (i.e.: anti-inflammatory, cough suppressant, and antibiotic) for about 2 weeks, and has been doing fine since. I bought another bottle of the cough suppressant per her suggestion in case (which I haven't used at all). And she also recommended to not let him wear his collar anymore (which was definitely a big adjustment). Let me know if you have any other questions! :aimeeyork |

I never use the collar with the leash...always a harness. And his collar isn't tight...can get about 3 fingers in while he's wearing it. But I got scared when she told me it could irritate his throat, so I just took it off. :-/ |
Benji Thank you all... I was concerned so we took him to vet and they said he was fine. Lungs sound good no temp. So she said maybe allergies etc |

Coughing and hacking after drinking water or eating can be an indicator, too. Any of that? |
Sneezes & Coughs I enjoyed reading the posts - old and new. Our 2.5 year old yorkie would make all sorts of noise when she was very young and it freaked us out. Sometimes we would pick her up and pat her to reverse the air flow. As she outgrew this she didn't outgrow having learned it got our attention. So, now when she's wanting attention or to play she turns on the hack. If we are outside and she's been running hard she'll still have an occasional sneezy/wheezy deal but since it resolves quickly and her vet checks are good we don't worry at all. Our little girl does not wear a collar. We can't secure it tight enough to not create a different hazard. So her tags are on her puppia harness which she sometimes has to wear for extended periods if we are out and about. She is chipped (although we are assessing if she's got a skin problem related to the chip) but we've heard nightmare stories about different chip readers failing and not finding the info so we don't count on that. If we absolutely have to put a collar on we use a cat breakaway collar for the brief occasion. |
