Hills S/D My Yorkie has struvite crystals and has been put on 3 months of Hills S/D. In three days she is already looking heavier since corn starch is the second ingredient. Is there a better food out there? If I give her an apple slice or carrot, will this mess up the chemistry of what the S/D is doing? She is always famished with this crappy canned dog food. Thank you |

When the vet put her on science diet, did he tell you which ingredient that he was trying to avoid. What were you feeding? I feed Royal Canin Here is a link to their online book on the yorkshire terrier specific food. http://www.royalcanin.us/dogfood/yorkshirebook.html This next link has other links that you can click on for more information. The video is worth watching just to see the yorkies. http://www.royalcanin.us/dogfood/yorkshire.html |
Feeding then, feeding now [QUOTE=JeanieK;1301416]When the vet put her on science diet, did he tell you which ingredient that he was trying to avoid. What were you feeding? Since she has strvite crystals and vaginal infections vet wants her on this S/D crap for three months. We were home feeding her low protein diet with probiotics and veggies because diva is a Liver Shunt survivor. had surgury in '02. The royal canine looks great but the protein content is very very high for liver challenged yorkies. Angel and Diva |
OK I understand. I guess I'd ask the vet why he wants her on that food. What there is or isn't in it that makes it help with they crystals. [QUOTE=adiben;1301501] Quote:

The book i just got is The Complete Holistic Dog Book. I wrote a review on it in the product review section when i look up Struvite Crystals it brings me to struvite stones... so sadly... i'm not sure i'm much help. |
crystals vs stones? Quote:
This book is quite dated, nearly 5 years old. In terms of struvite vs stones, is there a difference? I too keep getting bladder stones when I search google for struvite crystals. stumped :icon5: |

when Ichabob was a dibetic they put him on science diet W/D , like you I was not happy with the food, I did try other brands put ever time I switch him off of the W/D is sugar would go sky high. I eneded up leaving him on it for 2yrs, his sugar stay in the normal range, he did great. he was on Innova before his dibetic problems, but have you notice that when ever a dog has a problems they always put them on S/D. My daughter dog has been on S/D ID his entire life he was a shelter dog with digestion problems She try others food too but they don't seem to help for long he back at the vets . Ichabob passed this past march not from his illiness but from a freak accident. I really don't know about S/D food I jsut know it work for him. My old vet did not sell any food but insisted he be on S/D. It's hard to know the right thing to do. |

I'm sure there is an all natural "real" food diet that is even better that Hill's that will do a better job, but you would have to ask a nutritionist about that or a Holistic Vet. |

adiben, please join the liver shunt and mvd group on yahoo groups: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ There are many, many members on there that have been in this same situation before that will be able to offer help. Also, they have an amazing amount of information in their Files section. There are many liver shunt survivors and dogs with MVD. I'm sure you will be able to find an incredible amount of information on there.... Also, here is a link with some info on Struvite stones that may be helpful: http://www.b-naturals.com/Dec2002.php If you don't want to feed science diet, tell him/her that you would prefer Royal Canin SO13...This food is also specially formulated to dissolve struvite uroliths, and is very low in protein. It's still not a wonderful choice, as natural foods are more than definitely better, but like I said, if you join the liver shunt group, many of the members on there cook for their dogs and many have had or have problems with either struvite or some type of stones... |

My little guy was on Hills SD for a week when we first got him. He was on Nutro Max Puppy, but he wouldn't eat it for the first day or two....but would go to town on my friend's dog's food...which was the Hill SD. I have now switched him to Nutro Ultra for nutritional reasons. Right now I'm doing 1/2 Ultra, 1/2 Hills SD Small Bites.... Check out the Nutro Ultra and read labels! http://www.ultraholistic.com/index.html My little one loves it so far. Even better if I drizzle olive oil over his kibble... Has anyone else tried this? ♥ ang |
