How Do You Get Them To Take Pills?? Luigi has 2 medications for his hookworms. One is in pill form and I give 1/2 a pill a day. It's difficult to get him to take it! I tried stuffing them in treats but he just eats around the pill, takes the treat, and spits the pill out! I tried crushing one and putting the crumbs in Nutrical, and that sorta worked but it was a mess! The pill powder was all over my hand and I don't want to feel like i'm losing medication that he should be taking. Does anyone have any suggestions to make this easier?? Thanks |
..another thought: would crushing the pills in a little container, and then putting some water in it so the pill powder mixes with the water..and sucking it all up into a syringe work? his other medication is liquid, and it's not too hard squirting it into his mouth with the syringe. this is what i sometimes do as a nurse for my patients ;) can it work for puppies? |
I hide pills in cream cheese -- or a bit of butter. I always give one "freebie" piece then the one with the pill and then another "freebie" The key is to feed all three treats very quickly so that the furbutt doesn't realize that something is up. |
Sometimes I put a little peanut butter on a little piece of bread with the pill in the pb or sometimes a little piece of Velveeta cheese. Good luck, Patty |
cream cheese works great. as does peanut butter. I don't like crushing pills and putting it in water because i don't think it gets absorbed properly. If all else fails open his mouth, use your finger to push the pill all the way towards the back of the throat and then close his mouth. massage his throat until he swallows. Or after putting the pill in his mouth squirt some water with a syringe in his mouth making him swallow. |

And "Furbutt" makes me laugh :D I was saying out loud, "You butt!!!" whenever he kept spittin the pill out. |
Sadie eats a canned food & gobbles it up, so I can hide it in her food & she never knows it's there. Side note: every time I see your name, I think my Mom has joined YT...that's her name too! (first AND middle) |
I try hiding it in their food. I have a real problem with Maya as she needs a very toxic pill every 4 days for her Cushing's disease and I have to make absolute certain she takes it and doesn't spit it out because if the other 2 were to get it it could be very dangerous to them. The problem I have is Maya is aggressive when I try to give her something she doesn't want so if she doesn't eat it there's nothing I can do. I am going to try the peanut butter. Ice cream has worked before but it upsets her tummy. |

And WOW, I've never heard of another Pamela Kay. That's awesome. Do you know where they got the idea to name your mom that? |

I don't know how my granmother came up with it...I"ll have to ask her. I think she just always liked the name Pamela. But I don't know about the Kay part. |
Try liverwurst, make sure it does not have onion in it on the ingredients (one brand does) i have never had a dog find it in the liverwurst and they never refuse it. |
honestly and this is not cruel lol i just easily stick it to the very back of skoshis mouth and he swollows it. ive tried all that other stuff and it hasnt worked so thats what i do. and it doesnt hurt him or nothin. |
if I cant crush the pill and put it in yogurt... I put it in cheese or something they like that they dont get much of... I save those fave. foods just for the meds, so I know they will gobble it down. I dont use there treats.. I use human food, so there more interested in eating it and getting more then worrying if there is a pill they dont want to take that is inside. I alway give them a before and after taste of whatever I put it in as well.... so they dont think anything is up  lol Gosh what we do, to get are baby's to take there meds  lol |

We put Sophie's heartworm pill in a piece of cheese, and it goes right down. She loves cheese, and will eat it without a problem. |
I use small pieces of American cheese slices for Otis's allergy pills. He doesn't even try to chew it. I've tried other things, but he figures it out and spits it out. American cheese slices never fail for me. |
Boyfriend brought little soft sausage/hot dog things. Maybe those will work? I'll try again tomorrow! Thanks for all the suggestions everybody! :D That's why I love this site, y'all are so helpful ;) |
cottage cheese, or put them in a little piece of a hot dog. |
Put peanut butter on the pill. That's how I just got Baby to take her heartworm meds! :p |
I hide Stella's Sentinel pills in cheese, she gets a tiny ball first without the pill and then one with the pill inside. |
if the hot dogs didnt work... don't worry your not along. when i got my little guy he was the runt and very sick 4 pills a day. It didn;t matter what they were in he wasn't going to eat it. He would spit it out and hide it , or just spit it infront of you. My only way to do it was the crush the pill and mix that into the peanut butter. The pill needs to be pure powder of he would spit the little pieces out. It worked! |
I dip them in peanut butter, works a treat :) |
We put the pill in spoon and then take the back of another spoon and crush it in the spoon you put it in. Then I mix it with a little bit of green bean or carrot baby food. My babies never know they are taking medicine. They always eat around the pill it if is in a treat or cottage cheese or food. This is the best way we have come up with and it works for us. |
I hide the pill in Cheese Whiz (for some reason, the guys love it!) and then make them do something for it, like a Sit or a Down. I used to use Peanut Butter for my MinPin but these guys seem to eat the PB and spit out the pill! Also, I saw something at the Petstore last week. It was a Treat for giving pills and it was shaped like tiny cup that you put the pill in and then squeeze the treat around it. |
Try baby food and serve from spoon |
I put mine in peanut butter, and if that doesn't work I'll gently open the mouth, and put the pill in the back of the throat. I'll then hold the mouth closed, while massaging the throat. |
Getting our pooches to take their meds I cover it in peanut butter or wrap it into a soft treat. |
I crush the pill to a powder in a ziplock bag with a hammer & place it in a bowl with about 2 Tablespoons of Vanilla Ice Cream. Its the only thing that works for Scruffy. |
We used to put my chihuahua's pills in a mini marshmallow. We'd use 3-5 at a time... Put the pill in the 2nd or 3rd one. Give her the first one, then the second, then the third with the pill in it, and keep them coming quickly-that way they don't have time to spit out the pill, they just chew it up and scarf down the next marshmallow! You could also do this with bread or cheese. |
