i would join liver shunt group as post is higher than 15 still not bad but they are really knowledgeable and may be able to help you out

Winston update: Saw the new vet in Peoria today, liked her very much...Yea!!! She does not suspect an insulinoma, wrong breed, wrong age, wrong symptoms. She is not sure, yet what we are dealing with...hypoglycemia or epilepsy. She wants him to go back to puppy food, and feed him 4 times daily. If he has another episode I am to poke his little ear for a drop of blood and check his glucose, of course I'm to keep records of his sugar's during any seizure. Then if his sugar is low, every time, we proceed with a liver biopsy for glycogen storage. Then she will give him something like a daily, low dose of cortisone to raise his glucose. She wants to check with her lab to see how to do the Insulin-Glucose-Ratio best, to see if his glucose MUST be low to get accurate results. His sugar at her office today was 72...she said a dogs sugar should be around 120, so she thought his was a little bit low. She also checked him over pretty good, and found nothing out of the ordinary. His weight was 7.6#, not obese...but she wouldn't want him to get any bigger. She said his bile acid test was okay...does not suspect liver shunt or MVD. So overall I think it went well...I am so thankful, she put my racing mind at ease. If his sugar's are not low during every seizure, then she would suggest a neurologist for epilepsy.

Well it sounds like you may have better communication with this vet. I hope you feel a little better about everything even if you still don't know what it is yet. It's only a matter of time. You'll get little Winston figured out, soon. I'm always checking this thread to see how he's doing. Let us know when his next appointment is. I am so glad you have a vet who is working with you. Glad to know that things are going well. Keeping you both in our thoughts and prayers!

We don't have a scheduled return appointment...I'm to call her with home glucose readings...and seizure log. And she is to let me know about the Insulin-Glucose-Ratio test.
I'm a little nervous poking his ear with a lancet, but I'll do it...she said the good thing is if he's "out of it" he won't remember that I hurt him...

I thank you...Winston thanks you. I did really like this vet, hope everything goes well. What do you think about putting him back on PUPPY FOOD? I'm afraid he's going to become quite the little porker.

Thanks for your thoughts and prayers...I'm hoping things will improve around here. She (the new vet) says what puzzles her most, is the fact that this came on all of a sudden at the age of 2 years old. Of course we know how hypoglycemia is with puppies...but this is definitely different. So something has triggered it. Right now she wants to make sure his sugar does not go down...and hopefully stop the seizures. If he still has these, and his sugar stays up...then it's epilepsy...and we will be seeing a neurologist, that she'll suggest. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Winston and I accept your prayers, thanks a bunch!!! So far I am really impressed with Dr. Hayes...we'll see how it all goes...well I hope.

I appreciate a response from a Newbie (I was one too, not long ago)...And thanks to you, from Illinois! A good vet is not always easy to find...I think Dr. Hayes may be a keeper. Just wish she were closer, she's about an hour away. It would be impossible to get him there during a seizure, they last about 15 minutes at the most, which seems like an eternity...But she told me I could call her, any time I needed additional advise or help.

Did Winston have a Head Injury?
If So.
If it is Epilepsy - it can be triggered by a head injury.

It is hereditary in my husbands family.
my son had a head injury when he was 4 yrs old with a epileptic seizure.
The Pediatric Neurologist said the fall with the head injury triggered his epilepsy sooner & that he might grow out of it.
He had one Grand Mall Seizure that day & Petit Mall there afterwards till his was older. He was meds 3 times a day for Vertigo until he was about 16 yrs old.

You know, if he did we are unaware of it...but we thought about that too. I have a friend that has a daughter that is epileptic...and hers also was triggered by a head injury, she fell off a trampoline...I think she was like 8 years old at the time, she takes a whole lot of medications too...maybe she'll out grow it...Sorry about your son, but he's doing fine now, right?

OH Yea - he is fine now - he is 28 yrs old & is not on meds anymore.
We kinda oversheltered him as a child & he could not play on the sports team at school.
The doctor felt that if he got hit in the right spot on his head that his Siezures would come back again. So now he makes up for all that.
he is very active - on a local baseball league, works out at the Gym.

I'm so glad you found a new wonderful vet!! I'll continue praying for Winston :)

I'm very happy with her so far...she gave me her thoughts and ideas, plus she treated Winston as if he were her own, and stated that "this is what I would do if he were mine"...I liked that...it was encouraging!!! And she didn't ask me once where did you read that...on the internet???

How is Winston Doing?

Thanks for asking...we so appreciate your concern. Winston is a little eating fool...4 times daily plus snacks, puppy food to boot!!! He has had NO episodes since we started this regime, he goes in for grooming tomorrow...I'm going to have them weigh him, I hope he hasn't put on too much weight. His last episode was June 23rd...not quite a month, but he's gone as long as 2 months between episodes in the past...but I'm praying this will last. So far so good!!!
Oh and he got mail...a card from the new vet...it was actually addressed to Winston, and enclosed was a gift certificate good towards a future visit...I thought that was sort of nice. Thanks once again, I'll try to remember to update next time!!!

So happy to hear that Winston is doing so well and has not had another episode. Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Hopefully he will continue with no problems. Prayers will continue to be said for little Winston.

Hurray, I am glad Winston is doing better. Sounds like he will be back to himself in no time.
