Skin Problems Hi my two Yorkies have a servere skin problem, I have paid out hundered of £'s on skin biopsys and scrapings but my vet cannot find any reason for the problem. They both have raised pinky white spots which burst and get infected. This makes the dogs smell terrible. The vet usually gives them antibiotics but this never cures it. Can any one help? |
What are you feeding? I'm guessing sebbhorea has been ruled out? What does it smell like? Is the skin flaky? Have you tried switching detergent, shampoos etc.? Have cortisone type meds been discussed? |
Have they checked blood for thyroid problems? |
Skin Problem I have been prescribed Seboomild P shampoo (Keratolytic) and Malaseb shampoo (antibacterial & antifungal) plus numerus amounts of different antiboctics. They have been tested for thyroid the vet done full blood work tests. As to their food they are on either Bakers complete or Pal dried food. Plus the odd bits of meat we may give them when we eat. |
2 Attachment(s) Attached are 2 photos of the skin can anyone help Iam getting desperate. Thank you |
Are they related or from the same litter??? If they aren't then that would mean its environmental... I'm stumped (no kidding:rolleyes: ) anyone have ideas for these poor little ones? |
How about Yeast Infections caused by the bacteria Candida? This might be worth while to do some research into Candida and start to give them some daily Probiotics http://www.doggiesparadise.com/dog-s...nfection.shtml http://search.onlynaturalpet.com/sea...s=Candida&mf=0 Wishing you all the best! :) |
Yes they are related. same parents but one litter apart. Other sibblings have dry skin problems but none have spots and infections like my two. Thank you for your suggestions will research into yeast infections and let you know outcome. Thanks to you all for your input. |
The skin infection might be the result of an overgrowth of BAD bacteria: Candida Yes, do some research and start to give them some Probiotics. I bought my in the Vitamin store (in the fridge section). I keep mine in the freezer for freshness and to last longer. The brand I bought is Udo's Choice - Super 8 Probiotics They are capsules and I sprinkle a good amount daily onto a spoon of Danon Activa Yogurt. I hope you are able to help them heal, those pics look like they are very uncomfortable. P.S. Since you say your Vet has tried everything, maybe you might want to consider a Holistic Vet, maybe they could help??? just an idea :) P.S.S. I am also feeding Organic Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil to Roxy and TJ. It is suppose to have wonderful ALL around health benefits. Google: Coconut Oil for Dogs see what you come up with ;) |
I have been searching the net for information of Yeast infections as you suggested and I now believe this could be the problem my girls have. One of the many symptoms mentioned is them constantly licking their paws and the skin on the paws getting "thick" and black. Both my girls are doing this. My problem is now how to treat it, I dont want to take advice from a website that sells products to treat Yeast infections because their main aim would be to sell their products. Is anyone able to recommend from experience any good products. Could you bear in mind that in England we are more restricted to what we can buy in stores. (We have to purchase most things via a vet):aimeeyork |
Poor Babies ! They must be misarable, i hope you find out what is causing this ! |
I am not really too sure how to offically treat a yeast infection. Maybe you could mention it to your Vet and see what they say. Probiotics (are good bacteria) Yeast (bad bacteria) There needs to be an equal balance. So I would first start by going to the Health Food store (human) and get some Probiotics and start to sprinkle some daily to their food. |
:) Feeling a little happier, I have changed my vet to someone who specialises in Skin problems and spent over an hour with him yesterday. We are going to try thyroid tablets, zinc tablets and antibiotics. (Even though the blood test came back negative for thyroid, apparently it often does in dogs). Its now a case of fingers crossed and wait to see if this treatment works. The vet I have now signed up with instilled a lot more confidence and he truly believes he can get my little girls better. Lets hope so. Thank you all for your messages. I will let you know how things go.:thumbs up |

keta chlor is a good anti fungal shampoo |
I bought a small amount from my local Raw food distributor. But then I bought a big gallon from Tropical Traditions. www.tropicaltraditions.com |
do u ever put on skin for soothing ? |
No I haven't done that, I feed it daily. If you do a google search for "coconut oil for dogs' you'll find lots of info to read about it and how to use it ;) |
More bother now! The girls skin seems to be clearing a little, but as the new vet says its early days for the thyroid to kick in yet. BUT, now 1 or both of them are having accidents on the kitchen floor. I cant believe at 7 and 8 years old they would suddenly start doing this. The other day the door was wide open and one of them just sat there and pee'd. Could it be the thyroid tablets? I cant figure out which one is doing it to chastise her, might have to keep a watch until i do!! |
My girl (Roxy) will do that too. She is almost 3 and every now and then she gets into a mode and she'll pee here and there all over the house. I don't know what the deal is? I had mine checked for UTI - just in case ;) |
Skin problem Two years on on I am still no further forward with getting a solution for this terrible problem. The new vet has tried all sorts including tyroid treatment and steriods. My poor girls skin is still very sore and smelly all I can do is bathe them lots which seems to ease it a little. |

I see that you've done tests -- but has anything been grown out in culture media? I mean, I think the areas really need to be cultured and grown out, so the "bug" can be identified. Of "bugs" (generic term), it could be Staph, Candida, Ring Worm, etcetera. Pyoderma? Mange? Without an actual diagnosis, I'm at a loss of ideas for you. :( It is really awful that not even steroids work. |
A few years ago, Simon, my yorkie, kept getting staph infection. He would clear up while on antibiotics but would break out again. Finally, the vet recommended a medicated shampoo that I've used ever since & swear by it!! It's called, Vets Universal Medicated Shampoo. You might give it a try. Here is a link where you can buy it. It's much cheaper than buying it from the vet. Good Luck!! Absolutelypets.com- Free Shipping for orders $100 |
This is the Shampoo that I have been bathing Roxy in for the past year. I do NOT use conditioner, and I rinse her very, very well. ChlorhexiDerm Max. Shampoo 2% 12oz Chlorhexiderm is an antiseptic, antimicrobial shampoo combining surface-active penetrating agents and emollients for optimal therapeutic effectiveness. For conditions where an antiseptic, antimicrobial, cleansing and deodorizing formulation may be of benefit. 12 oz. Contains 2% chlorhexidene. I also give her 1/4 teaspoon of oral aloe vera gel (human kind from the vitamin shoppe). Aloe Vera is awesome, and it helps from the inside out. |
Skin Problem Thanks for your replies, I have just ordered some Vet Solutions Medicated Shampoo and some Skin-eze tablets. Lets see whether these help. I will let you all know once they arrive.:) |
Trying a different Shampoo Quote:
I am also trying them on Skin eze tablets, maybe it's them? Does anyone know? |
Is this worth trying? My girls are still suffering and the vet is at a loss what to do. A friend has now suggested I try antihistamine (childrens strength) to help them with the itching and scratching. Has anyone used this? Would it be safe to buy and try it? Thanks |

Sore Skin I cant believe it's two years since I put my original post on here regarding Pepsi and Zola's skin problems. Zola, seems to be under control by just bathing on a regular basis but Pepsi is in a terrible state. I bath her twice a week and she is constantly scratching and she smells absolutely terrible, even after about an hour or so after a bath. I took her back to the vet last week and they just changed her shampoo AGAIN. I am at my wits end, the poor thing is so smelly no-one wants her near them and my house smells all the time. I really just dont know where to turn to for help. My insurance wont pay for any more treatment relating to Pepsi's skin and I have run out of funds. PLUS she now has the added problem of her trachea is collapsing so she sounds like a demented Sea Lion. I just wish someone could help her. |
