Question about Food Guys, Cosita does eat her puppy food, but she does not look too happy when she does. She begs a lot when we eat (I mean, she stares with begging face). I feel really bad cuz just imagine eating the same food everyday. I think she must be tired. Some one said that you either give them dog food or human food. Not both. Well, I don't know what to do. I kind of want to give her both, but I am afraid she will not want to eat her doggy food anymore. I wonder what she thinks when we fix those smelly delicious food and she gets nothing. She looks sad when she realizes she isn't getting any. This is the bad part of having a dog. Yesterday I gave in, I gave her rice and I mixed it with the chicken legs juice it had (not meat tho). She was like in heaven. Now today she has not eating anything but keeps begging. Guys, with your experience, do you think I can give her both? what kind of human food should I give her? Would she eat doggy food after picking on human food? or should I stop completely giving her human food. I am not a cook kind of gal, and many times I eat out so I don't have to dirty my kitchen pots. I don't want to spoil my doggy either that she would expect human food all the time. ok this is hard huh? Lemmie know your kind thoughts. -r |
We feed Yoda both. When he begs, we tell him, no you have your own food. Usually he gets chicken (not salted, just boiled and cut up) 3-4x a week or he gets some kind of hamhock bone. When they are hungry, they will eat their food. You just have to be stern, as hard as it may be. But feeding them too much human food will make them not like their food much. |
Thanks fasteddie, I just gave her chicken just like you said. Boy I tell you she just loves it. Do you think I can give her sausages? (sp?) ... You know, those little winners. Or perhaps they have too much sodium huh? thanks for the tip. -R |
Hi fasteddie: I just found another food thread: "Do you ever give your Yorkie human food?" was just few posts below. Got all the info there. I guess I can alternate human food and doggy food. I think she will be happier. -r :p |
Yes, I'm not sure about sausages, most are quite salty. We give Yoda bits and pieces of hot dog from time to time, but not on a constant basis. I'd venture to say that boiled chicken is probably the healthiest meat for them. :) |
Are you talking about spicy sausage?? I met a fellow "Yorkie lover" in Louisiana who almost killed her baby with sausage!! She said her baby had been just picking at her food for several days and she was about to eat some sausage and her yorkie begged for some and she gave it to her! They had to rush her to the vet and for two or three days didn't know if she would live! I believe I would ask my vet before I gave her anything other than chicken! One thing I have learned [and been surprised] is that their little systems just can't tolerate is onion, chocolate, spicy foods and didn't have a clue until Kindness posted about grapes!! I have found that owning a Yorkie causes you to learn new things every day!!! ;) |
I agree with Bettyeanne, you should ask your vets which foods are ok to offer your yorkie. There is some foods that can be poisonous to them, and other than can cause digestive problems. I think that's why dog food is a safer and complete nutrition we can offer. Have you ever heard about BARF? Maybe it's is a good option for cosita... |
Hi, Actually I was talking about hotdogs, I would imagine spicy foods are not good for them. But I think i will stick with boiled chicken like faseddie suggested. Oh i haven't heard about BARF but I found this web: http://www.barfworld.com/html/barfworld/about.shtml .. I will check into it. |

You could try giving your Yorkie "Graduates" from Gerber. They're tiny little baby hotdog sticks that you buy a jar from the baby food section at the supermarket. They come in chicken, turkey, and meat flavors. Otis loves them. |
Thanks Junebug, I will try that one better. Sounds like another good choice. ;) r |
Yep, Junebug, the Gerber Graduates are great for these picky eaters!! In addition to the little meat sticks, Toto loves the little green beans and the carrots! I keep a few jars on hand for those picky days! Toto likes veggies! She also loves a little Asian Pear and apples ... I only give her about 2 teaspoons cut into tiny pieces! One thing I have noticed with the Graduates ... she will eat those along with her regular dog food! ;) Another treat she likes is veggie pasta ... I cook that and give it to her with a little sour cream and she is a happy girl!! :) |
Oh wow, this is all good info!!! |
I reckon all yorkies (like people) are different in some ways but I feel I need to tell you all about what happened to Buckeye. Buckeye always begged for our food while we ate. Not wanting to say no to my little boy, I would give him some. nothing spicy or anything I thought would hurt him. I would poach him an egg in the morning and give him special made things just for him. He didn't want his drabby ole dog food any more. Well one day he was very sick and throwing up blood. I was crying on the way to the vet. I freeked out. I thought he was going to die. The first thing the vet asked me was what I was feeding him. He said his little stomach is too sensitive for people food and never give it to him. They will not eat dog food that is good for them if you keep giving them people food. (and he wouldn't). We had to fast him for 24 hrs. No water-no food, nothing. The poor thing was even doing his tricks for me to get just anything by the end of the day. all the while I was trying to ignore him because I felt so bad not able to give him anything. I did break down and give him a little water before going to bed because I felt so bad for him. He was put on an antibiotic too. It took a while before he would eat his own food but I never ever give him people food any more. He now sits fairly quiet beside us at the table while we eat. When we are finished we give them a treat. Ahia on the other hand, I think, has an iron stomach and could probably eat nails. |
Good to hear Buckeye made it through. I'm sure the toughest part of being any Yorkie parent is to not give in to their cute begging! |
HI denise, I am so glad Buckeye made it through. That is why I am so concerned about giving her human food. It is just so hard to see their little begging face. I was thinking to give her just the boiled chicken just few days a week as a big day treat and probably the gerber graduates to alternate. But most of the time will be the dog food. I can imagine I should not give her too good of tasty human food cuz soon enough she will find out that there is better food and not like the doggie food anymore. Yesterday she ate all her doggy food fine. I guess she was starving and came to realization that there was not human food that day. Thanks for sharing your story. We all will take it into consideration on how we feed our little ones. I also think some Yorkies have stronger stomacks than others. I think Cosita is in between. But I still need to watch out what I give her. -r |
