Just water? Hello my question today is. Can i give my yorkie anything to drink besides water? i think as a human i would be sick of just drinking water everyday. I wanna know whats safe and that won't make him sick. we have given him warm milk from time to time. we found out that cold milk makes him sick. so we warm it up and his fine. so any suggestions on what else they can drink? his 3 years old this Aug. |
i really dont know if you should give anything but water, im sure some else can let you know.. i wouldnt take that chance.. water is good for all |
Well, yes.... "just water" for humans is boring but dogs are different. I've always heard not to give dogs anything but water. Even with cats, it's not good to give them milk but I've heard of people doing it all the time. Many people say that dog food must be "boring" to dogs too but I think it's us, the humans, that have that opinion. Dogs only know to eat what you feed them. I'm no expert though so it'll be interesting to see if someone knows differently. |
You can definitely add some Pedialyte (or generic). It comes in fruity type flavors and is very safe. Do a ratio of 1/3 pedia 2/3 water or 1/4 pedia 3/4 water. |
"Just Water"? Humans would be healthier if we took our cue from dogs and drank "just water". Food and rink is meant to sustain life, not be entertainment. Animals know that. |

:thumbs_up Good way to put it! |
I know you can also mix 3/4 water with 1/4 poweraide (or gateraide) That what my mom gives her pups in the summer time. |
Logan likes to drink the propel fitness water. I figure it should be safe given that it's just water with sugar & flavor added. I figure the sugar should help with hypoglecmia in the summer. I have heard that caffeine is bad for them & that most animals are mildly lactose intolerant towards cow milk. |
Misha is very picky and I am having a hard time getting her to take an antibiotic that is powder. I can't sprinkle it in yogurt or most foods because she won't eat it. I've been putting it on her cheerios with a little lactose free milk. She's been drinking it up. The only thing is the milk is $4 bucks a half gallon. |

i agree with you about that! now if only we could live by that, too. |

I don't know about you all, but I loooove water. Nothing else quenches my thirst like water, and I never get tired of it. Dogs don't get tired of water... If you didn't know chocolate existed, you would never crave it, right? Same thing with dogs, if they don't know anything else is out there, they don't care about trying a new drink...Water is crucial for their health. |

Since dogs do well with animal protien, then milk is just fine. Mine get milk two to three times a week and sometimes I mix their yogurt into it. You can give them soup too if it's home made. Just boil chicken, carrots, celery and cabbage till done, strain, saving the chicken and veggies, put in ref. till cold, then skim off any fat. The rest can be fed to the dogs at meal time. |
Many dogs are highly allergic to milk. If your little one got sick off cold milk, I would be VERY cautious about giving him warm milk. I would play it safe and just stick to water. Dogs don't get tired of it, I promise! If you give him something instead of water, he is likely to get dehydrated or develop a UTI. |

I have had no problems giving Chewy things other than water. I dont give it to her every day or even every week but sometimes as a treat i give her a little bit of apple juice or arizona green tea. I have sound that she doesnt like cranberry juice. I tried giving her a tiny amount when she was having urinary issues but havent tried since then. I think as long as the dog likes it and doesnt have any reactions to it then there is no problem. I guess giving them soda or coffee may not be a good idea..but then again i dont drink soda either. |
I Only Give Harvey Water - I Have Heard That You Should Not Give Milk As It Makes Their Breath Smell Bad??????? |
I only give Brandi bottled water......but that's because I wouldn't drink tap water why would I expect her to? :animal36 |
mammals become lactose intolerant after weaning. That is why your dog probably gets sick. Humans are the only mammals that still drink milk after being weaned. i wouldn't give my dog anything but water unless it was necessary for her health, like getting her to drink chicken broth if she was dehydrated and sick |
Gordon gets filter water from my fridge...same as I. I make him a organic drink that he loves once in awhile after coming in from a walk. I give him water with one tablespoon of organic Apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of organic honey. He loves it and will run the the cabinet where the honey and apple cider is and bark for it. |
I sometimes give Bruce a drink called K-9 Quencher gutter water. It is like a flavored water/sports drink for dogs. He loves it!!! You can get it at most specialty/high end pet stores! I would be reluctant to give juice or anything like that though. |
if you give him milk.. you should dilute it with water.. thats what i do so princess wont get sick |
Hmmmm I only give water to, but would like to somehow make some kind of water freeze pop thingy for summer that would last a while.....any ideas????:p |
Freeze watermellon juice. Dogs love watermellon. Mine get it once in awhile when it's nice and hot outside. |
I give mine lots of water and no, they don't get bored of it. I occasionally give him some home cooked chicken soup if I am making some and also a few tablespoons of lactose free milk once in a while. |
Since Babybear had his accident and broke his neck over 8 months ago the only thing he will drink is coffee milk diluted with water.( he doesnt' know it is diluted) If i do put to much water in it he will refuse it. I have put a bowl of water in front of him for a whole day and he would not drink it. I told the vet this and he suggested I try pedialyte he hated it would not drink it. He said try diluted juice nope that didn't work. Next was chicken broth he wouldnt' even drink that. So back to the coffee milk we went. Vet said as long as he drinks it and doesn't get sick keep it up. Other than that he will not drink anything. But I do have to say tonight I tried again to offer him water because it was 88 today and I was scared the milk would curddle in his belly. He was panting I put some water in front of him with ice and he drank the whole bowl, but he refuse to drink the milk today so he was quite thristy by this evening. In the summer time I by freeze pops for my big furbabies and they love them frozen and so does Babybear they get one once or twice a week. |
