Bully sticks vs. rawhide I don't give either, due to a choking incident involving Emma and rawhide a few months back. Everyone seems to talk up the bully sticks and the flossies...I have a few questions: I know what bully sticks "ARE", but what are flossies? I've heard they stink bad-is this true? What is the difference/why are bully sticks/flossies better? Would we avoid the risk by using these rather than rawhide? Any other info? |
Is a flossie like a greenie? I'm wondering this too as I'm forever on the chase for safe chewy things. |
OK, I will finally confess...I don't even know what a bully stick is:confused: . I know what rawhide chews are and Murfee very rarely gets those. One of my sons dogs choked on them..but what is a bully stick? |
Suzzy, I will leave the flossie talk to someone who uses them. I can however give you EXTENSIVE information about bully's. I will post a snippet of what I know... BullySticks are made from penis or in some cases "ligament". Now I don't know what type of "meat" the penis would be considered -- ligament or muscle????? I'm not clear on that one -- maybe someone more knowledgeable about Bully's and/or penises can fill us in. Anyway -- some bully's are greasy and really stink PU gag a maggot type of stink. I have found that some of the pricey ones -- Red Barn, for example fall in the "stinky" category. I have found two in particular that DO NOT STINK -- well they don't smell any worse than anything else your yorkie can chew up and get slimy..... but this is more of a "yorkie breath" kind of stink. Hands down these are my two favorites: 1) If you only need one to try or only buy a few I would buy from Kathryn_V at BeyondSpoiled. You simply cannot beat her service, her prices are great, they are come packaged very nicely and buying from her helps to support one of our YT family members: www.beyondspoiled.com 2) If you need a whole bunch of them -- like me -- I buy bully's by the lot of 200 -- my personal favorite is an ebay dealer eddieb260. Here is a link to one of his ebay auctions and at $59.95 with FREE shipping for 200 4" bully's it would be hard to beat his prices. The all caps message below came from eddieb260's ebay site: http://cgi.ebay.com/BULLY-BULL-STICK...QQcmdZViewItem OUR BULLY STICKS ARE IN NO WAY ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECENT RECALL OF T.W.ENTERPRISES. THEY ARE MANUFACTURED IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, AND MEET THE HIGHEST USDA STANDARDS |
Cindy, did you say penis..and really mean penis?? I don't get it. What is the point of chewing on a penis?? |
:eyetearss Patty, I can't answer that one -- I've never actually chewed on a penis before. :eyetearss The bully sticks I buy REALLY/TRULY ARE made from the penises. When dried they are like a piece of thick very tough jerky. |
Bully sticks are indeed dried bull penis which is apparently considered a tendon of sorts. Flossies are beef tendon (not penis so maybe a better choice for anyone that is uncomfortable with the penis idea). The flossies are much thinner and curled. I have never bothered with flossies just because I think they would go thru them too fast but I'm sure they would love them just as much. Both are digestible and far safer than rawhide. I've never seen either of my two yorkies or larger dog get a chunk off like rawhide. They just chew on the end for hours and it slowly gets shorter. I find they do stink a bit. I usually take them away if it's anywhere near bedtime as my dogs sleep with me and I don't need to be smelling bull penis while I am sleeping. Costco has started carrying them. They are in a pack of 1 dozen 12" sticks for about $12.50 or so. I prefer to use the 12" ones because they last quite a while and I always throw them away when they get down to a couple inches long so the 4" ones would be half waste. |

Cindy, Is that what you sent Murfee with his harness and leash? Is he really chewing on a penis..OMG..and he loves it:D |

Hmmm, I could be wrong. I just had a look around (google) and maybe the flossies are penis's as well. Whatever. |

:eyetearss :eyetearss :eyetearss OMG..... your way to funny.....!!!!! The point of chewing on a Penis is this: :D :D :D The dogs love to and it keeps them ocupied for hours on end. And its totally HEALTHY... well maybe it healthy.. Who Knows. |
Finally someone replyed to what a bullystick is.... I've been wondering for sometime now. Now I'm wondering .......did I REALLY want to know this!?? Naw, I can handle this Thanks for the info Jennifer & Lola |
..but a penis. Now who would have ever even thought of that. My mind is just boggled:rolleyes: |
Hahaha...wow... |
Thank you all for the info...but do I really want my precious little furgirls chewing on a bull "winkie"? I think not! I'm a vegetarian myself, and that's one "cut" of meat I just can't stomach giving to my dogs! I thought maybe flossies were different...but I think we'll stick with Nylabones and stuffed Kongs unless we find something else that's safe. |
Rawhides are just horrible on dogs, they dont digest well at all. To be honest I just do not understand why petstores are loaded with so many forms of rawhides. Bully sticks are much easier to digest, and dogs LOVE them. But like all treats, dont over do it. I wouldnt let your dog have one after another, after another, etc. Penny(my boxer) once snuck into my stash of bully treats and ate 20 at a time and it didnt hurt her but is sure did freak me out. I usually let my girls have one every few days. |
I think it is a muscle just like any other....easy to stretch and make it really thin. We eat most of the other muscles of the cow...is there really a dif. |
Bengi likes flossies better because it's thinner so he can chew it faster. I have to keep and eye on him when he's having one, because he might eat it all in less than an hour, and if he does, though it's digestable, it's too much for his little belly, and his poop might get too soft. He likes bully sticks but chews one a little bit and then stop till the next day; they last longer, though. They both have terrible smell! |
I've got to say - I love living in my little world - never in my life would I have guessed that a flossy was a dried up bull's penis - That is just wrong - And to think - my little boy had that in his mouth - YUK. I've actually been searching high and low for more flossy's because he ate the first one - but the search has now ended - I can't do it - LMAO... I did find something called "OINKIES" - which I will not ask what this is - I personally do not need to know - He seems to enjoy them - and they are all natural - and that's all that i need know. I'm gaining too much knowledge from this site. I may just have to leave and never return....lol:eek: |

Are bully sticks and flossies safe to give to puppies? I heard once somewhere not to give them to dogs until adult teeth are in, but Tia LOVES to chew, and as much as she loves her flexible nylabone, I just don't trust it (I'm constantly picking off the loose pieces). |
Flossies and bully sticks are the best. They don't actually look like penises so I just try not to think about it. I guess on the positive side, it's one more part not going to waste. The ones from Beyond Spoiled and the Merricks are the two I've tried that don't stink. It does seem like the flossies don't get as gross and slimy as the bullys. |
i just laughed out loud at my desk, "oinkies" crack me up! I'm still on the fence. They definately need to chew and I do worry about safety of what they get. Can anyone tell me if Hartz pigs ear/hide twists are safe. If not, I'll try to wrap my mind around these Bull weiners!! Keep telling myself, whatever's best for my boys. If they don't care, neither should I;) |
Ok.... so, no matter what shape they are in (straight, braided rings etc..) if it says bully stick then it is all the same thing, other than if it is extra stinky? I needed to know what bully sticks are or even looked like b/c someone "VERY SPECIAL" has asked for one or some and I had NO CLUE what I was looking for. |

I just had to bring this one back up. Cindy (chattiesmom) REALLY got me today. You see, she HAD sent me a bully stick for Murfee, but silly me had never seen or heard of a bully stick. All I knew was that Murfee loved his new "chew" toy. Well he had it about all chewed up so I, being the innocent that I am, emailed Cindy to ask her where I could get another chewie. Weeeelllll, to my GREAT surprise, she informed my, after she got off the floor from laughing, what it was that my little punkin was chewing on:eek: If you look back at this thread you will see why she was having such a great time. Anyway now my baby boy is a new convert to the "dreaded" bull penis:D |
I have the most exciting news..... I actually TALKED with Mr. EddieB260 on the telephone tonight. I am thrilled! (ok, so it doesn't take a lot). He is the closest thing to a celebrity I have talked with in a long while. Anyway, I ordered some bully's and needed to have them sent to a different address and I couldn't figure out how to do that with ebay and paypal, so I sent him an email and then saw his phone # so I called him and left a message. In a few minutes he called me back. Let me tell you, that man HAS ONE NICE voice! AND..... he knew me!!!!! He said --"Is this Chattiemom?" Oh wow. He was very nice...... we got the ordering information figured out and he wanted me to thank everyone here at YT who had ordered from him. :) |
I gotta say that I was kinda grossed out at first when I heard what bully sticks were but was willing to give a safe treat a try on my :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork . Holy cow did they just love em. I am a believer. I also give them Texas Toothpicks by Merrick which are puffed up beef tails. |

I remember when I first found out, I was like  GROSS!! Everyone around me always asks "WHY do you buy those things?!" But Jackson LOVES them (flossies & bully sticks!) to pieces so I couldn't let him suffer without. lol. Plus, he had a choking incident with a rawhide so never again. I have, on occasion, given him those smaller rawhide dental-like sticks and he did fine but not in months. I avoid rawhides at most all costs. I HAVE gotten a few kinds that smell HORRIBLE. I must say though, the seller AMD on here... hers are great and do not smell at all. Jackson went through them pretty quickly though, as he's 14lbs so from now on, I'm thinking I may just buy the 12 inch or larger ones and maybe cut them up. There's a store near my house that sells all the great brands of food and treats and they like a 24 inch bully stick, that thing was massive LOL. |
