Thanks for posting that link! I was so intent on paying attention to the dog foods for Tatum and Stormie (our Aust. Shep.) that I didn't even notice that our two outdoor cat's food is on the list! On no, I just looked closer at the list (printed it out) and it's on the canned food. So, if the dry doesn't have a "Y" under it, it should be good? I hope so! Doesn't appear to be very many dry ones on the list yet. Hope it stays that way. |
OMG not again!! This is making me nuts!! :thumbdown |
Better Safe than Sorry I would avoid all Pet foods that contain wheat gluten, rice protein, and corn gluten for now IMHO. Pet food in South Africa has been found to contain contaminated corn gluten. While I'm not aware of any food in the US being found to contain contaminated corn gluten, I would still avoid it just to be on the safe side. Below is a report found on Itchmo which mentions Royal Canin. It applies only to the Royal Canin in South Africa. The 29 cases of renal failure in South Africa has been linked to melamine in corn gluten used in pet food. Corn gluten is used extensively in the US.I think that both the puppy and Yorkshire formula of Royal Canin contain corn gluten but could someone confirm that? Try this link for more on this story and all the latest recall information. http://www.itchmo.com/go/tagged/safety/ |
If you want a Vet. to help you with home cooked recipes or raw, then I strongly suggest finding a holistic vet. since most other vets. are not trained in neutrition, and only want to seel the dog food they have in their offices. |
I forgot to mention that the less expensive way to find the best information on real food, has recipes and written by an holistic vet. is Dr. Pitcairs book titled Dr. Pitcairn's complete guide to NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS & CATS. It's also a medical book and tells how to treat different things. It's the best book on the market for this information. |
Thanks for that tip YorkieDaze, I have heard of this book, and will be ordering it... With Miko's condition, I have to be extremely careful, and I have become very knowledgable about what foods are good and bad for liver compromised dogs and dogs who produce ammonium urate stones...I have been cooking for him but I need some guidance as to how much of everything he needs....I will check that book out :) |
When I took Brandi in to the vet because she was acting ill and I had been feeding her the Nutro Natural pouches I asked him about homecooking.......he said normally he'd wouldn't recommend it BUT in light of what's been going on with the recalls.....it's probably a good idea.....what he suggested was 60% Protein....20% Veggies.....and 20% Carb (he said like a pastina or rice) |
I feed my babies Diamond puppy food. I get it at my local farm and home supply store. I didn't see it on the list of recalls.. Am I right? |
I havent seen the nutro natural choice, small bites or any nutro dry on the recall list. this is what I have fed maggie for a good while and just bought a new bag last week. I hope they dont start pulling that . |

Thanks for posting that Shana. I printed it for a friend today, that's a good summary sheet. Geez, this is all getting so confusing!!! |
 How much longer is this recall going to go on? :thumbdown |
I'm so lost and confused with all of this. Seems like it would be easier to just post a list of what's safe at this point and check 'em off as they hit the recall. Anyone? I need to buy food and I'm not sure what to get. |
I know the Science Diet is safe and that is what my vet told me to switch to. Is this a good food for yorkies to eat? |
