For those of you with allergic/itchy yorkies...
 

If your yorkie has ever been so allergic that they ended up with infected bumps on thier skin, and you've managed to get any improvement other than with antibiotics/steroids please tell me:

A) What you are feeding them, brand and blend?
B) What shampoo/conditioner?
C) What kind of skin anti itch spray?


Thanks in advance for the recommendations. BTW I need foods without corn and chicken as we are pretty sure my little one is allergic to them.

Cali scratches ALL the time I had her allergy tested nothing, I switched her food to no corn, wheat etc still sscratching. Meds don't help. When I had Maya at the specialist dermatologist I mentioned Cali's problem and she said even with the testing it doesn;t mean they aren't allergic to something. SHe said her and other dermatologists around the country believe most allergies in dogs is food related and said I would need to do the food elimination diet, I don't know what exactly that is but I plan on making her an appointment as soon as I recover from Maya's expenses. I will let you know what I find out,

Did you have a skin scraping done by the vet?

I would look for natural balance fish and potatoes

I took my Charlie to allergy vet and ran gamut of test. Was finally ready to put him on daily shots, when I went to inquire about having them made up my vet told me about a new drug called atopica, it is like a miracle drug, he still has a bout now and then but it is much milder than he ever had before and it will only last an hoiur or so instead of weeks on end. Charlie was tested and found to have allergies to corn and tomatoes(many healthy dog foods contain tomatoes) and strawberries and certain kinds of molds on these items, He has contact allergies as well as food allergies.

He eats canidae(they have a lamb and rice formulas as well as chicken and rice, he also eats their canned food, and I use nutros natural choice small puppy bites
Chicken meal rice and oatmeal formula(might have formula without chicken, not sure) Also have fed the allergy formula fish and sweet potatoe by Natural Balance. I do alot of cooking as well, chicken hearts and gizzards boiled and potatoe and rice with it or scrambled eggs and sometimes stewing beef that i mix with his dry food. I know this is frustrating, but ther is hope.

She's been seeing a dermatologist for over a year now. He presribed d/d salmon and potatoe but I'm considering switching her to the natural balance fish and potato and if that doesn't work, maybe the duck and potato. Atopica is a brand name for cyclosporine and apparently Bailey's dermatologist actually did some of the studies on it. (I've seen them online) When we started treating Bailey atopica was not yet available in Canada so the vet presribed Neurol which is pretty much the same thing (cyclosporine)..Yes it's been working well, stopped most of the "bump" outbreaks and cleared up problems with her mouth that antibiotics wouldn't fix. Unfortunately the drug acts as an immunosuppressant which makes it easier to get other infections. She's gotten eye, ear and bladder infections since going on cyclosporine. Still the drug was giving her considerable relief. Unfortunately during treatment for her UTI, we discovered protein in her urine. After almost a thousand dollars in follow up blood and urine tests, none of her other levels are out of whack. The vet and I now think the problem may be caused by the drug, so we stopped giving it to her. Now we have to wait awhile and retest her urine to see if the protein level goes back down. Anyone planning on trying cyclosporine (Atopica, Neoral) I would recommend having a urine test to check the protein level before you start the drug and again after being on it a few months.

for the heads up on atopica, I will be seeing vet in the next few wks and will have blood work done to check protein levels.

I have the same problem for years .I been reading YT and got some good recommedantions . I change Minnie's food to Wellness all natural no preservatives ( lamb and brown rice) also missing link and dermcare is a liquid caplets ( petsmart) is been only 2 days and i see the different on the allergies itching and scratching also i give her a bath today and her hair was much softer and easy to detangle but i don't know if is the dermacare caplets or if the missing link but something is helping my baby .

Gin used to be itchy and bumpy, we changed foods (took them off Iams, just in time it seems), use hypoallergenic shampoo and added missing link. She doesn't break out anymore, but I couldn't isolate the solution, just one of those things--or maybe all of them.

The FIRST thing you need to do is put her on a new food. I would go with Natural Balance...either Duck and Potato or Sweet Potato and Fish. That is the only thing I found to clear up my Hobbs' dry, itchy, dandruffy skin.

I was told Ralphie had staph infection. He was on 2 different meds for 40 days and he seemed to have cleared up for about 3 or 4 weeks. And now, the bumps are back. Either he has staph again or he's allergic to the Hill's U/D prescription food, which I hate. I have been adding Missing Link to his diet and his coat is very silky again. It was dry and flaky and bumpy before.

Unfortunately, I cannot change his food because of his stone problems. ONe surgery was enough for me. I was told I could change his food to whatever I wanted if he remained on special medication for the rest of his life, and that's not what I want to do either. So I'm in the middle again. :confused:

The dermatologist already tested for and ruled out staph, fleas and all other extrernal parasite type problems. Ours is definitely allergy, he thinks inhalant/contact while I'm not convinced we've eliminated diet as a (main) problem.

My Cody only gets itchy and bumpy in April. So I think he actually has seasonal allergies.:rolleyes:

Started Bailey on Natural Balance Duck and Potatoe today and she loves it! Still gulps most of them whole = ( wish this food came in a bugger kibble to force her to chew. So how long should it take before i see if she's scratching more or less? I thought I had to wait about 6 weeks...can anyone confirm or deny this?

Get the Missinglink also (Petsmart).I see a difference in 2 days ,Today is the 3 day and it looks better every day . GOOD LUCK

Jazzie had really bad allergies, bumps, puss and all. The dematologist wanted to start her on allergy injections but I searched the web for answers and this really makes sense and it works!

Funny but it's mostly about eleminating glutens (the wheat gluten was the cause of the contaminated foods that were recalled).

She now eats Natural Balance Duck & Potato (the Venison version made her coat too greasy). Good luck!

My yorkie also was very itchy and had dry skin I changed her food to believe it or not kirkland brand food found in Costco chicken and brown rice for small breeds. And she is not ichy anymore and her coat is shinnier and her breath smells better. I definiately think you switch foods most dog allergies do steam from the food that they are eating. So look for more organic and natural food and read the labels.

Has anyone used the peace and kindness spray with any results (good or bad)?

We did the urine test and blood work prior so thanks for the advice- how is your pup now - wanted to bump this to see what is happening

how was the sweet potato and fish food as dd is on salmon and pot by dd and chews her paws and we are not sure if maybe that food may be causing it as she itched on food elimination diet when on pinto beans and pot but seemed to get itchier when put back on this food

I did a food elimination diet from my dermatologist and it was a 3 month trial of pinto beans, safflower oil, potato and one centrum vitamin a day as we had done several different novel proteins so we had to go with that diet - she was a little less itchy but not completely so they think it is food, flea, and environmental - she is hyperallergic :( it is rough

Hello Patti, I just read your reply and noticed you said you had your baby tested for allergies and found nothing, have you ever had her checked for thyroid?, the only reason I ask is because my baby scratches all the time and I have been searching for an answer and my sister mentioned that her friends dog had all the same symptoms as an allergic dog, the scratching, licking, etc and she had a blood test done for thyroid and that is what it ended up being even though her dog had all the symptoms of an allergic dog, I am sure by now you have tried everything, but if you have not thought of thyroid definitely get the test it would be worth it, she said all she has to do is give her dog one pill a day and he is fine. I got the test for my baby and was so hoping that was what the problem was but unfortunately it was not. I am now considering Atopica which I am very nervous about, but I think at this point I do not have any other choice. Dee Dee had thyroid test but i heard the best thyroid test is to have vet send blood to jean dodds as she runs an extensive thyroid panel - i thought about with dd but her thyroid was fine - i wish there was a solution but now she is on atopica and i hate doing the pills too :(

Does the Missing Link help with the itching because it has Omega 3 in it? My pup is very itchy and I'm at wits end. I just got some Missing Link today.

B) What shampoo/conditioner? EarthBath from PetCo, the kind with tea tree oil and aloe.
C) What kind of skin anti itch spray? None. But, once Hobbs neck broke out REALLY bad so I shaved it and rubbed coconut oil on it several times a day. The coconut oil won't hurt if they lick it. It cleared his neck up in no time.

Just went to dermatologist wednesday and she said do not use tea tree oil on an allergic dog as it is plant based and they can have an allergic reaction to it

what was the brand of coconut oil you used?
