When do they go into heat? Roxy is going to be 6 months on June 8th and Gibson will be 6 months on June 28th. I am thinking of getting them spayed and neutered at the same time, after Gibson is 6 months old. The problem is I dont want Roxy to go into heat before then, and she will almost be 7 months old before Gibson is 6 when do they usually go into heat? |
It really just varies with all dogs. My friend's yorkie went in at 6 months. My Gracie didn't go in until 11 1/2 months. |
I think they can go into heat anywhere from 5 to 7 mos. I am in the same postion as you with a male and a female close in age. Only my male is 4 weeks older. They are 5 mos and 4 mos now so I will be neutering my male soon also. |
I am in the same position you are in too.. Missy went into her 1st heat at 6mo old, she is now almost 11mo and is into her 2nd heat!! I just discovered it last night.. I was planning to have them both spay/neutered on June 15th but now I am really worried.. I hope I didnt put it off too long. Missy's heat is hardley noticable, I thought she was acting a little different so I inspected her and found she was in heat. If I didnt check her I would never of known. I think you should consider spay/neuter the sooner the better. I thought it was a good idea for me to wait for various reasons 1. I will be on a 2 week vacation in June so I can be home with both of them while they recover 2. Max hasn't lost very many baby teeth so I wanted to wait till more fell out.. no luck, he will have lots pulled at the appt. But I have to watch my girl like a hawke, being in heat and a horny little Max in the house.. I have panties on her and a belly band on him. I am scared and will be really sorry if something happends. |
I have never heard of one of any breed coming in heat before 6 months and have never known of any that came in that soon. Lady didn't come in heat until she was 13 months old and Autumn came in at 8 months. I think 8 months is the earliest I personally have heard of a dog come in heat. I asked a question before about how close two heats in one female can come. All I heard was 6 months. Now Missy's Mom says her little girl came in again at 5 months later. Can dogs come in sooner than that? Sylvia |
There was someone on her in another post that said their dog came into heat at 5 mos. I was told they come into heat usually around their 7th month. |
Oh Jeez! Really???? Bunny is 4 months and I had heard that the average age was 10 months!!! Can anyone confirm that you are supposed to have them spayed BEFORE their first heat cycle? |
I have not heard of any reason why you have to have them spayed before their first heat. I hope its about 10 months I want to wait as long as I can so I can get the baby teeth pulled at the same time. I think I will probably have her spayed after shes had her first heat, |
I am hoping ten months for the same reason about the teeth also. I had Tino neutered at that age and had his baby teeth removed at the same time and it was great bc he only had to go under once! As far as before the first heat cycle for the females, for some reason I think I had heard it reduced mammary cancer (i think) to almost no chance. |
I don't know if dogs are the same as cats, but I just had my persian spayed because she was having more and more frequent heats and she was so "noisy" whenever she was in heat that it was annoying! Someone that I complained about it to told me that if they do't get pregnant they will have their heats more often because they are "trying to get pregnant". I know there is some controversy over the benefits of spaying before they go into heat, but I think with litle yorkies especially, it is okay to let them have a heat because the risks of the surgery outweigh the benefits of spaying earlier. Just what I've heard. My vet may me feel stupid when I said Chai was too young and too small to spay at 5 months, but I have switched vets!! |

I have a little girl Yorkie that is 8 months old. She had her first heat at six. I have been told that Yorkies come in once a year. Is this true. I would like her to have one litter. So do I have a whole year to wate to have the puppies to play with? |

I think I would say and I heard from my vet that from 7 months to a year they go in heat and remember to breed if you want at there 2nd heat! |
how many heats for yorkies per year? I was curious how many heats a yorkie is supposed to have per year. I have three and they all have had just one heat per year. My oldest yorkie, 5 yrs old had emergency surgery this past Thursday for pyrometra(sp), and had her uterus taken out because it was full of liquid. She was running a temp of 103 - that was the only thing that red flagged me. So I'm back at step one with my furbabies. I want only the best for them and so I try to educate myself as much as possible. By the way, the other two girls are being scheduled for spaying as well. how many heats for yorkies per year? :aimeeyork Does anyone know how many heat cycles our yorkies have per year? thanks, Kandis, Lexie, Chloe and Emilee Washington State |
Average is every 6 months from the time of their first heat. Now a second question poses...do you start counting the months at the beginning of a heat or do you start counting the 6 months when the litter is whelped? |
 I thought that Gypsy Rose was very late coming into season but she did and was spayed 2 months later. Our Gizzie Chavi is a year old next month and no sign of a season yet... really wish she'd hurry up , I DO!! LOL :) Ana xx |
What are the signs of going into heat? Do they start doing strange things, and like what? Do they bleed right away? Thanks... |
Roxy - all of them vary I believe - they become swollen "down below" but whether they actually start bleeding straight away I don't know, I would suspect not. Many act differently, become more loving and follow you around more, others I've heard seem unwell for a few days as if they maybe have cramping pains just like we do! I must admit that Gypsy Rose was no different apart from bleeding. I am still waiting for Gizzie to go into season and she's a year old next week! Everyone seem to have said their dogs go into first season "up to a year old" --- what's the oldest age to expect, anyone know?!! I want her spayed and her baby teeth extracted! Ana xx :aimeeyork |
Roxy is almost 7 1/2 months. Her appt. is 7/15 (and her teeth will be pulled as well). TJ, he is 5 1/2 months. I am getting a little worried about them being together. I have noticed she always has her tail up and she plays this game with him. She will take a toy in her mouth and prance around. He follows her like a cat and then he pounces on her to get the toy. She also has been peeing all over the place (normally she is good and only goes on the pads). She is licking herself and he is licking her too! He also sniffs her a lot and he sniffs where ever she had just sat! And I think her nipples? are a little bigger? Sometimes (a lot lately) She chases him like she is going to kill him. BUT NO BLOOD...Is this the start or is this all puppy behavior. I go on 7/8 for their rabbies shots so I will ask the Vet. I just don't want any accidents before next week when she goes in for her spaying! |
1st heat at 10 months My little Kissie is in 1st heat. She is 10 months. I want to breed her but I think that her 2nd o 3rd heat will be the time to do it. What do you think ? I would like to have your opinion about the use of diapers, because she is always in my bed or the sofa. |
heat my baby will be 1 at the end of this month but no cycle yet? is something wrong here? i have wondered about this before and most likely she will not be bred but i still want to know and have even thought of taking her to the vet to be checked. no little doggies around and she's always kept in eyesight but i still wonder just to be safe! |

HI, If you are going to Breed, take this time to read up as much as you can on Breeding. You might want to find a Breeder in your town to talk to. They should not mate on their first heat, it's best for the female to wait at least for the 2nd, and many breeders say 3rd. I'm not a Breeder, this is just what I have heard. Yes, get some diapers, they sell them at Petsmart and Pet Co, even some WalMarts have them now too. Best of luck to you.:) :) :) :) |

If she's healthy I'm sure she's ok. She might have had a very light first heat, or just didn't have one yet. At one year they do go back to the Vets for shots, so if she didn't have a heat by then, just let your Vet know, I'm sure they will know whats going on. But again, if she's healthy don't worry.:) :) :) :) |
heat she's healthy i'm not wanting to breed her any time soon but i have wondered about it! thanks! |
My lil Bailey is 11 months and i dont know if she had her first heat or not, I think i would of noticed because i also have a male jack rusell that is not neutered and he hasnt become crazy or anything apart from licking her down there in a few occations...how can i know? |
3 Month Old Yorkie. My yorkie Chester is going to be 3 months on Saturday the 25th and he already started humping like, 1 week ago? So i don't know. Is that considered being in heat? :/  |
