i went to Petland y'day and got free samples of the AVODerm (never heard of this one but the ingredients looked good) and the Pinnacle. I had never heard of either of these brands but neither have corn, wheat, or byproducts in there. The kibbles are small and i have offered the Pinnacle to the girls but so far, they haven't been interested. I then went to another mom&pop pet store and picked up free samples of Wellness and Nature's Variety Raw Instinct, which is grain free and high meat protein. I haven't tried the girls on any of these yet. They also carried the Merrick's canned dog food. We tried the Chicken Pot Pie last night. My puppy gobbled it down but she had diarreah this morning (probably from changing foods) but my older girls wouldn't touch it. I will just introduce the new stuff gradually to see how they react. I usually just mix in a little beef or chicken into their kibbles and they eat that just fine. They eat the Eagle Pack Holistic Chicken since it has a really tiny kibble. So many of the foods have too large of kibble no matter how good the product is, my girls cannot get their mouth around it! If anyone has any comments on any of these brands, i would appreciate any input. .....Linda |

I'm using three different kinds right now. I use Nutri Source Puppy for Brea cause the bites are so small and it's a good food. I am using Nature's Varitey mixed with Merricks, kibbles in the morning and raw at night for Tinka -Kaya was on the same till her bout with sickness and I switched her to Solid Gold Hund-N-Flock to see if it was allergies to the other foods. When this bag is gone I probably won't buy it again cause her stools are HUGE with this food. |

Slightly overcook rice or couscous the old fashion way in water in a pan on the stove. (No micro-waving) While cooking, add shredded carrots and minced fish or meat. (chicken, beef, turkey) When done, ad 1/2 teaspoon of Olive oil, let cool and ad a food supplement with minerals and vitamins (from either your vet or the pet store) You can precook and freeze portions. Take them out of the freezer the night before and let thaw in the refrigerator. For dogs and cats who only eat dry food if added wet food to it, ad Gerber's baby food to it. For those of you who are too lazy to cook for your pets, give them fat free table scratches AFTER washing it off from salt and sauces. Hope this nightmare will be over soon. Good luck to all, |

Thanks for the info Erin. I think i will just stick to what their systems are used to right now. I am getting Princess spayed on Thursday so i don't want to change anything right now and give her gas or diarreah. She prefers the canned dog food to the kibbles since she has both sets of teeth. That will be fixed Thursday also so she can eat the kibbles easier after that. We have just had her for 2 weeks so we are still getting used to each other and she is still learning our routine. We certainly don't want gassy girls! :D ....Linda |

Wow! I didn't know that about Salmon.....there are a lot of dog products out there that contain Salmon, Salmon oil, etc......(like PetzLife for one)....I will have to do some checking on this and ask our vet.....yikes.....another thing to worry about!! ((eek)) |
To answer PUPPYLUV, yes, I am most familiar with the different brands of dog food. Pick your favorite brand, call the company that makes it and ask to have a tour to see how it's made. They WILL NOT let anyone see their plant with all the dead animal carcasses stacked high, the stench being unbearable and people all wearing gas masks. Sound yummy? |
There's a food called...The Honest Kitchen www.thehonestkitchen.com All ingredients are human grade FDA approved, made in a human food facility, not a pet food plant. You all might want to check that out. It seems pretty good...I'm thinking of looking into it. It looks like this one probably wouldn't have dead animal carcasses and nastiness like that. |
Ruby Ambra Hi thank you for the INFO. I have a very fussy little princess and I hear alot abot these brands, but did not know where to ge6t them. I will email for samples because we have about 8 bags of very high quality dogfood that we will donate to a shelter. It gets expensive after awhile. we would like to put a dish down and see them eat it. Thanks, PRINCESS RUBY AMBRA'S MOM |
Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I went to Care A Lot Petstore today. They have one about 10 minutes from me. I got a big 40 pound dog. Now all 3 of my dogs can eat the same food. I am sooo excited! They had the 40 pound bag on sale for $25 too! Which is great because that is the size I buy for my 97 pound doggy! I will let you know how they like it. The care a lot rep swore by it! |
I'm still feeding natural balance potato & duck. Once in a while I used to feed him some Nutro canned but not anymore! |

I also know if I were to take a tour of a meat packing company I would be a vegetarian. Not to mention growth hormones, E coli, salmonella, recalled meat, deaths... Perhaps I am being naive but why can't there be companies making dog food from meat that isn't diseased or covered in rancid fat? Did you ever notice how many threads there are of people changing their dog's food to one (or several) of the better foods but the dog won't eat it? Jmo, but I do believe it is because the company does not spray it full of junk just to make it taste better. Kind of like getting your kid to eat carrots over french fries. I don't think there is any dog food that is wonderful for our pets but until I'm shown otherwise I will continue to believe the claims of the companies I trust. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. |

Before the recall I started all of mine back to Timberwolf,Bison. I feed 3 pups Joey,2, Boomer,10 and Ally 12+ all the same food and I find they do not need to have any moist added for them to eat it. :aimeeyork |
NUTRO ULTRA DRY....(ADULT SMALL BITES FORMULA) and small amount of Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice ORIGINAL formula canned food. |
I'm sticking with Innova....I think all else is safe in the dry version |

Gucci is still eating Canidae. Just dry food. She doesnt eat moist food. Well I give her once in a while some home made chicken. |
I am really trying to get things together to start cooking for my two. Teddy and my Golden. I made them a pot of food tonight and it was a great success in that they just loved it. My biggest concern is that they get everthing they need while eating my home cooking. I don't want to miss some important ingredient. I started with 5 chicken thighs boiled and then removed from the bone. (They did have the skin but I removed it after boiling and skimmed the fat from the top of the pot.) Then I added brown rice, green beans, shredded carrot and rolled oats. let it simmer until it was thick almost like a canned food consistancy. Put some in thier bowls, let cool and added missing link. The kids were haaaapy and gobbled it all up. So, any of you who know what your doing in the cooking for your babies tell me what you think of my mixture and if I sholuld have done something differently or added something they need that I left out. I really hope I can figure out how to cook for them economically and get rid of the bagged stuff all together. Kim |

perhaps call for a consult with a doggie nutrionalist or ask your regular vet if they can find out for you. they would know best what ingredients your pet needs. i'm not sure how it is with dogs but i know that some people who cook for their cats really end up making a mess of things because they didn't know that cats absolutely need taurine in their diets, among other things, and their cooking did more bad then good. |
