Please Help! Still battling dandruff...I've tried everything! Hobbs STILL has dandruff!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( :( I've tried everything....He eats Canidae All Life Stages (does not contain corn, wheat, barley, rye, dairy, or soy) with Grizzly Salmon Oil (Omega 3&6 fatty acids), I only bathe him once a month and I use Head & Shoulders for Dry Skin shampoo and conditioner, he gets brushed almost daily with a Chris Christensen brush that isn't supposed to hurt his skin. What else in the WORLD can I do for him???   Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. |
sounds to me like the shampoo is the problem. go get some of that mane & tail shampoo and conditioner. It is really cheap and it is for animals. be sure to rinse really well because any residue will build up to look and act like dandruff. Mine get a shampoo about every 4 days. maybe a shampoo more often would help too. I don't know, I am just guessing. I know if I dont' shampoo my hair every day I will start itching too. could be the same type of thing I don't know. Head and shoulders is very harsh on even a human head. I would start there and see what happens. |
Thank you very much. :) :) :) I've tried other shampoos...even one with Emu Oil in it. I'll go get the Mane & Tail and try that, too. Thanks for the input. :) :) :) |
oh how i wish i knew... i feel like i'm reading my own post here... same story for us... doing everything i can... i have no idea what the weather is like in Alabama but i think it is just SO dry here... i try lotion on her belly.. Aveno Baby Oatmeal lotion.. her tummy is so dry i can see the cracks in her skin... i have NO idea what else to do... i've tried oatmeal baths.. they don't do much.. just make her fur really soft! she probably has more omega 3 fats in her than any dog i know... i'm at a loss.. this will be our first full summer with her so i'm HOPING the change in weather helps.. otherwise... geez.. i might have to shave her bald and moisturize like crazy :p |
Maybe it is time for allergy testing... |
Wishing you luck with your baby! Unfortunately I've had Hobbs for over a year now and his did not go away during the summer or fall. WAHHHHHHHH!!!! :( :( :( |

Lex had a bit of that. I used some of my neutrogena t-gel and it cleared up. I now use biogroom natural shampoo on him and he has been fine. I now bathe him and lulu every sunday with no skin problems. |

Sounds like you have tried everything. I wouldn't know what else to do either. I bet you have tried almost every shampoo so I am not sure if changing shampoos or even food will help. My golden retriver had really bad dandruff too when I first got him, the vet gave me some omega fatty acid capsules and that help it, but I know that you are already using omega fatty acid. Has the vet mentioned the possibility of any skin conditions. My friend has a yorkie and hers has a skin condition and she has to use medicated shampoo on him. Good luck. |

His coat is coming in flake-free and silky soft. I feed 1 full teaspoon of missing link (he is almost 3lbs 14oz) each morning with 1 teaspoon cottage cheese and split a fish oil capsule between him and the poodle. Each night, I split open a vitamin E capsule and he licks it right off my hand. They eat Life's Abundace dry kibble with a little Canidae lamb and rice. For us, this is the only thing that worked and I couldn't be happier. I really hope you find a solution too :animal-pa Here is him a few weeks ago. |
Have you tried sea breeze oil. I have never tried it personally but I have ead that it is good stuff. I also remember reading about SheaPet Premium Shampoo and Conditioner, it sounded good to me. I have just ordered Hannah the cranberry field shampoo and conditioner from Beyond Spoiled. The cranberry seeds are supposed to be more theraputic than vit e oil. I haven't recieved it yet but I will let you know how it works. Hannah doesn't really have bad dandruff but she has dry skin sometimes. I have to bath her every 4 -5 days though or she is very greasy and stinky. |
Here is some info on Cranberry Fields that I found. It gets it name because it contains Cranberry Seed Oil, which has 100 times the healing power of Vitamin E oil!!! The shampoo contains cranberry seed oil along with honey extract, shea butter, and soy bean extract making it incredibly therapeutic. While the Conditioner touts Organic herbal extracts of rosemary, comfrey, golden seal, aloe vera, wheat and soy proteins. It's a formula that will leave the coat soft and easy to brush! |
Have you tried Sunflower oil . My vet told me to put on the food . This was for our cat he had a lot of dandruff. It helped.Talk to your Vet about it. |
4 Attachment(s) Hey Rebecca! You know Jaden had the same problem as Hobbs and it is so frustrating  I switched his food to Canidae and we use the grizzly salmon oil just like you do. I've made two changes lately that really seem to be helping him. First, I tried the new shampoo and conditioner Kathryn V has at Beyond Spoiled called "Cranberry Fields" and it is awesome!  After I bathed Jaden and Jewelina in it ZERO flakes and their coats were SUPER shiny!! :) :) I talked with my vet about it and he said to try to use just conditioner on him instead of the shampoo and to do a final rinse with apple cider vinager 1/4 part vinager to water. He also said to add in Lavendar and Chamomile to that final rinse of apple cider vinager and water. Once you rinse them off with this you just leave it, no more water on them after that. So, I've been doing that and now I only use shampoo Jaden when he is really dirty. It's made a world of difference for us! I also always have him in a jacket, shirt something unless it is REALLY hot outside to help protect his skin. Here's some pictures of him and Jewelina after their baths a few days ago.... Hope this helps you! |

Rebecca I would immediately stop using any human products on Hobbs. When I spoke to the 3 different vets Coco had at one time, they all said human shampoos have a different pH balance and will cause dandruff and flakes, not to mention itching. I would switch to an oatmeal based puppy/dog shampoo with conditioner, and keep the salmon oil and food that same. It will take probably about a month to take affect but I'm sure it will. DO NOT use Nutragena, it is the worse and harshest stuff for humans, not to even mention these little guys. There's my $.2  KISSES TO HOBBS |

  This was going to be my suggestion too. A dog's skin is much more alkaline than our own. Human shampoos are designed to be more acid, making them too harsh on pet skin. You should especially not use medicated shampoo on dogs. I've also read not to use baby shampoo. Stick with a pet shampoo -- you may want one especially designed for skin problems until you clear this up. But just getting back to a more alkaline product might take care of it. |
Mane & Tail, shampoo and conditioner are cheap and work great. I used to work on a ranch, and that's what we used, and those horses shined liked crazy. |
Thank you SOOOOOOO much everyone for all your helpful suggestions. I have had Hobbs on Missing LInk in the past to no avail. I will try the Apple Cider Vinegar rinse and switch shampoos. I will try the Cranberry Fields Oatmeal from Beyond Spoiled. Hopefully it will work! I'll keep you guys updated! Thanks again! YorkieTalk is the BEST!!! :) :) :) :) |
Well I decided to use the neutrogena on Lex because nothing else worked including other meds that the vet gave him because he also had a spot of dryness on the end of his ear. So after exhausting all that and spending a ton on other things I decided why not. It took two washings and he is completely cured. The coal tar that is in the neutrogena that helps is also put into dog shampoos. If you check your local store you will find a few dog shampoos with the stuff in it that is made for doggie dandruff. I never use human products on my dogs but this once it was worth it. I spent soooo much money with stuff from the vet and none of it worked. Good luck in figuring out what will help you. |

Thank you. I am sure this situation is kinda like dog foods...whatever is best for your furbaby may not be best for another. I am glad that you found a cure. :) :) :) |
I really think its your food. I would get a lamb based food instead of chicken |

I was reading last night about skin allergies and I read about the sweet potato and duck food. I was going to ask if you had tried that. Good luck with that. |
I always use a bit of oil in the dogs food . It works wonders after about a month. I also feed Natural Balance fish and sweet potato. My newest pup went from snowflake skin to smooth and shiney after about a month or so. |

AWESOME! Thank you so much for that! I am seriously considering changing. |
Where do y'all get your Natural Balance? |
