bathing only once a month? We had Thumper's nails trimmed while we were at Pet Smart today. The groomers up there told us that bathing him once a week is way too much because their skin is not like ours and it will make it dry. I have noticed some flakes but i just thought it was the type of shampoo and plan on changing it. They said we should only give him a bath once a month! I can see him *maybe* going every other week but i can't imagine what he would look like after a month! He gets pretty oily especially on the top of his head. It seems like from what i've read, everyone on here bathes their dogs every week or every other week so that's what came to my mind while they were telling me that. So i just said "oh okay" and thought "i'll just ask them on the message board" lol Also, i read somewhere on here that you should only brush your dog's hair when it's wet. I thought you're supposed to brush it every day though. Does it hurt to brush it when it's dry? |
I used to bathe once a week and I never had a problem with flaking skin but typically I bathe 1-2 weeks. I think once a month is a bit long. I actually went a month once recently (I'm such a bad mommy) because I've been having back issues and I couldn't lean over the tub to wash them and I've boycotted petsmart and petco--even for baths-- since they've butchered my babies in the past. I still brushed them but the hair was a bit oily by the end of the month. They didn't smell and I use pet wipes on them when needed but Max was beinning to feel a bit grimy so I won't wait that long anymore. If I have to pay someone to bathe them when I can't I'll do just that. I also read in a grooming magazine that we should not brush their hair dry because the ends could split. I read that you can use a detangling spray, or leave in conditioning spray when brushing. I'm no expert so I don't know what products are good for this. Perhaps someone else can jump in with some recommendations... |
Thank you! I will look for some conditioning/detangling spray. Whoops, i posted this in the wrong place. I just found the grooming section. :) |
My boy has a true silky coat and by day 4 is oily looking. We pet him too much and that has a lot to do with it. I kiss him all day long too and he is a BOY and lives his life tumbling on the floor playing with his brother and sister (cat and poodle). lol A month would be extremely long for us and I bet he wouldn't stand it. He is bathed once a week with pet wipes (especially his manhood area after he pees) in between. Sometimes he is bathed twice a week if he needs it. He has a beautiful silky coat and I bathe him with petsilk shampoo. |
A once a week bath is a necessity for Toby.....he'd look scraggly and unkempt if I didn't. I use different shampoos on him but always finish his bath with the Petsilk leave in conditioner. I also mix water and some cowboy magic in a spray bottle and lightly spray his hair with it inbetween baths at every brushing........use the same on the maltese. I NEVER brush either of them dry, always use the spray bottle mixture.:) |

Some yorkies are prone to dry skin....you might try doing a vinegar/water final rinse 1 ounce vinegar to 10 ounces of water.....it does great for getting out any residue. My show dogs are bathed every 4 days...None have flaking problems. |
I try to bath Peeka once a week cause i can't stand when he gets all haggared looking tonite is bath night but i can't get off here to go do it lol |

I bathe mine once a week. They would get scraggly looking if I didnt |
Sometimes you have to take what the folks at Petsmart say with a grain of salt. When I first got Sadie at 3 months old, a trainer at Petsmart told me that I should leave her in her crate without food or water when I was at work - that she would get used to it and would stop urinating so much. Now THAT'S just CRAZY!!! I bathe Sadie once a week and use Petsilk Shampoo and Conditioner. Over a week, and she looks VERY greasy. |
I've been told by a couple of show exhibitors...bathe once a week. A healthy coat is a clean coat and that goes for the same with skin. Just some skin is more sensitive than others. |
We do once a week too. I take him to the groomer every 4 weeks (I keep him very short) and do nails and trim his pads and face after each bath. I use Cloud Star shampoo & conditioner. We LOVE IT. It's lavender scented and does not dry out his skin at all. He is so fluffy after a bath. People who tell you to bathe less than every 2 weeks must not have Yorkies! :D |
Okay well i'm not going to do what they said. I'm going to keep giving him a bath once a week. :) |
Just adding my :twocents: here. I bathe Sissy once a week and if I go an extra day or two, she looks disheveled and greasy. We use Buddy Wash & Buddy Rinse along with the conditioning spray. I haven't used the spray regularly, but will begin as she has had lots of breakage, particularly where her hair gets done up. Oatmeal products are recommended for dry skin. I know that Petsilk has an oatmeal formula. Dry skin can also be from allergies, so check your food for corn or other known allergens as well. Good luck!! |

Mine all play fight all day long and get their saliva on each other. Ben, especially starts looking straggly after 3-4 days. So, they are getting a weekly bath and sometimes more if they need it. There are lots of in between clean-ups too -- especially the eyes, chins, and behinds. I also use Cowboy Magic detangler diluted with water for brushing. That sort of cleans them up a little too. |
My vet told me not to bathe Buddy every week because his skin can become dry and flaky. I bathe Buddy every other week and have started using Pantene Shampoo w/ conditioner. It is amazing what it does for the coat. Even before using it Buddy never, never had an oder to him. He always smells fresh, however he does not run and play outside. I walk him so he never rolls in dirt. I also use Ice on Ice for added shine. In the past I used Pet Silk shampoo and conditioner. It was ok but not as good as pantene for 1/3 the cost! Is this Pantene for humans your using??? I need a good shampoo for Blaine, he has so much hair and it seems like the petsilk only keeps him looking clean for 2 to 3 days, I tried baby johnson & johnson shampoo but that dries him out, and I've basically tried every other puppy shampoo sold at petco and nothing works as good as petsilk but petsilk again doesn't keep him looking clean very long, he doesn't go outside much except for his daily walk and he walks, no tumbling or rolling around in dirt like Sabrina does, he's good on his walks, and the only playing he likes to do in the house is fetch or chase a remote control car I got for him, I know remote control car sounds crazy but he loves the toy and he can't bite it or swallow it, the most he does is jump on it and tries to flip it over like it's a dog or something...anyway I jumped way off subject, lol. |
I just bought some pantene for Peeka today it is the ice fomula for shine i also bought a conditioner and leave (big bottles) all for $10.00:eek: it costs me that much for one bottle of dog shampoo:eek: i will try it tonight |
I am curious about the vinegar use also. My puppies have eye stains and I need some help with that. |

I use Johnsons baby bath and shampoo on Sonia about once a week or she will get (greasy) or oily on her head..I call her a little rag...LOL My orphan Yorkie... It makes me feel comfortable expecially when im getting rid of the tears. I blow dry her then brush her hair and she is a ball of fluffy baby smell....:) |
I bathe Gucci at least once a week. I don't let it pass 2 weeks without a bath. I use Tresseme and so far her skin is not flaky and her hair is nice. Thanks for the advise about the vinegar and water. :) |

I use Biogroom for dogs and it's the best stuff I've used so far. I've tried every expensive, and cheap and mid priced dog shampoo out there. This one is by far made for yorkie coat. It leaves her shiny, smooth and smells great for like 4 days. I bath her once to twice a week and she's never had flaking itchiness or any other problems. She starts smelling like carpet fibers if I don't bathe her once a week  |
