Shots Tomorrow, I have to take Charlie in to get his 3rd round of shots. I asked the vet about having the Rabies shot later and not having them together. I have heard some scary things about getting the last round of shots. The second set was not that bad, he did really well. What can I expect? I tried to find a vet that specialized in small breeds, but I did not find anything in my area (Reno, NV). Is there any precautions that I should take or anything that I should know before I take him in? |
There have been reports of vaccinations being useless for dogs, but usually if he does fine the first few rounds, it should be okay the third round as well. Here's the post from the FAQ: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...3438#post63438 |

I just wanted to say hi as I live in Carson City!! Hi! |
Just wanted to wish Charlie well on his shots! I hope everything goes well! |
thanks guys, I feel better about taking him in. I'm sure he will do fine, but I'll let you know if I find anything else out. |
my vet does not give the shots all together also she gives them a shot of benadryl just in case he has a reaction to the shots scrappy had a reaction last year when he got his shots so now they give him a shot of benadryl also i just switched vets because my other vet was on maturnity leave and the feel in vet was gonna give scrappy all his shot i refused and left and found a new vet and the staff are very loving and caring . :) |
hi, guys and girls I would like to know how many shots usually for my 4 months old Cash has to take?? coz one of my fds she has one 4 1/2 months old female, she only went to the vet and took 3 shots and that's all..I am wondering is this true?? or more shots they have to take?? |
Charlie did well today!!!! No Yelping this time, he hardly even noticed it!!! :happyboun :happyboun Cash_BB: I don't know what is typical, but Charlie got 2 shots today. He would have gotten 3, but I did not let the vet give him his rabies yet b/c I did not want it to be too much for him all at once. The vet actually said that he would not have given him all three at the same time any way cause he's so little. I checked to make sure that the vet did not give him any Lepto, and he said that the manufacture that he uses takes it out of the puppy vaccinations. This isn't true with all manufactures, so double check with your vet. He said the dogs only need it if they are out on the "range" animals. It is transmitted in water where infected animals have urinated. Also, he said that if your baby has a hard time with the shots that you can give 1/2 baby tylenol. |
Mandee......I also took my 12 week old Mackenzie to get her second set of shots today ...my vet does not give Lepto either..I also told him not to give her the rabies shot now, because I didn't want her to have to deal with too much at one time. She did fine getting the shot...she got it around 3:15....but now she is not feeling too well...she wont let me touch her in the area that she got the shot...she yelps badly if I do :( .....I guess she seems sleepier then usual too...I suppose this is to be expected. The vet said she might not seem like herself for maybe 24 hrs :( I hate seeing her like this..she looks so sad :cry8: I hope she will be ok... |
Neecy... I am sure she will be okay. Charlie had a harder time with his second set too. Try the baby tylenol if she is really whimpy. Hugs and kisses from Charlie and Bella. |
Thanks Mandee :D She seems to be doing a little bit better, at least she still has her appetite....Can I use the liquid baby tylenol?..how much do you think I can give her of that...she is tiny...1 lb 7 oz |
We had our third set of shots today but also got the rabies. She did wonderful and I never heard a single whimper. She hasn't seem a bit different than any other day. Hope we don't have problems later. |
Lily's mommy,Thats great to hear! :)....Mackenzie did great getting the actual shot...she didnt even budge....but now...shes so sad....she squeals if you touch her the wrong way :( ......how much does your baby weigh? |
oh...then do u know what is Bordetella, Corona Virus and DHLPP LA are coz my baby will get these all at once next week...Thanks |
Hey Cash_BB- Pups get a number of shots... most def not just three. I can think of a few that Mojito has gotten or will get: DA2PPV Rabies (Required in NYS) Kennel cough (Bordetella) Take a look at the link below just to get an idea (this is the vet I take Mojito to but different vets choose to give shots at different times) I would also say that you should feel comfortable with your vet. If you're (even slightly) questioning her/his actions, move on to someone else... Best of luck!!! Mojito & Irmi |
Neecy, Lily is a little butterball!! She Weighed 4 lbs. at almost 4 months |
Shots are always a risk - I feel the more you can space things out the better. Keep in mind the same 1cc vaccination they give your baby is the same vaccination they are giving the 100lb Mastiff! |
Neecy: I don't know about the liquid kind. I think that it may be absorbed faster, but I don't know how much to use. I would suggest looking at the amount (mg) of both the liquid and the pills to see how much active medication is in each, and then calculate how much to give her. I might even use less cause she is so small. I hope she is doing better tonight. |
Thanks a lot ...Mojito & Irmi..and by the way u guys live in BKLYN?? |
I took pxie last week for her last round of shots and i was a little nervous about giving the rabies shot to her so young... but my vet said that if she was good with the other rounds of shots she will be fine and she was fine. She had no reaction to the rabies shot at all so0 dont woRriEe :) |
Shot Reactions What sort of reactions have you seen with yorkies after vaccinations? Posie is 1 yr. 3 mos. and just had her annuals (rabies, distemper, bordetella). I didn't have her when she got her puppy vaccinations, so I don't know how she reacted, but she is lethargic, eats very little, has no energy and is not acting at all like herself. I called the vet but they said to take her in for them to watch (I said no, she gets scared and shakes when we enter the vet's office) and take her temperature. It has been 48 hours! Shouldn't she be getting back to normal? She doesn't yelp when I touch her or indicate that there is soreness, although she won't jump on the couch or bed. So, maybe she is sore. Any suggestions? I stayed home with her all day today to make sure she didn't get any worse. Should I take her to the vet? The emergency vet told me that it recently took her dachschund 2 days to get over the shots. |
This is a good thread. Chewy is getting his last round of shots tomorrow and I'm not sure whether to do the rabies as well. I'm going to contact the breeder to see how he did with his other shots. I know that they aren't supposed to get Lept, but I've heard that they shouldn't get Corona either. Does anyone know about this? |
I am by no means an expert but when Teddy got his shots a few weeks ago and showed signs of reaction I called to ask about the tylenol and also baby aspirin and was told not to give either but to instead give him benadryl at the rate of 1 cc per pound. |
shot reaction Posie has finally come out of it. She is eating again and playing and jumping around. It took nearly 72 hours for her to get back to normal after the shots on Monday. I stayed home with her yesterday and she was doing so well this morning that I left her alone and had my in-laws check on her. I am so relieved! Thank you for your support! |
I wish I would have known all of this before my Linus got his shots. We got his first set when he was with his breeder, and he got a Corona shot. Then we took him to our vet 3 weeks later, and he got Lepto and Corona. Then we took him in again and he got every shot but rabies and distemper. But on his last set, he's getting Bordetella, Parvo, and Rabies, but it's getting split up into 3 different shots (he does fine when he gets them but our vet refuses to give him all that at once). Does it just sound like my baby got WAY overvaccinated? :( |
Starsky just got his 3rd set of shots too. The vet won't give him his rabies until the top grown up teeth come in. She thinks they may be in 2 to 3 weeks or so. Has anyone heard of this? |
I have heard of that too...but my vet is going to give him his anyway...I know that sometimes they won't alter them until them because they don't want to anestisize them more than once. |
Lexi just got her thord round of shots as well this past weekend but I asked about rabies and the vet said we still had to wait. She was still too little and wanted the adult teeth to come in. She hasn't even lost her first baby tooth. She is only 15 weeks, is she really too younge for the rabies shot? |
