Great formula for hypoglycemia Thought I'd share this, as I credit the advice I got for saving Luna's life. As most of you probably read, Luna got very very sick the second night we had her. She'd stopped eating and was vomiting. We had to rush her to the emergency vet clinic for sub q fluids and heat support. She was discharged the following morning and saw the vet the petstore referred us to. The vet gave her sub q fluids again and told me to give her 1 tsp. of Nutrical every hour on the hour. So we were doing that, hubby and I taking turns forcing it into her mouth:( She wasn't coming around and I was so scared! She just kept vomiting and then going back to sleep. So back to the vet again the next morning (on a Sunday, that impressed me a little) for more sub q fluids and antibiotics for a nasty respiratory infection that she had going. Meanwhile, I'm in contact with a great breeder a few hours from me. I write her what's going on and she offers to help. God bless her, because I think her advice helped save Luna's life. The nutrical wasn't doing a thing for her, except turn her into a sticky mess, and she'd vomit it up anyway. She was lethargic and her ears were cold, gums very light pink and gray. She had me mix up the following formula, to feed via syringe. After forcing the first 2 cc's into her,she kept it down and 20 minutes later she was up and bouncing around, lol! After that, no more syringe, but she wanted it off my finger. Then she graduated to eating from a little bowl. Only problem is, she's now a little picky about food, but she's alive, and healthy. This produced nice firm stool from her by the way. I still give her the baby mixture right before bedtime (about midnight for us) and she gets through the night on a belly full of that;) 1/2 cup half and half 1/2 cup baby rice cereal 1 jar meat baby food, anything but turkey 1 tsp. karo or pancake syrup Mix together and add a little water if it's too thick for the syringe. Give approximately 2-4 cc's every hour (depending on size), then when the pup is doing better, you can increase the amount and decrease the frequency. After a day or two of this, as long as they are eating this on their own, gradually add softened kibble or canned food and slowly decrease the baby mixture until they are eating the food. Should take a week or so to do the change, to avoid upsetting their tummy. She told me to keep checking her gums, that they should look like a humans, dark pink to red, and her ears should feel warm, not cold at all, . If I saw gray in her gums, I was to feed immediately and if no improvement in 1/2 hour, to get her to the vet again. And I was told also to keep her warm, so we took turns holding her against our bodies. I swear, without this help, Luna wouldn't have made it. Just thought that I'd share, in case anyone else goes through this. |
Thanks for posting this. I am glad to hear that Luna is now going great. |
Thanks I wrote it down and will keep it in my notebook with all other info I have accumulated, on yorkie care. |
Thanks for the life saving info. I will save this-might save somebody else too! I'm glad Luna is better now! |
Great information!! Glad you baby's doing better! |
Thank you for that....will need it incase for when my next baby comes |
That is a great formula i have put it in my folder |
I'm bumping this up for all the new Yorkie baby parents. Saved my baby, might help save another:thumbup: |
Great recipe the one I used was similar does your luma have a open fontale? |
No, her head is hard as a rock:laugh: Thank God, we had enough drama going on here without one more thing to worry about. Does your baby have that? |
No ,mine doesn't either but it seems alot of them that quit eating have it. But I suppose now will probably find that lot of them don't. Mine wouldn't eat for like 2 1/2 weeks. Then after that for the next month I was parnoid. I made sure she was eating and eating good. Now she is 6 month old and you never know she had a eating disorder...... lol |
 Yep, they call it "anorexia" on the vet's charts, when they won't eat:rolleyes: That's so funny to me, cuz it's not like they really choose not to eat, it's that there's something wrong in their tiny little world. |
Yes that is pretty funny. |
this is great recipe, thank you. I am pretty sure it'll be of use ... thanks btw for your sweet replies to my post. And i'm really glad luna is doing better. how old is she now? also love the name luna, if i had a girl that was my first choice of names. lol |
Awww, shucks:o Thanks:D Luna is now 4 and 1/2 months old, and eating like someone's going to take it away from her:laugh: She's doing great and I couldn't be happier! |
I wish this thread was a sticky in the sick section |
ME too - I've referred people to your post with that recipe and had to search it out - that would be a great sticky ! |
Thanks for bumping this up. I missed it the first time around. I've copied it and saved it as well. Very valuable advice! You never know when you may need it. |
Shamelessly bumping for all the new puppy owners:aimeeyork |
Thanks for the recipe.... I will most definately write it down and put it in my recipe book. |
Thanks for the info, and glad you little one is ok. |
Well, it's been over a year since I posted this. You'd never ever know that Luna had problems eating when we first got her, she's a little chow hound now:laugh: The thing that really kicked her eating into high gear was getting Izzy:laugh: She wasn't about to let her eat all the food:D I feel so blessed that my little tiny girl is thriving, she is just under 4 lbs now at 15 months old and looks like she's 2 lbs:laugh: Such a healthy bouncy girl, except she spins a lot. I believe she may have suffered some neurological damage due to her sugar being so very low for the first couple of days I had her:( She's still smart as a whip, and fast too, the only reason I can catch her, I think, is because sometimes she can't stop spinning:p Anyway, just wanted to bump this up once again for any new Yorkie owners that may have gotten a new puppy for the holidays. Happy New Year! |
Great thread. I agree with Chachi and V, this would be a great sticky! So happy that you updated us on Luna! It's wonderful that she's doing so well! I think more people should go back to their threads from a year ago, and update us all on what has happened since. I'd love reading those threads! |
bumping for new puppy owners;) |
thank you for posting this, I saved it in my yorkie things! |
Thanks so much for posting this! |
Okay most of you know Diggy also suffered (s) from Hypoglycemia. He had multiple seizures as a baby and was VERY touch and go for a month or so. SO here is what I fed him. Feed EVERY 2-3 hours (set alarm thru the night even) even if they eat just 3 bites its SOMETHING Give cherrios I offer 2-3 every 30 minutes at least. his food was A meat (chicken, beef, turkey) or 1/4 jar of meats babyfood a chopped up fresh veggie 1 egg a lil cheddar cheese or cottage cheese table spoon of cooked rice crushed kibble can be used instead of meat (at 2 am sometimes I didnt feel like cooking fresh meat) just a warning most of this food i cooked went to waste you can only heat up so many times ..... I was big on giving complex carbs that break down into sugar slower that a dose of Kayro or Nutrical which tend to give them a high then a low (when given alone) but when all else fails ya have to use the sugary stuff. The OP's recipe is AWESOME wish I had had it when Diggy was sick...I am certain he got sick of my offerings and mixing it up a bit would have a great alternative. :D :D :D :D |
I think this needs to be bumped for any new tiny or puppy owners. Nutracal is great stuff, it can save your baby's life, but it's not meant to be given repeatedly, it's more like an emergency thing. Honey or Karo syrup work just as well, and the most important thing is getting REAL food into them after the nutracal, otherwise it can make things worse. Hard to believe that my baby girl Luna is now over 2 years old and such a good eater:) She's leveled out at 4.5 lbs and I just can't imagine my life without her (and my Izzy too!) |

Might as well bring this to the top again for any new tiny puppy parents. :) |
