Reverse sneezing

I've read thread after thread and comment after comment about reverse sneezing and still was not prepared when Carter had a prolonged attack this morning.

Until this morning, he had never had a single reverse sneeze.

We just returned last night from saying "so long" (instead of goodbye) to my Marine son that is heading for the Syrian border in Iraq. This was the first time that Carter flew in an airplane.

When my daughter took Carter and Cooper out to potty at 6 AM this morning, she brought Carter to me and told me he started doing "this" while outside.

This attack seemed to last forever. It was similar to an asthma attack, I guess. The sound was awful. His mouth was closed and he seemed to have trouble breathing. 15 minutes into his attack, I finally called his vet and miraculously, the attack stopped as soon as she answered her phone.

Carter's vet said that the soft palette "flips" and until it rights itself, the attack will continue. She gave me a tip though in case it ever happens again -- she said to try to get him to lick water off your fingers to make him swallow and that should end the attack. She also said that because of the dry cabin air from the plane that it could have helped to spur this attack.

What a way to begin the morning. With all the emotions we're dealing with after visiting my son this weekend, my furbaby almost scared me to death. I was really afraid I was going to lose Carter this morning. I'm praying that the next 12 months will be uneventful for all of my children -- my skin children and furbabies.

It IS scary - I gently close their nostrils when mine do this - I hold and release... hold and release... till they take a breath thru their mouth.

You did have a tough morning and I hope all your kids stay safe ....bless you - it can be so hard being a mom sometimes...but worth every second.

I still haven't "dealt" with my son leaving for Iraq yet. I held it together this weekend so that we could all just have a "normal" weekend. My son left from my daughter's house yesterday morning early so that he wouldn't have to see his little sister (my 15 yo). He didn't want anyone to wake up because it would have been harder on him. He really did Courtney a huge favor also because she doesn't take these kinds of things well at all.

His dad and stepmom are still there as are my daughter and her family that live an hour from where my son is at Camp LeJeune. They will see him again this afternoon and will have supper with him on his final night in the states. I'm torn because I would want to be there to see him up to the last moment but we couldn't stay any longer since Courtney started her final exams today. It may have been a blessing that we had to leave yesterday -- saying goodbye to everyone at once would have been more difficult on him.

Keep my son in your prayers. He will be on an Iraqi base - not with a lot of US Military personnel. There are only 10 people on his "team" and their mission is to train the Iraqi staff how to man their border. I'll keep the forum updated as we find out information. We don't expect to hear from him for at least a month.

And my yorkie does that, too. I usually rub her neck while it's happening. I know it's scary.

Oh that must have been so scary! I'm glad everything is okay though. Ginger does that too and i get scared for my life if anything happened to her. i always try to rub her throat and it usually stops.. or i look at something suspiciously to catch her attention and it usually stops.

For your doggy, Press your finger in the roof of his mouth. Not down his throat but towards the back. You will push the soft palet back up.

No one knows what is like to be a Mom until they have mothered a child I can only imagine how difficult it is for you right now.

I am sorry to here that Carter has reverse sneezing syndrome. I was scared silly when Genie first did it, I thought she was choking at first then I heard about the other disease that small yorkies get(I forgot the name now) and I thought she had that.
Finally I took her to the vet and he gave me a report on this syndrome and I realized this is not that serious at all.
Genie is five months old now and the sneezing stop altogether about 3 weeks ago, she hasn't had any other episode. The vet said it could stop and not come back again.
I know how scay it is...
Hope Carter gets well and the sneezing stops.
You and your son shall be in my prayers since I also have a son that is in the military (23 yers old).

Don't mean to plagerize, but you really did express what I wanted to say! I cannot imagine what it would be like have child go to war. With Memorial Day upon us, we will remember all of those who sacrifice for our country.

Glad to hear Carter is doing well.....My greyhound, Lori (RIP) did this often and it did sound like an asthma attack!!!!!! I never had any idea what it was...but it always passed.

Now, Lil Bit does it occasionally..and only briefly, thank goodness.

As for your son and family......You will all be in my prayers....this is sooooo difficult and scary for everyone!

When you do have an opportunity to speak with your son please tell him I said...."THANK-YOU" for all he is doing for me and my family!!!!! I grew up in an Army family and my brother was full Army for almost 22 years.....the sacrifice they make is sooooo great. The months and months and sometimes YEARS of being away from home and the terrible conditions they must endure. My brother was in Saudi Arabia for 1 year during "Desert Storm' and the stories he tells make me soooo proud of him. I worried for him, but also knew how well trained and prepared he was....before he left home we went to visit and I stood with him at the sink, talking while he cleaned his GAS MASK!!!!!
Protecting this country and MY FAMILY is a very noble and honorable thing to do.......I truly do thank him!!!!!

Having online friends has really helped me in the last 24 hours. My husband is away at work until next week so I don't have his shoulder to lean on right now. Sharing with all of you has helped me cope in ways you can't begin to imagine.
