Throwing Up... Do your Yorkies throw up? If so, how often? It seems Yoda throws up every 2 to 3 weeks, and sometimes we just can't figure out why (no change in diet, he didn't eat any weird things from outside). It's usually just yellow bile that he throws up. We just feel bad for the little guy when he does throw up. He didn't have any mad dashing or lots of running around this morning when he did throw up. Do you think it's possible to train a Yorkie to throw up in a certain area as well? Yoda puked all over our bed this morning, we'd much prefer him to throw up on the vinyl flooring in the kitchen. |
Awww, poor Yoda! I don't know if you can train them to do that in a certain area, but stranger things have happened! Tia has thrown up once, on her first outing in her carrier. Sandy has been sick once since we've had her as well - it was that yellow stuff too :( |
The odd time one of my dogs has thrown up it always seems they like do it on a carpet or soft surface like bedding or a blanket... I even had a whole house of hardwood floors once and my dog when she had to puke would run to the stairs the only surface with carpet and throw up on them. I think the only thing you would be able to do is when you hear him start to throw up rush him if you can to the lino. Hears wishes that Yoda has no more upset tummy problems! |
toby has thrown up on our bed, but that was only because my fiance was playing with him and tossing him in the air right after he just ate  .... i think he has puked 2 or so times other than that...... but it was always outside |
This is such PERFECT timing for your thread. Schatzie threw up yesterday while laying with me on the couch. It was as you mentioned, yellow bile. She ALSO does this about every 2-3 weeks and nothing seems to be the cause for it. I at times wonder if it's pollen in the air, just normal digestive things taking place; Like maybe they want to burp but can't like us humans or whatever? I find her in great health and kinda stopped worrying as she seems to have no ill affects from her little episodes. As in regarding to "train" to puke in the right spot, good luck and let me know how it works. Schatzie seems to always find the rug or blanket on the couch. |
Bella threw up Monday morning and I took her to the vet and she had become dehydrated from the throwing up. They did some blood test but I don't have the results back. They told me to ALWAYS worry when a tiny dog throw up. I am thinking it was something in the air or that she ate since we went to a park for my son's soccer game, but I don't know yet. Don't you worry when yours throw up? I don't want to go through what I did Monday with her every time is she is going to throw up on a regular basis |
my vet suggest pepto when up set stomach 1/4 teaspoon every 4/6 hrs. and if persist give some pedelite, and cruched ice cubes to re- hydreate :) |
If they are throwing up yellow bile it usually means the stomach is to empty. I always make sure mine eat something before bed or in the morning a couple will be sick. Not all of them do this some seem more sensitive than others. Yucky stuff too when the throw this up. |
Interesting CC's. Come to think of it, I think Yoda really didn't eat much on Tuesday. That makes a lot of sense actually, too, since once in a while, Yoda will eat less. The throwing up also seems to happen when his Mommy is stressed out a bit and usually he does throw up in the morning too. Thanks for all the good info! :) |
Wow...I'm always amazed at how many people out there have yorkies like my Zoey! Zoey is a puker, too! Probably at least once a month, she pukes. Sometimes, she will actually puke food, though (even if it is her regular diet food), but mostly the yellow stomach fluid. Sometimes it comes out a bit foamy (anyone else's pup do that?). I was never sure what to do with it either....and let me know if you figure out how to train your pup, because Zoey's puked on my covers more than once! |
fastEddie==in my opinion Yoda shouldn't throw up so often;my yorkies seldom do;except sometime when pregnant;but again they all have access to outside grass which they eat occasionally for upset stomach;I would talk with your vet ;and maybe you can narrow down the cause;possibly something brought in on your shoes ; hug Yoda for us and tell him we're thinking about him !! jerry |
You guys make me so glad mine aren't pukers! Leila did it occasionally her first year (and yup, on the bed too!) but hasn't really since. |
Hmmm I though it was just Lucy! She throws up every couple of months, yellow bile etc and now you mention it it does seem to be if she has not eaten much. I wondered maybe she hasn't eaten if not feeling well then thrown up yellow bile because she has not benn eating? She gets quite travel sick though, which is a shame as she loves the car :( |
Diesel has thrown up a couple of times also! I have noticed that this usually happens when he refuses to eat his food some mornings. I have now started giving Diesel a little bit of honey when he doesn't want to eat, (I might drizzle a little on his food also), and a few minutes later he is better and eating again. I hope this helps. :) Reagan :) |
white foam My Little yorkie "Andy" sometimes throws up a white foamy vomit.does anyone know what causes this? I am concerned because i had a yorkie i adored, her name was "Annie" and she also used to do this, she also had the trachael collapse. Many times she passed out and i would revive her, but one day i was away for an hour and when i came home she was in severe distress and there was white foamy vomit in several places..I lost her that day and it KILLED me.. i still miss her and its been almost 8 years. My sons gave me "Andy" as a Christmas present a year after i lost my "Annie" Any help you can give me is really appreciated |

I'm very sorry about your little Annie, I know she's in a better place now. But Oreo does this too, should I be worried? he does it let's say once every 2-3 weeks.. small little spots of foamy white stuff, not a lot.. very little... how does tracheal collapse sound on a dog? I'm scared because Ginger always breathes funny, but it goes away.. and she does this every other week. it scares me! |
My Andy didn't have this white foam vomit until after he was 5 years old and he has just recently been showint the signs that Annie did for tracheal collapse. If he gets excited he begins to breathe fast, then he starts a rasping sound in his throat and he starts to cough. The more excited he gets the worse he gets. Annie was afraid of storms and she would do this mostly when it was thundering and lightning. My vet gave me a small pill to give her to sedate her when it stormed. Andy has started to be afraid of storms lately too and he over breathes when it is storming.I feel he has the same thing Annie did.The white foam vomit started after Annie was 5 too.I always wondered if it had something to do with the tracheal collapse,so seeing this same thing in Andy is a great concern for me.maybe one symptom has nothing to do with the other? Maybe the white foam vomit is just signs of an upset stomach but as i said..the day Annie died there was alot of this white foam in the room. |
Ginger too does that weird noise when she get too hyper.. hmm im scared now lol. |
Pebbles does that sound too - seems like I read somewhere about "reverse sneezing." If I'm wrong about the terminology - I apologize, but I think that's right. Whatever website I read from said to rub their throat gently & it will stop...so far that has worked for Pebbles. |
Oh wow, you mean Josie's not the only one. She always throws up and it's the yellow bile and it's about every two weeks and always on my blankets or bed. I get really concered and scared for her but, once it's over and she seems fine and just starts to play like nothing ever happened. |
Hi Pip has just thrown up but I have just got in from work and I let him out for a wee then gave him a bonio and he gulped it down then snatched some dried food from his bowl and must have gulped that down too. I haven't known him throw up before but nice to know it's normal if others do it too!! :D |
throwing up Hi, I'm new to this forum having recently added a Yorkie to our household and have a question that I will post separately. However, I saw the question about throwing up and wanted to respond... I also have a Lhasa. She throws up yellow bile quite frequently - usually in the morning on an empty stomach. I confirmed this with my vet. He suggested keeping some kibble in my bedside table and to give her a couple pieces first thing in the a.m. - especially if I plan to lounge a bit. This has stemmed quite a few puking episodes! Hope this helps. |
I dogsit a shi tzu (sp?). When she was younger she was prone to throwing up when she hadn't eaten. Similiar to Yorkies, this breed has sensitive tummies. As someone mentioned above, empty tummy = yellow bile. This dog wouldn't eat the first day that I dogsat, but never threw up. Maybe her kibble that I gave her by hand as treats was enough to keep her tummy quiet. Now, with my own 6 mo old yorkie, I keep a bit of kibble in his bowl all the time. LOL, kinda lost my train of thought with the noise that started up outside. Oh yea, training to puke in a certain spot.... Dogs seem to have a difficult time focusing on anything but this automatic reaction that their body is having at the time to try to decipher what you're telling them. Even if you say "Good Boy!" after they've thrown up in a desired location, I imagine that the dog is still absorbed into what just happened to them and what's now in front of them (the bile) and maybe even a little scared. :( I would refrain from picking up a dog to remove it from, say, the bed while it's tummy is having spasms! Have always layed the nearest magazine in the target area hoping that stuff would land on it. Of course, you can't do that if you're not around or awake. Just my thoughts and trying to see it from a dog's point of view. :p |

My Schnauzer has always been a puker. From day 1. My vet said he just has a quirky stomach. He throws up bile sometimes and sometimes it's his whole supper. Since I've had him on Flint River Ranch white fish and potatoe dog food his puking has decreased about 90%. My vet told me I could give him pepcid on a regular basis to ease his stomach also. You might check with your vet to see if this could be done with a Yorkie. Good luck and sorry to hear when any of our babies don't feel well. |
It might be that he has a lowgrade Camby that coes and goes. Look at the posts under my name for Update on Feliz. Once I began treatment the throwup stopped. =-) |

About a month ago mickey was puking that yellow bile stuff everywhere and I rushed him to the vet and they said he must have gotten into something but I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Well at lunch today I found a little bit again in his cage. Then I noticed your post today so maybe its common for yorkies  |
Heidi throws up yellow bile once in a while and if it persists the vet gives her a can of special food which takes care of it, he said see has gastritous. The food settles her stomach in about a day. S/W |
Yes! you are NOT alone. my yorkie has thrown up a yellowish bile as well. i have NO idea why he does this either. its only happened about 3x within 4 months. the 3rd time was a little scary and i took him to the emergency vet to see if he was okay and he was perfectly healthy.....i dont think you should worry too much... and i doubt you can train them where to throw up....i guess they just feel sick and when u gotta throw up---u just do it regardless where it is. good luck! |
I looked up white vomit. I only found 3 things. 1. Collapsing trachea 2. Poisoning- liver damage 3. A dog with Kennel Cough will develop a coarse, dry, hacking cough about five to ten days after being infected. It sounds as if the dog needs to "clear it's throat" and the cough will be triggered by any extra activity, drinking water, exposed to change of temperature or exercise. Many dogs that acquire Kennel Cough will cough every few minutes, all day long. They will wretch and sometimes vomit a white foamy looking matter. I know there is a type of mop/cleaning fluid that is on the market that contains radiator fluid, and can be absorbed through the skin, and is very toxic even once dry on the floor (I will not name names). I only use bleach, pinesol, ammonia, murphy's oil soap and simple green. I would say goto a vet asap. Good luck, and my thoughts go with you. Deborah |
