Grass eating?

It seems like every time I'm outside with Bentley he starts eating grass. Not when I just let him out to do his business but if I'm sitting outside with him on the porch he starts eating grass. Do you think he has a vitamin deficiency or something? What's up with grass eating?

usually they eat grass when they have stomach issues , like there tummy hurts, all dogs do it sometimes , my lap/pitt does at times not as much anymore

oh this is what i heard a long while back and i think its true when they have upset stomach they usually eat it, unless they just wanna eat it just to eat it at times

Roxy east grass, weeds, anything outside. I really think it is at the top of her food pyramid. She eats so much, her poop is green and stinks like old, wet silage or something. She has never had an upset stomach or thrown up. She grabs a mouthful while she is running. Sometimes she looks like she is chewing gum when she get a tough piece and gnaws on it. I gave up worrying. She is as healthy as can be. She still gets her protien with all the bugs and worms she can get away with. I do try to keep an eye on that, but she catches them on the run and they are gone before I can get to her. YUK! PTWEY! YUK! She also digs like a prarie dog huge deep holes and pulls at the large roots in the ground. When she get her nose down in the hole, she snorts like a pig. I got one bag of dirt to fill the holes, now I have to get another. Does anyone else's baby do this? It's like an obsession. She will actually lure me to one side of the yard and scoot to the other to dig!

Logan chews on grass, but I'm not sure he actually swallows it. I notice him doing it a lot if I'm outside talking to someone so I think it's just something to occupy his time or because he likes the taste.

Logan will dig, but only when I start the hole. I was pulling up old plants & I was digging down to get these nasty roots out & I got tired & stopped & he proceeded to continue digging & I was able to remove the roots. He's my gardening buddy.

Way to go Logan. Now if you could teach him to pull weeds, you'd be all set. I sure don't have to start hers. I wish I had some trees to plant, now that Roxy had dug so many big, deep holes. She can fit into these holes. It's just so funny when she get snorting like a pig, sticks her head out of the hole and her face is covred w/dirt and she has a root or rock in her mouth. She is definitely not a prissy little girl.

romeo eats grass and he's totally healthy. i just make sure there are no pesticides or chemicals in his play area.

I agree. I had to spray garbage cans one time so I kept Roxy away from that area until I had mowed and we had a good rain. She eats there now - no ill effects. Just make sure there is fox tail grass or nite shade. Probably ought to check for some other bad plants, depending on where you live. I really think some dogs just plain like eating grass.

Grass helps their digestive system. They sell wheatgrass plants at Petsmart. They are plants you can purchase for your dog to eat. I thought about getting some for Kiki because he eats grass also. But, knowing him he won't pay attention to it and still only eat the grass outside.

He never chews on what I want him to chew on.

OOPS!!! Absolutely NO foxtail or niteshade. Very deadly to dogs.

I can relate to you b/c Jerome does that too, except for te digging, but also when I take him for a walk he eats grass!! I think he is going to pee and then he just bites a big chunk of grass and starts eating so fast that I hardly have time to take it out of his mouth.

I asked the surgeon this question and he said it was a fallicy, but when Gucci was feeling ill with her stomach she attacked the grass something she normally does not do. Once she ate it , she vomited. So it must be true to some extent.

Lucy does the hole digging thing too! When she was about 4 months old I took her outside and she looked like a little earth moving machine. She finally sat down on her little butt so she could get closer! She started moving round and round the hole digging all the way. I laughed until I hurt. She was so excited that when I tried to get her to come to me so we could go inside she'd get halfway to me then run back to "her" hole. She still does it!
