natural balance potato & duck formula (for allergies) hey guys, as i have stated in my previous posts about what to do for tyler who suffers from itching,i went to petco today and browsed the ingriedients on all the dog foods. almost all seem to have corn sources. especially the nutro he was on before. this product i am told works wonders and should cease the bothersome itching. im going to include a link to the site of this food and you can read the testimonials listed there. does anyone else use this food? |
No I don't use the food. But sophie has been itching really bad. The vet gave me some ear drops and that did not work. But know she is loosing her hair she is itching so bad. I have her on California Natural. Which has no corn in it. But has not worked. I not sure what to do now. Good luck |
food for allergies I will look at the potato and duck formula. I know which kinds you're talking about-it's in those weird tube thingies, right? I found an Authority lamb and rice which has no corn that I could see, and I use a Safeway brand beef canned food that has no poultry products. But I'll have to look at the ing. for corn. I hadn't checked. She seems to like the dry food. Don't you feel a little anal reading every single ingredient list at the pet store? I was in Petsmart for 30 minutes. I gave Latte 1/4 tab of prednisone this morning and 2/4 of a child's benedryl this afternoon. She doesn't seem to be scratching or chewing her paws tonight...so far. We'll see. (fingers crossed for luck!) |
I haven't had the itching problem with Buddy, but he does have a really sensitive stomach - the only thing that worked for him is Natures Variety "Raw Instinct" - it's a dry food that he loves and it's just really good ingredients - no potato, wheat or corn, and it has this "probiotic" coating on it that is supposed to be really good. Buddy's been eating it for a few months now, his coat is shiny and he loves it. Here is the link for it: http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1404 Maybe it will help? |
I fed Mojo that for a long time...he loved it, i did find that his skin got a bit dry on it but nothing major, maybe i am just paranoid :P |

Balance is full of human quality meats and veggies. It works well with my Buddy he loves it. Hope it works for your Tyler. I did some research on the brand and it has a good name and is a high quality dog food. They also have the treats. |
Ok I am just reading the lable for Natural ...what is chicken meal? Isn't that a corn mash? |
Merrick wilderness I give this food to my pups. It is great for allergies . Its labled hypoallergenic . Ny pups were on the duck and potato but their allergies started to come back after a few months on the natrual balance. |

Merricks. I don't know anything about it but heard it was a good product. I have also used Royal Canin in the past but the corn in it bothered me for the price. So I switched to Natural Balance. So far so good. Good luck with your choice. |
Where do you buy the natural balance? |
i got mine from petco, im hoping the itching stops but i hear it will take a month for the other food (nutro) to be relieved from his system |
I have been having difficulty getting Sissy to eat her dry food since she was sick. I went to PetSuppliesPlus today and hit the jackpot! The rep from Natural Balance was there and I got samples of all the dry varieties as well as samples of the tube Lamb and Turkey. They make 3 dry formulas specific for allergies with a single source protein and single source carbohydrate. They are the potato & duck, sweet potato & fish (salmon), and vennison & brown rice. The other dry formula (blue bag) has all the protein and carbohydrates. They have the tube rolls of food as well as canned varieties. The canned food is FDA approved for human use as well. Don't think I'll actually try it, but the rep says it tastes good. The rep was very knowledgable. She said they don't have a specific puppy formula because the food is such a good grade they wean puppies directly onto the standard food. I told her what was going on with Sissy not eating her dry food and she thinks it may be because her meds are making things taste bad. I'm going to hold off on trying the dry food till Sissy is done with her meds. I did try a little of the lamb roll and she ate it right up!! Also, if you read the post on grading dog food, you will find that Natural Balance was the highest rated. Hope this helps you all. |
Wow, Jodi. Thanks for all the info. I am diffentely going to check this out. I will also try to find the post on grading dog food. Thanks again. Sherry |
i dont think tyler likes NB much he picks at it all day but he knows that is what he has to eat, its the only thing without corn |
I've had Jazzie on Natural Balance Potato & Duck for about 6 months now. She has had allergies all of her 8 years. It would get so bad that she couldn't sleep and her skin would start to get rashes and blisters! We were going to her dermatologist every 3 months or so as her allergies flared up. Since the switch in food, no trips to the vet, no medicines, no itch! It has been the best food I have gotten for her. And she gobbles it up! She also likes the lamb rolls and the lamb training treats. |
did you notice how long it took for her to stop itching, im hoping it will work for me |

Is your baby suffering now? There is a shampoo at PetCo called Earth Bath. The oatmeal one seemed to help Jazzie, it smells really good too. The vet sent us home with medicated shampoo but I hated it! So I used the medicated shampoo only where Jazzie scratched or licked and used the Earth Bath everywhere else. You should check out http://dogtorj.tripod.com/id5.html. This is the website I went to and convinced me to change her diet. FYI - Jazzie was on Flint River Ranch before the switch. I made the change in the diet for my other Yorkie, Jewel, who had medical issues that included eplilepsy and NB was recommended for seizures. Since the NB was also for allergic dogs, it was easier for me to switch both girls together. I just didn't think it would make such a difference for Jazzie the allergy dog. |
I just started a new Thread about diet and allergies. Take a look here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43979 |
My westie has severe allergies. He has scratched himself bald in places and bitten his paws raw. I had him on the dry duck and potato formula and then the canned. I saw some inprove ment but he was still itchy so I switched to The canned Venison formula and the itching, biting his paws and rubbing his face on the ground stopped after a couple of weeks. He is no longer on meds and I am thrilled because he had been on steroids which I am told can be damaging over long periods of time. |

Thank you Natural Balance!!! |
Bruno had an itching problem when I first got him but after I started feeding him Natural Balance Ultra it's gotten a lot better. He doesn't eat much of it either because it's suppose to be a high quality food. I highly recommend it! |

pet store. It comes in 5lb and 10lb. The price is $9.99 for 5lb and the 10lb is just double. No savings really. |
oily itching boy My little Dudley is a rescue and we love him dearly. We only know he belonged to an elderly women who could no longer care for him or herself. We are having a real time with his coat. He is oily and itchy all the time. We have been to the Vet repeatedly and they say it's a yeast infection, then they say it's a flea allergy then they say it is pollen allergy. I don't think they have a clue. We are using the medicated shampoos the Vet gave us and we are feeding him Royal Canin he did better for a little while but now it is worse then ever. I could take him to the Vet for another shot, but that doesn't solve the problem. Has anyone else had this problem? I've been reading everyone's opinions on foods and maybe the Natural Balance is the way to go. |

Organic for 1yr and Buddy is doing excellant on it. I add extra white meat chicken because it is a little under portein level but rated #5 out of 6. There is no corn, wheat or preservatives. It is the cream colored bag. Try it. More than likely it is wheat that may be causing itching. Good luck. Carol & Buddy |
lots of pets and kids are allergic to corn and wheat read his food labels to see if this is in it |
Nature's Variety "Raw Instinct" This food is absolutely my favorite for my little one - it's the closest thing to a Raw Diet in my opinion, without the hassle - it's a dry kibble that is extremely high quality, and it has a pro-biotic coating (I have to run it through that nutrition "quiz") - and it has NO wheat and NO corn - and no potato either - I found that Buddy just didn't do well with any sort of starches. They actually guarantee that it will improve their coat - I hope you can try it - here is the link: http://www.naturesvariety.com/conten...9907Lyp3355477 Good luck! let us know what works! |
